Yeah, I regret dismissing allegations that the story is just an excuse for child abuse porn. It became very obvious as the anime went along (I can't speak for the manga, never read it) that that's exactly what it is.

I think the first season ends with Mitty's death and yeah her fate seemed unnecessarily cruel. I didn't bothered reading/watching further because the Abyss setting was too inherently bleak for me (iirc you can't ascend after a certain layer without getting your organs scrambled or something so the characters just seemed doomed from the get)

Nanachis main purpose aside from killing bondrewd was to find something strong enough to kill mitty and put her out of her misery, which she found in regs aubade weapon. Anyway without spoiling too much let's day that rikos mom lyza hasn't been found yet ozen subtly implies she's the greatest delver and it's possible she found the bottom which is inexplicable at this point in the manga.
