Burger bros, what would be considered a successful run in this tournament for you?

I think that culturally you can already say that joint hosting the competition has been a net positive as your public are more interested in the sport than ever before. I live in Bong so I quite used to the associated hysteria of beating a few shitters in the group stages and everyone suddenly pretending we're favourites so let's be realistic.

>beating a well respected european team of the level of belgium, switzerland, croatia, etc?
>making the R16/QF/SF through the easier side of the draw?
>outperforming mexico?
>beating a highly regarded european team of the level of germany, the netherlands, portugal, etc?

desu I just want a discussion without /int/ tier shit flinging
>>
Mexicos results have no bearing on our satisfaction. Irrelevant shithole.

QF minimum and that includes beating a higher ranked Euro nation.
>>
>>155752889
A success would be making it to SF, anything less is retreading old ground. I'd like to beat a high ranked Euro nation, but I'd feel like we didn't accomplish what we needed to if we just beat a good team and then were immediately knocked out before SF.
>>
>>155752889
Expect nothing and everything feels like what you're getting.
Expect everything and nothing feels like what you're getting.
That's what the difference in expectation is for us.
>>
>>155752889
SF, MAYBE quarterfinals if beat France on path, but unlikely. I think there's a script this WC to get USA far but Portugal to win it based on
>Supposed color theory of the logos
>Cristiano meeting up with Trump randomly before the WC
>>
>>155752889
Round of 16 at a bare minimum (equaling our usual result but in a larger format), preferably quarterfinals (at which point we probably face our first big boy team, Spain or Portugal, and go out). Semis would be a miracle run
>>
>>155752889
>beating a highly regarded european team of the level of germany, the netherlands, portugal, etc

for me, it's this. we beat Figo's Portugal in 2002 and it was pretty fucking kino, but it was also groups. if we had beat netherlands in 2022 i would have died happy.
>>
Semis would be a success but they'll likely play Brazil in the quarters so it's not happening.
>>
>>155752889

>>
>>155752889
competitive match in the quarterfinals where we look like a threat to win (and not like 2014 vs. belgium where we nearly stole one despite being completely dominated). Of course, that depends on the matchups in the KO round. I think a loss to a team on our level would be disappointing in the quarters, whereas a competitive loss against a contender in the RO16 wouldn't necessarily be a disappointment.
>>
>>155753008
>they're rigging it for portugal but they're also leaving little clues of their rigging
why do all conspiratards think like this?
>>
>>155752889
The consensus seems to be that we want to make the quarterfinals vs Spain and give them the game of their life
>>
>>155753048
Jews do the same thing
>>
>>155753029
Brazil would probably be like -230 to advance. Weirder things have happened.
>>
>>155753048
coping with their own inabilities, need a big bad who behaves like a movie villain
>>
>>155752889
Quarter finals and beating a well respected like the Netherlands or something semi finals would be nice obviously against like Germany france Norway etc we probably aren’t winning and as a New England bro I wouldn’t want to deal with a team making it far off beating shitters just to get assraped at the end anyway
>>
I'll also add that I think the Turkey game will go one of two ways
>they have nothing to lose and want to redeem some honour and play well and its a tough game
>they are deflated and you stomp them

>>155752968
They're your regional rivals with a fairly dominant overall h2h, I would imagine establishing yourselves as the best NA footballing nation would be quite a big deal?
>>155752985
>>155753008
>>155753025
I think given the expanded format that a QF would be fairly impressive given your best performance was at the 1930 dinosaur era cup. We'll see how the draw works, I think SF would be a stretch but in front of a home crowd and in tournament football, I think SF isn't impossible.
>>
>>155753183
We are starting the 2nd string vs Turkey, so it doesnt really matter either way
>>
>>155753029
I think we theoretically could upset Brazil like if they played like they did against Morocco we have an alright shot it’s not like going against like Argentina france Germany Norway or something where we probably just die
>>
>>155753206
It would be Spain in the quarterfinal, not Brazil, theyre not even in our side of the bracket
>>
>>155752889
>Burger bros, what would be considered a successful run in this tournament for you?
Only when we win and whoever is team captain or coach is (i have no idea what their names are) grabs the mic as he's lifting the trophy and says "we don't give a shit about soccer." Then he drops it and walks off the field.
>>
>>155753183
to be fair, we made the QF in 2002 and got horribly refballed there against Germany. Lost in ET in the RO16 in 2010. Lost comfortably to netherlands in RO16 in 2022, but weren't on the back foot by any means and got really punished for 3 tactical errors and lack of defensive discipline rather than getting played off the field. Given the talent on this team and home field, RO16 out against a team that isn't top tier wouldn't be a success.

None of that stuff matters to me or the people I see on a regular basis day in and day out. I enjoy the spectacle of the event on /sp/. But without 4chan I wouldn't be watching most of the games I'm watching now. I'd probably watch team USA play.

