The Mississippi River is the traditional border, but you obviously have people on both sides now. Still, it fizzles out there. The West Coast is obviously more populated, especially California. But in between the Mississippi and the coast, you first have massive plains that are pretty empty farmland, basically endless cornfields, and then you have the Rocky Mountains and a very large area that is basically a desert.
