We must discuss the awesome power of medieval fantasy's most iconic monster.

ha! I'd recognize that dragon from anywhere OP.
Still one of the biggest mysteries of the first game, just what the fuck is that dragon doing there? There's some speculation because of info in Termina that there might have been Draconic (Dragonic is used as the term verbatim) Blights that would have some relation to Lizardman society since Blights are just New God Lizardmen. So maybe Dragons are also a kind of New God Lizardman? Also the 'Chromatic Blights' might be a reference to D&D Chromatic Dragons. Or something in the Finnish Epic Kalevala.

Anyway, I like the idea of Dragons being like a primordial foe of Giants or Gods in ancient history of settings. I just really go for the gigantomacy/titanomachy motif since. It's one of those inheritances from the Greeks we might not even realize is one, but just go to a museum with Classical art and sculpture and you'll see it.
>>
>>92477211
I cast Cloudkill.
>>
I created a unique dragon for my homebrew that is half-red half-blue. Not purple, mind you, actually heterochromatic across the scales, the two never mixing. She's got a polymorph ability and uses it to infiltrate the five kingdoms of the region she lairs in to manipulate them for her own ends. Also PROBABLY hated by Tiamat.
>>
>>92479505
>Or something in the Finnish Epic Kalevala.
Not as far as I know, though there's surprisingly many times the word "kirjava", which could be translated as chromatic (it literally means multicolored or brightly-colored) is used in association with the underworld. Including one mention of a multicolored snake of the underworld in one spell.
The salmon snake in the game is an obvious Finnish pun, though, since that's the literal translation of the Finnish word for dragon (though etymologically it seems the current spelling is actually a corruption of an older one, and the original meaning was likely something along the lines of "mountain snake" in old Finnish).
>>
>>92479542
>Also PROBABLY hated by Tiamat
What’s her problem with her, does the hybrid worship another god or something?
>>
>>92485272
Tiamat is a dragon racist of course. Interracial dragon breeding ticks her off.

I like it when dragons have a government and a parliament. And they get their own bureaucrat dragons, their glowie dragons, and their jannie dragons. They have to do dragon accounting and report their breeding plans to dragon resources. Other nations are lulled into believing they're just another nation, though of dragons, doing dragon diplomacy and dragon trade. You can keep that going for quite a while, before getting to dragon war.
>>
>>92485656
I know there are multiple people who have convergently come to the same ideas. It’s only a matter of time before you can use ai to make this dragonocracy worldbuilding concept written down in excruciating visual detail at minute cost.

There should be an underclass of young dragons bred in clutches by claws and disowned/sent as tribute to be used as as soldiers & slaves for the dragon-state. Make sure they’re castrated & dewinged, declawed, de-breath attack organ’d if it’s possible. Why nobody touches this concept in dragon kingdoms when they show up is a missed opertuinity.

What about monsters that are related to dragons but not considered “true” dragons, like this wyvern, what are your opinions on them? Me, I like to see them as the dragon version of chimpanzees, the closest living non-sapient relatives of true dragons, with some dragons domesticating them, or at least using them to draw away human attention.
>>
Dinosaurs but you call them dragons. Thoughts?

>Tiamat is a dragon racist
My Elven paladin is built for knocking her up
>>
>>92486734
That's something I like. It can vary though. The last campaign I ran that was focused on 'dragons' each dragon was a different draconic or serpentine monster. One was a classic Red, another a Wyvern, one a Hydra etc.

But most of the time I run other draconics as smart beasts (Wyverns) or servants (Dragonborne). So bog standard.
>>
>>92479542
If her scales don’t mix, what about her breath weapon, is it a red dragon’s fire, a blue’s lightning, a mix, or something unique, like plasma or a magic EMP?
>>
>>92472319
I prefer my dragons to be expressions of pure elemental fury, remnants from a time primordial when the world was yet untamed and still forming, the power of those forces made flesh and showing in their breath attacks that unleash a portion of the strength of the raw elemental power within, forms, and behaviors, like this Earth dragon having scales effectively made of stone and a breath weapon that shoots out blasts of sand. So, how elemental are your dragons?

