Why the fuck did real football never catch on in the US? It's the most accessible sport there is, and I don't just mean cheap. It can be played on almost any surface with almost any ball. What are these lawns good for if not for footy?
>>
It is children game for them. They need macho games when they are older.
>>
USA is unironically rich as fuck and has unlimited anything. When a sports doesn't involved some fuckhuge construction or any other type of barrier of entry they don't play.
>>
>>155837882
It's a kids game. To us the world cup is like the world cup of hopscotch. Fun to watch but not something we'll think about after.
>>
>>155837882
Masons and mormons came up with new sports specifically for americans
>>
Truth is america hates everything thats good and wholdesome. Boomers are basically demonspawn, so them hating a fun wholesome sport is on brand. Nothing to discuss really they are just evil.

>watches adults play football
>"it's a kids game"
>>
It's extremely expensive in America, and thankfully no one plays soccer on these lawns, they would ruin the whole neighbourhood with ball kicking noise the whole day.
>>
Because nations filled with free thinking pioneers conquering vast, undeveloped land, turning the desolate wasteland into advanced first world countries will naturally invent their own sports. Much like trying to explain to a dog how the internet works, neither third worlders nor old worlders will every truly grasp this concept.
>>
More children play soccer than football now it just never really caught on as a spectator sport due in part to competition with the other sports and the instability of our domestic leagues.
>>
>>155838079
Actual free thinkers would've invented football

It's funny how you lot always talk about the tough game as if you were playing it yourself. Dude you're just sitting there on a seat

1) Other sports gained popularity like baseball and then American football. Consider the MLS has only been around since 1996 and us soccer pre 90s was full on amateur tier
2) it just doesnt have the same reputation in other parts of the world where its seen as a game of the people. Underprivileged kids in the usa dont dream of becoming soccer players
>>
>>155837942
>USA is unironically rich as fuck
not even close to true
there are almost 1,000,000 people in the US worth $10M or more.
this skews the worth of the average American massively

I think Americans don't like how the scores are low or often ties. They want to see things that cause a lot of dopamine like touchdowns, dunks, home-runs and KOs (boxing & MMA). They also like wrestling (WWE) for that reason.
The American mind is just that way. Europeans might find that childish and unsophisticated.
>>
>>155837882
Rugby football caught on, and was adapted to become American football.
Continentals unironically seethe more about the use of the word 'football' than any Englishman. Even here one of our best-selling magazines is World Soccer, and our most beloved football TV show is Soccer Saturday. We also have rugby union football, rugby league football, association football and mob football. Oddly, nobody ever attacks the Italians for calling the game 'calcio', though I accept that they are a much easier target than the Americans.
>>
>>155837882
Lawns for playing catch, just like how the driveways are for basketball or hockey. We have our own sports plain & simple, they were already firmly entrenched before English merchants started going around spreading their own. The National League is older than the EFL. We don’t look at empty spaces and resort to the bare minimum in making use of them. We don’t see a parking lot outside the stadium and think it’s just for parking cars, we construct fully functioning party zones out of them every week.

But if you really must know the more complicated story, soccer was on the up and up here in the 1920s. But FIFA was salty that European players were getting enticed over here with better pay and the American governing body was salty that the biggest league was beyond their control. So they conspired against it, which coupled with the Great Depression killed it entirely. That sent the sport underground for decades, plus gave it a reputation as something ripe for foreign subversion (which it still is lol).
>>
Because it's not inherently a better game. Soccer simply succeeded in a crucial time period between the belle epoque and World Wars and now it's too big to fail

It didn't succeed in Australia or China either

Then why don’t they play rugby with the rest of the world?

Looks like the real answer is "because fuck you, that’s why".
>>
>>155837882
there was a pro league here in the 20s, but there was some kind of conflict with international bodies or something. over cup structure or not sending teams to cup matches because they wanted paid season games or something. and that was around the time that sports started to formalize and popularize.

Lots of children play soccer but yes, hardly any adults watch soccer. The NFL, MLB, NBA and college football and basketball are a lot more popular.