America is a big country. While I don't give a shit about soccer and most of my neighbors don't care, there are pockets of enthusiastic fans across the nation (Seattle for example). Will it be satisfying to win it all? Yes. Will I feel like my team has let me down if they don't make it far enough or beat the right teams? No. I'm just here for the banter...and spectacle.
>>
>>155753183
a QF would be exceeding expectations in the traditional sense, with people going "oh hey that was cool we did better than normal" and then forgetting about it. a SF would be necessary to use the tournament to launch a new wave of fervor in the sport domestically, which would be part of the point of hosting it in the first place.

>>
>>155753218
Spain would beat this team 3-0
>>
>>155752889
The worst possible scenario would be us winning the whole thing. Not only will this board be rendered unusable for at least a few days, but it’ll expedite the process of zoomers and gen alphas becoming insufferable soccer-obsessed faggots (not that there’s anything wrong with this sport as a whole, it’s just that the people who follow soccer in my country tend to be fringe in-group pseudointellectual faggots. That’s just the truth).
>>
>>155753205
Our second string isn’t a big step down, a lot of guys on there that either are or should be getting minutes with the main team already: Reyna, Aaronson, Weah, Wright, etc
>>155753183
We go out in the round of 16 so often that it’s basically expected. casual fan expectations are “yeah they’ll qualify but they won’t do anything in knockouts”, so making quarters would be a huge success just to take away from that narrative.
>>

We have a history of beating Spain

how would spain do against Cabo Verde?
>>
>>155752968
speak for yourself. They're our only rival and every Mexican defeat (especially Dos a Cero) makes my dick hard.

A successful run would include winning the R16, anything after that is a bonus. Outperforming L Tri or sending them home like in Korea/Japan would be kino
>>
>>155753396
oddly I support my CUMbros, but I also desperately need to outperform them.

>>155753183
>fairly dominant overall h2h

USA have dominated Mexico in h2h in the last 15 years
>>
>>155753206
You're overrating Norway. I've watched both their games so far, Haaland is a generational player but defensively they're weak. I would rate you a higher chance of beating them than Brazil.
>>155753027
The Dutch always seem to get better as the tournament progresses, I would pay to see American-Dutch murderball in a knockout.
>>155753275
So in short, you're a tourist?
>>155753232
I remember this game, you were 3-0 up in 35 mins, I still don't know why that Portugal team underperformed so much that year. iirc there might have been some rigging by the Koreans when they beat them too. I can't tell if you rate your team highly or not in terms of talent, you have some great players like Balogun, Mckennie and Reyna, and then you have a load of extremely mid players in your starting xi that kind of leave you vulnerable.

Currently I try not to drink a lot of soda. I still love the taste of Mr.Dew. But when I do get a soda it is usually a Coke.

We can potentially upset one major European power 1 time, but not 3 times in a row.

I am (delusionally) confident we make it to QF, because we have a pretty weak path. I think we'll get exposed by the good teams in said quarter final match but there's a small chance we can sneak a win versus a top team and move on, especially if the reffing stays consistent like it has.

I haven't been paying attention to England at all, how's your path looking?

What would be better, making it to a SF and getting trashed or honourably losing in a QF?
>>
>>155753300
Doctor Pepper is legitimately great, and surprisingly Diet Dr. Pepper is perhaps one of the greatest diet sodas to ever exist. I don't drink a lot of soda, let alone diet, but sometimes I'll go out of my way to get some. It's a weird mishmash of flavors that all come together and end up tasting great.

Mountain dew is for sugar addicts and Voltage is great, baja blast is great, but the original is just kinda eh. It's pepsi's brand that they get to do a lot of "experimentation" with but that just ends up with them making like a billion different flavors and trying weird stuff, which occasionally works but mostly is just "huh guess there's a new flavor of dew out"
>>
>>155753645
You have it all wrong.

It's not about what our current team thinks about it.

That result will absolutely be in the minds of the Spanish players and their media.

>>

not shitting the bed to weaker opponents is the bare minimum and hopefully that means getting through the R16. beating a competitive peer or superior team on the strength of home turf support in QF would be a success for me

if this isn't the event that gets the country on board with soccer idk what will. a whole generation of stars performing at a high level, sexy dudes, tons of goals, civic pride tourism going viral, convenient match times, a funny looking autistic viking guy, a good US team.
this cup has it all.
>>
>>155753689

>>155753778
It absolutely matters. Sports are 75% mental.

It's why England always struggles vs us.
>>
>>155752889
I think making the semis would be a serious win for the sport here. Personally, they have shat the bed so many times and have never beaten a contender. If they could upset someone to make the R8/R4, that would be cool.

Nothing, and that's a good thing. Soccer is fundamentally unamerican. Once every 4 years it's a fine distraction but an America where soccer is actually popular is an America not worth living in.

