They do weird shit like giving women a crazy high gate and claim that they break the record for the hill. Then they lower the gate for best the best jumpers because they initially put the gate for the suckers that high so everybody lands bascially in the same range, placements being simply decided by gate and wind points. This is competition for you. The official FIS records mean shit. Yes, some meme event in Iceland or some redbull bullshit also mean shit. But that doesn't make those "official" records any more valid.

Reading about Hirscher's return under the Dutch flag, I kept seeing mentions about him being able to use his own Van Deer brand skis, which he wouldn't have been if he'd returned to the Austrian federation team. Another bit of news mentioned that Van Deer isn't part of the Austrian ski pool. Anyone know why they aren't cleared with the Austrians?

I don't believe it's a war between the ski and hockey federations, it's just that the ski federation is deeply in the red (millions, IIRC) due to lack of income from media contracts and such. And as incredible as it sounds, being the land of Matti Nykänen and Janne Ahonen, ski jumping is a marginal sport nowadays because we have sucked for so long. Niko Kytösaho has gone for private coaching because he was pissed off the federation didn't do anything about our crappy results - no changes to the coaches, for instance. Jenny is our best ski jumper today and I wouldn't be surprised if she went private too. The same with Nordic combined, which despite us having a good chance of getting a top 10 in most races in the men and even better in the women thanks to Minja, but it's such a marginal sport compared to cross-country that freezing the national team sort of makes sense.

Of course it's not all kittens and sunshine with the cross-country types either: multiple national B team members have gone private with Team Electrofit (as have a number of our biathletes) and I would guess that becomes more common too given that our chances are basically Iivo, Gerddu and Krista vs the endless waves of Swedes and Norwegians.