What I don't understand, is why does the rest of the world only watch soccer. In the US there's an offseason for every sport and the different league's seasons overlap. You get a chance to watch something else, and then get excited for the next season to start.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like the rest of the world just watches soccer and more soccer and more soccer. I don't get it.

There are no local clubs here like in Europe. The town of Hicksville do not have a 100 year old club that was created from bored coal miners and factory workers. If you want your child to have any chance at even being remotely completely, you’ll have to shell out a few hundred to a few thousand. The pic is just my local soccer league that I never got into because I was broke. The only thing the town of Hicksville has is the high school team, where it’s usually Baseball, football, or basketball (where playing is free due to public funding). Even though it’s only 4 years not enough time.

The main barrier is cost. Our best ngubus and cleetus athletes are the ones who play the sport to escape poverty, and it’s pretty difficult to do that when the sport is a heavy financial burden.

>>155838462
We basically did play rugby but changed it drastically (added downs) 150 years ago. This was before the rugby players invented rugby league, which caught on in Australia. Things were still more insular and malleable back then, and soccer was only really catching on in England at first. So our sport is as old as your sport.

>>
>>155837882
We (USA/Canada/Australia) developed our own football games alongside the original game from Britain (where it was "association" and "rugby" types). By the time "association football" was codified as it was now, we had our own version of football based on rugby football. "Soccer" is just British talk for "association". Rugby lost the "football" part and just became "rugby" and "football" because synonymous with "association" football.
The reason it's not popular is because it's a later re-import instead of a native sport. Working class people here already play baseball, basketball, or gridiron football. More wealthy types play lacrosse, ice hockey, or tennis. Soccer is just that thing suburbanite moms have their kids play on a local kids team to keep them occupied over summer, and most fans of the actual pro teams tend to be either foreigners or locals who are pretending to be worldly and European. Additionally, anyone used to our sports looks at guys lightly brush against each other then flop on the grass like sissies EVERY TWO MINUTES and thinks "God, what a faggot" and watches a real sport.

God, why are Indians such obnoxious, vile, idiots. Canada has these weird cool Whites you can tell when they post but everyone else is so obviously brown it is so odious.

Baseball is almost a world sport now, Asia loves it, Korea league is doing well, Japan its a religion there. Baseball is booming in popularity here ever since they reformed the game to make it faster with more action. Shohei Otani has made the game unreal and everyone is feeding off the energy.

I promise you I gave Cricket a real genuine chance and looked at rulebook and its just not there dude. If it wasn't for India, to be frank UK would have switched to baseball a long time ago.

I am basically just talking to myself after I insulted you, probably you skipped my post so what the hell

I don't like Cricket because:
1)The batter is way too overpowered, there are no foul balls, you just need contact to not be a 'Wicket' you can just aim your ball into gaps to get 4 points. If they run they can stop running whenever they want and not be thrown out. There are almost no plays at the plate AND even your bat can count as making it on base what the fuck its so boring. A guy on a heater can very well bat for 40 minutes straight and get 100-200 points.

2) Fielders are almost inconsequential, its almost like being a ball janitor. Of course when they matter its cool, they catch a ball and get a wicket.

3) When there is a wicket the wait for the batter to leave the pitch is so boring although to be fair American sports have these long breaks too

I have no other points to make sorry but these factors make me hate Cricket a lot more.

history time

we tried actually, way back in the late 1920s but it got too popular too quickly, this is called the american soccer wars. we were actually so successful for a brief period that yuros were getting mad that we kept trying to poach their best players and pay them what was considered exorbitant amounts of money. like the saudi league of its time, but actually working. there was so much potential power to take that we had multiple competing leagues, who kept trying to throw more money at overseas players in their arms race for supremacy with each other. eventually FIFA stepped in and banned the leagues, so we banished the whole ass sport into the shadow realm for decades because there's no point playing it if we can't beat the rest of the world at it. then we pivoted into real football instead of soccer and have never regretted it.