Dragons are the kings of beasts. Essentially they are cat bat lizards that breathe fire (or whatever) and can grow to be really big. They do not speak, do not cast spells, are evil, sleep for long periods of time, lay eggs in remote places that can take a very long time to hatch, and prefer to lair in remote wild places or ruins (which they may have caused to be ruins). Dragons have four legs and two wings. They can grow to be huge sized, but at least one dragon from legend was gargantuan.
>>
>>92479994
Word might also come from "death snake", louhikäärme -> lohikäärme, and it's suspected Louhi from Kalevala is death goddess that has been turned into human.
>>
>>92487090
Well, dinosaur bones reportedly inspired dragon legends, so that can actually work.

Why do your dragons hoard material wealth like gold or silver? Only my male dragons hoard wealth, and they do it as an honest-signal of their fitness, like a peacock or proboscis monkey. Female Dragons are more likely to get weird cravings for something like virgin sacrifices in order to obtain mystic nutrients to lay her eggs.
>>
>>92506779
they dont
the ones that lair in ruins might be considered to be "guarding" the ruins and any treasure inside, but thats incidental
>>
>>92506779
To catch mortals to eat. Gold doesn't rust so sitting on a pile of shiny baubles mortals love is a ingenious way to keep your tummy full. Also the big snakes like shiny baubles themselves.
>>
>>92508994
Wouldn’t the dragon still need to hunt though? There can’t be that many people ready to face a dragon, golden reward or no.
>>
>>92472319
What about discussing Dragonborn or other humanoid races with draconic features like Dracthyr in WoW, how do you feel about those?
>>
>>
>>92475689
Unironically an awesome idea. I love spiders and the idea of a trapdoor dragon is fucking cool. Yoink!
>>
>>

>>
What are your thoughts on the idea of man-made dragons?
>>
>>92512487
Snakes can digest prey for weeks and trust your senses no sane person goes to fight a dragon alone. Do they go hunting? Of course you can't sit in your cave all day.
>>
>>92472319
What are good mythical origins for Dragons?

One I like is the idea that Gods created Dragons as weapons to use against their enemies, though they proved to be too unruly.
>>
>>92524690
I like the idea of them being gatekeepers/guardians made by the gods to keep mortals away from certain things.
>>
>>92524690
Regular animals created by God and abused by fallen angels larping as pagan gods with little g's.
>>

>>
>>92514964

>>
>>92514964
>>92527400
I think dragonborn are in bad taste
I have "saurians" in my setting as a playable race, basically lizardfolk-lite, but they're asshole lizardmen with claws and a bite, not noble upstanding humans with scales and fire breath
>>
>>92514964
I think they make the most sense as a form of transhumanism and not as a naturally occurring race until long after the fact. The best path for them in my opinion would be a case like humans trying to get a leg-up on/fight fire with fire against dragons and thus mimicking their form to kill them better or replace them.
>>
>>92514964
I think Dragonborns are fine, I have them originating from a mutation in Dragons that made them that way. Dragons being highly mutatable in my setting which is why there's a billion different Dragon-types running around
Since Dragons are Apex-Predators that everyone either fears or admires and starts cults around I figure Dragonborns are like the humanoid equivalent of that

Kobolds are cool, I dig the humanoid Dragons in general

I have no art, I meant when I picture it in my head, sorry.

As for her parents, honestly I always pictured her being a direct spawn of Tiamat that managed to slip away before she could be devoured.

>>92503997
So they can. Though I picture her as being a bit less clean-cut in her looks, more points and whatnot.
>>
>>92472319
In the Forgotten Realms, every single race of Dragon should get an alignment pass to kill Elves because of the Dragon Rage spell they cast. Consequently, all dragons should try to learn Autohypnosis 50 because the epic skill check let's you make a check of any mental effect even if it wouldn't otherwise allow one. Thus potentially bypassing their rage. Make it a Gem Dragon plot because they're psionic and it's a psionic skill.

only the baddest badasses should be riding big dragons
maybe young dragons can be tamed by badasses in small numbers
but in general, other aerial mounts should be much more common
in my setting its gryphons and wyverns; pegasi only exist as special paladin mounts and hippogriffs dont exit
>>
>>92539954

Dragons naturally culminate into supreme hedonists and powerfully fragile narcissists. Loathing and thrashing over each other to the top of the natural order only to become bloated with wine, bathed in gold and hoarding value most valuable to those they despise. Degenerating on drugs, pleasure and rituals until the next dragon takes their place.
Truly abominable creatures.