Personally I’d be satisfied if we get to the Round of 16, but if we win it then it’s a big success for our team. Then it means we’re at least in the top ten and that’s a big tell on the difference in team management since past cups, and a huge boon for attention to the sport in this country.

That said, Americans get a natural buff on home turf so we could go all the way.

>>155754024
History has a habit of repeating itself.

Looking at all of the elite teams, give me the one led by an 18 year old.
>>
>>155752889
It’s not about how good the teams are, it’s about how much they care about soccer. I wouldn’t want to beat Brazil or Argentina to say that we're better, I want to beat them so they feel the shame of losing something that they live and breathe to a place that doesn’t give a rat's ass.
Of course, for that to work we'd have to continue not giving a rat's ass so I’d rather bow out in the quarterfinals so we don’t get any loftier ideas. If it ever reaches a point that there's no real shame of losing to the US, the fun is over.

Bottom line, maintain the image that we're aloof underdogs but take one or two good nations that care deeply down with us and enjoy the seethe it generates.
>>
>>155754024
I never said that! Only that the thought of that game will be in their mind. Anything that causes doubt is effective. We only have that history vs Spain, England, Portugal.

After the first man broke the 4 minute mile mark, tons did it after him.

When the human mind knows something is possible, it's much easier to achieve.

We've already beaten and eliminated the best Spain team of all time. It can be done again.

On quality alone I don't think you're quite a top 10 nation, the home advantage is a huge deal and you should make good use of it. Knockout tournament football is the best way to watch international games but rarely a good metric for measuring who the best teams are. Argentina won in Qatar and I don't think many people would agree that they were the best team in the world at the time.
>>
>>155754132

>>
>>155754364
Because football is something you can arrange in the dingiest, most poverty stricken shithole in the world, I think US success would be different. Kids around the world get inspired to play by watching their national teams succeed so if it were to catch on with the zoomers (or whatever pre-zoomer gen will be called), I think that changes a lot.

>>155752889
I was thinking there was a possibility for them to play July 4th, but not happening. That would have been the ultimate.
As for what happens next, I'd love to see more play between the Northeast US and Western EU. Some specialty tourney where half the games are played here and the rest in England or whatelse.

as of right now if the draw plays out as predicted its BIH rd 32 and egypt/ROK rd 16, so based on that i think QF is the expectation of baseline success. if we get to the SF that would be a very successful and admirable effort since we are outclassed by france argentina and spain and would have a difficult time with england germany morocco etc.

tl;dr the first acceptable loss (tonight doesn't count) for me personally would be the QF

don't we get a third place game for making SF?

Yes

lol we could win the whole thing and 90% of Americans would treat it like winning a gold medal in Olympic soccer. It’s not going to turn NFL fans into Premier League diehards overnight

True. I didn't know the olympics and world cup were different things until like 6 months ago.

yeah so in that case you take the sf even if you lose 50-0 because you've got two shots at some kind of hardware

We already have baseball which is enjoyed in countries with fourth-world level poverty (that we inflicted on them)

If the US makes it to the second round that alone will have more audience than the gold medal game in hockey a few months ago.

The point is for kids to get inspired and want to play

Do you know how many current gold medalists we have right now because they watched an American win gold at prior Olympics?

It would absolutely have a huge effect

Quarterfinals + competitive game vs Spain is the realistic minimum now due to placing 1st in our group and our pathway. Semifinals would be an amazing goal. Getting to a WC final would be a dream come true and winning it at home, well you know.

>USA vs Australia had more USA viewers than the NBA final
The World Cup is hyped into being more of a rare event that non sports fans like women and little kids watch for a month. Women and non sports fans aren’t going to watch an NBA Finals that happens every year

In every country you have women and non sports fans watching their country’s matches but it doesn’t make them stay as your core audience of sports fans after that month is up or mean there was some established surge in popularity in a new generation that will stick

look the only way anybody here is going to care about soccer intimately is if you rip up the PL and bring it here. you need 40-50 billionaires to buy the MLS clubs and just start ripping players across the water to play here, the best players, and then you gotta market the shit out of it, you gotta set millions and millions of dollars on fire paying for commercials, pundits, and influencers to shove it down everybody's throat, it has to be so clear that MLS is not a third tier league, its world class, here are the world class players to prove it, etc

then youd need a true club world cup where MLS doesn't fucking suck

THAT STILL DOESN'T deal with the fact that the entire first half of soccer season overlaps with college and pro football. there's an opening in the second half of soccer season, sorta. so even in ideal circumstances (all of the above done) its still gonna lose to the NFL. those world class players won't be appreciated here.

the best we can hope for is exactly what's happening. we develop elite young talent, send it to Europe to keep developing, and maybe they fuck around into a trophy we cheer for every few years. there's simply no room for anything more than that here.