I think a couple of things.

1. Football is a full contact sport, soccer isn't. I do think there needs to be a balance between the two like a Flag football or pushing allowed in Soccer *some WC games have had good refs which allow more contact*. All the World Cup games I've seen benefit speedy players. But what I like about Football is that slow, fat, skinny, fast, all players contribute.

2. Surprisingly we used to be a baseball country, Football took off in the 1970s due to money and promotion. Right now there is too much money in Football from High School, College and beyond. I always recommend foreigners if they ever want to watch a Football game, check out college Football. It's much less a numbers game, less boring min/max stat analysis and more the true spirit of Football. Same with college level Basketball.

3. Sports in America is pure entertainment, like watching a movie. I know everyone hates hydration breaks, but it does give people a chance to stretch, piss, eat, drink etc.

4. NFL teams in America represent each State/Region, like clubs in Europe or even NTs in Europe. e.g. Germany is the size of Texas. You would need state/region clubs like that in Soccer.

5. Shot clock, every American sport has one, even baseball with pitching now. There needs to be something FORCING movement/risk in the game.

6. Coin flip, penalty kicks are boring. Do something like overtime in Football or even Foul shots in Basketball, something ability based.

I had a student (14) that was scouted by LA Galaxy. He’s Hispanic, lives in a trailer park, and was the first in his family born in the US. To attend the camp, which he was invited to, he was expected to:
>pay $1500 to enroll in the camp, $700 for uniform and equipment, $900 for coaches
>attend practice in Carson, a 1.5 hour drive, daily, from 16:00 - 20:00, including weekends
>sign a contract that enrolls him in their certificated charter school and maintain a 2.9 GPA if he is selected
>cannot sign/train for another team for a set period of time, regardless of whether admitted or not
this was on top of the $12000 his family had already paid for him to play at the highest competitive club league that includes registration, coaching, uniform, referee, and traveling fees.

the anon with the historical story is correct, there was the potential of it taking place way back in the early 1900s, but NFL and MLB owners made sure it disappeared and guarantee their new sports were the main attraction by paying the right people. Combine that with the current pay-to-play model, it’s hard for families to justify the cost when their kids already play the more popular travel ball sports.

Why do you even give a fuck? Why don't you watch US sports and quit being an asshole?
>>
>>155842652
Also the rise of television. For all the sport's reputation as an excuse to shove out commercials, it had already evolved into such a perfect organism for the small screen and to rake in revenue before TV even started reaching households or anyone knowing better.

>Why don't you watch US sports

>baseball
Looks kinda dull. Never really played it real life either. There's only so much players can do.
>basketball
Looks alright. Never gets as impressive, nor as clumsy as football. Doesn't have the "goal variety" of football (tap-ins, headers, bicycle kicks, own-goals, tiki-taka goals, panenkas, solo dribbles, clutch goals, turbo shots, mega-distance shots when the keeper is out of position, etc.)
>handegg
Can't be bothered to learn the rules and find a team to support.
>>
Why do thirdoid shitskins and eurobrowns ITT get mad about this? Soccer is shit sport for poor, economically underdeveloped shitholes where people have cholera and no ACs. Simple as. No need for you foreigners to cope about it so much.
>>
Real question is why Europeans only watch soccer? America has 4 sports leagues that bring in billions of dollars per year and you guys can't even bother to follow a 2nd sport.
>>
>>155838274
you going to argue the US economy is the largest in the world by a significant margin?
>>
>>155837882
My guess is it has something to do with the US wanting to have its own identity completely independent of British/Euro identity. The same logic applies to their use of meme measurements. It makes sense that if you want to break ties with the European empires and become your own empire that you would create your own units of measurement, your own sports, your own culture. What's weird is why didn't they change their language but that's easier said than done.
>>
>>155843911
>you guys can't even bother to follow a 2nd sport.
We're too lazy to watch TV as much as Americans do
>>
>>155843911
>why do europeans not consooom as much as us?
>>

It's not. GDP is fake and gay. China is bigger in purchasing power.

Why do other countries even want more Americans involved in this sport? Though i do think it would be cool if it got popular here but this will be 1994 all over again. The numbers look good and fifa gets excited thinking Americans will fall in love with soccer this time but it will probably only get slightly bump in popularity for a bit than go back down. Most Americans don’t care unfortunately not even trying to troll. Stop thinking 4chan or reddit is real life
>>
>>155841768
Forcing risk is a good thing to have, football is kinda boring now because it's too tactical and risk averse. Not familiar with the other sports but I like that mindset.
>>
>>155844108
I think it'll grow in popularity due to the gigantic brain damage problem american football has emerging. My kids are playing football.
>>
>>155844108
1994 was pre-CTE and pre the realization that baseball is on a terminal downward spiral and pre football become gangster among black people in uk and especially France where they have completely taken over. It was also pre-youtube where all these things are visible and not obscured, never to be seen or talked about again. As much I hate the faggot, IShowSpeed probably does a lot to get blacks interested in the way they might basketball.
>>
>>155844108

Do they?
>>
>>155844287
I only ever see Europeans talk about that guy. He almost feels like a personality designed to push foreigners' buttons the same way this Freddy character is glazing Americans right now.
>>
>>155844363
Surprisingly yes. This question gets asked by a non American flag every other day and it’s not just on 4chan either. I figured they would want Americans as far away from this sport
>>
>>155844363
As this thread (and infinitely many others before it) have shown, they permanently seethe and cry about American disinterest in divegrass. It's as if us not caring about soccer is something that they take as an offensive statement about both the sport and themselves by extension.
>>

People have been saying baseball is dying since the 19th century, it’s not going anywhere

>not enough violence
Even in baseball a pitcher can beanball the batter and bench clearing brawls happen. The very real possibility of getting your ass kicked is very important to keeping men in line.
>drawing fouls is more important than playing the ball
The NBgAy is on a decline because of this. We don't want to see tattle-tells being teacher's pet. It's corollary to the not enough violence.

South Americans are poor and don't like watching sports they couldn't realistically practice, Europeans are autistic and suffer from severe cognitive rigidity. Asians do, in fact, watch other sports and they're often more popular than soccer, like baseball in Japan, the greatest country on Earth.

>>155845426
Not really

There are the some tweakers in cities but it's nowhere near as bad as in the US
Also young people will smoke weed and sometimes do coke but it's far less prevalent

Taking drugs (even legal ones) is extremely normalized in the US, that's the root of your problem

American football had already taken root before soccer in the US. College football goes back to the 1800s. Baseball also had roots dating back to the 1800s, as an offshoot of cricket.

There are limited opportunities for men in soccer in the US. Due to Title IX many colleges don't offer scholarships for men's soccer, only women's soccer. Good male athletes don't see soccer as an opportunity. I think they are trying to go to the European model of academies/clubs but that may take a long time.

the pay barrier. plenty of people are LMC and, especially during recessions, don't have the luxury of spending extra income to enroll their kid into a sport club. no pay no game. the kids are forced to make do on their own by practicing by themselves, or if they're lucky, with neighbors. lack of standard game experience already puts you behind when you get to the point of playing for a high school team. if you aren't a foreigner or didn't grow up with rich parents who paid for your club, it's over for you.

I never understood the explanation that soccer is for kids when basketball is literally a street game for kids.

to play soccer you need the goal frame and you need grass (mostly) you need a team.
basketball you literally only need a hoop and that's it. you can play on concrete, on a gym. on the road, you just need a hoop.

soccer also involves running and a little bit of talent to kick property. basketball you just throw. just throw. no talent.

why is basketball not seen as a kids game or why is it worshipped so much in USA?
>>
>>155846233
>>155846380
You need to stop coping and seething this desperately just because you're too inept or figure out basic irrigation. No wonder you Spanish retards die by the thousands in very mild "heat waves" kek. Again, it's just grass, no need for your mental breakdowns.
