At least at a glance, it seems fine so far, if a bit messy. I can chalk some of that up to translation though.
There's the assumption of rolling for ability scores, though it's on top of a set of base stats which you can more freely pick, and the resulting ranges of modifiers are fairly lenient. Seems solid, especially since scores also seem to also improve at random.
The distinction of major/minor classes is rather interesting, where a degree of mixing classes is blatantly encouraged, where some classes offer pure utility.

Skill checks are 2d6 and assume you add your relevant class level, so that's pretty good for letting people specialize. Double 6s are auto-success and double 1s are auto failure, so not a major chance, but still a chance.
Penalties seem purely numerical, which could get fiddly with situational modifiers. They are stated as guidelines, though I'm not especially keen on that. Penalties also vary from -1 to -4, except most of the examples are just -2 or -4.
And some of those seem way worse than others. Like it's a -4 if you can't use either of your arms, but it's also a -4 for just fighting underwater (unless you're an elf, and then there's no penalty at all)
They are ultimately guidelines, so there's room to adjust to taste there, but it's something I would certainly adjust if I was running it.

The list of skill checks with time requirements, examples, and relevant classes is rather nice and codified. Maybe a bit strict in some ways, but since you just need a level in a relevant class rather than a specific skill, that makes it more broad.

The Power Table as a way to determine damage feels rather strange, though I think I'm just missing where Power of an attack is determined.
Spellcasting uses MP, unsurprisingly for something that's giving major JRPG vibes. The spell lists themselves seem quite short, though that's not exactly a bad thing.

Overall it seems solid enough. Perhaps a bit convoluted for such simple options.

The implication I got was that the skills were moreso just categorizations of when certain checks would apply.
Since no matter what you end up rolling your Scout/Ranger class level alongside an ability modifier, they don't quite function as individual skills. The implication I got was simply that it was very worthwhile for characters to invest at least slightly into Scout/Ranger, since without at least one level you don't add your modifier either. And then there would be the option beyond that to invest more Scout/Ranger levels for a specialist.

The game seems to be fully built around multiclassing as a default.

NTA. I did find a wikidot for the system, which is a plus since it means a lot of the rules are online in one place.
It does notably have a page for homebrew, although it really comes across more like houserules, like letting people add half their ability mod if they don't have the right class for a check, or making it so some Geomancer healing ability can't be used outside of combat since it would otherwise allow infinite healing.

I would expect that with such specific numbers in a lot of places, it would be hard to make something that fills in the gaps. Though it does look like supplements basically created entire brand-new subsystems for things like Bards and Geomancers, so I doubt it's outright impossible to homebrew. Merely something that would require more care, caution, and understanding of the system than people might be used to.

The system does seem like it already covers a lot of ground though.
Just for a though experiment a basic one might be for how easy it would be to either make a pyromancer within the existing rules, or otherwise homebrew a pyromancer by changing existing spells to be fire-based.

It's a tiny niche of a market, and also extremely fragile, to the point where even the biggest game can fade away within a few years because the community is so tiny and spread out.

The answer is that WotC didn't do any real marketing (and they still largely don't), and the tie-in video game that was planned for 4e got scrapped. Even 3rd edtion only saw any popularity in Japan largely thanks to Never Winter Nights, and this was also the case in many non-US countries.

Basically, CoC filled in the vaccum that 4e created, and also did well before 5e managed to gain any traction, thanks again to next-to-no serious marketting from WotC. But, with the release of BG3, suddenly Japan is aware of the new edition, and it's catapulted to the top. It's a question of how long it will stay there though, but my guess is that it won't last particularly long, because the much smaller Japanese TTRPG market is incredibly volatile thanks to its size.

And to demonstrate what I mean here, something as innocuous as changing a Sorcerer's Energy Bolt to Fire Bolt led me to discover how many monsters have elemental weaknesses, the fact that those elemental weaknesses would often mean basic spells deal 30%-50% extra damage, and the fact that the game already has a Fire Bolt spell which is the same damage as Energy Bolt, but one level higher on a different class (specifically the Fairy Tamer which seems far more elemental-focused and more ideal for somebody making a fire mage).

I could very easily see somebody new to the system falling into the same pitfall I did. Seeing that a Sorcerer gets a Fireball spell, and figuring it wouldn't change much if the Sorcerer's other damage spells were also Fire.
I'm sure it'd be possible to do homebrew mechanics, but I can see even at a glance how it might require more care if even something as basic as this could cause problems.

Energy Bolt is a Rank 1 spell. Fire Bolt is Rank 2. Ice Bolt is Rank 3. Windcutter is also Rank 3. Pebble Shot is Rank 4.
All of these spells have very similar costs and damage.
Do you think a spell being capable of lighting fires is less of a game changer than throwing a rock? Because the system thinks that the rock is more valuable.

Right. Somebody looking at the system might see that same sort of thing, dismiss it off-hand, and go about making changes to the ranks of different elements of spells due to their own bias about what they see as useful.
But the fact that vulnerabilities do make up such a sizable portion of damage would indicate that such changes being made haphazardly could easily fuck things up.

It might very well be the case where Pebble Shot really is a ridiculously undertuned spell, but I could see people making the assumption for a lot of spells and changing them around thinking it's not a big deal. That's the point I was trying to make.

The way WotC used to do things is for translations, they'd let companies in the country handle translation and publishing; WotC basically just sold them a license, and they didn't even QC the translations (probably because they couldn't). But, in 2021, WotC switched its policy and took back those licenses, and then pumped out some new translations into a few markets, including Italy and Japan. A lot of people in Japan thought this was the first time the books were being translated into Japanese, even though there had technically been a Japanese translation for years.

Add the D&D movie, BG3, the Critical Roll Animation, and vtubers, and to top it all off, CoC having spent the last few years fading pretty hard as a fad, and 5e was ripe for a "second" attempt, and it quickly dominated the TTRPG scene there.

Those tools have a nasty tendency to struggle with concepts like line breaks and multiple columns. If you're machine translating from image like that, the workflow you want is an OCR program (Google Docs works really quite well) to transcribe the text, a proofreading pass to make sure it hasn't had any attacks of retardation, and then feed it into your translator of choice using proper paragraphs. That also allows you to set up the whole book's JP text so you can use find-replace on proper nouns and defined game terms.

A lot of those situations sound like cases where having fire magic would be more of a hinderance than a help. You don't want to accidentally burn down the library or village you're in when you miss an attack, or get the entire party killed because you hit an underground gas pocket.

And like he said, if you need to start a fire, it's pretty easy to just strike up a torch. And if it's that tactically advantageous to start a fire in the midst of battle, then spending your entire turn lighting and throwing a torch is gonna be just as effective.

Judging from yellow submarine sales and people I know who live in japan, objectively wrong and a gross misrepresentation of how ttrpgs are played in japan.
They are very oneshot focused, campaign play is relatively rare and often times they play a game one session, then play something else. They may come back to the game, but its what it is.
Sword World and CoC are consistently in the top 5 of yellow submarines sales charts, year after year. Often its actually the sword world supplements that released that year topping the charts, which is pretty indicative of how mass-adopted the game actually is.
5e is sometimes in the top 10, but thats about it.

The skill system, which a lot of people seem to hold up as super rigid and restrictive is also a lot less strict then people make it out to be. It is very easy to make up skill checks on the fly, letting you as the GM or a player use any class and ability score mod. Together if you so choose, because all a skill check is is just class level + ability score mod. + 2d6.
I tend to stick to the paradigm of scout ranger sage being the skill monkeys, but there are situations where I as a gm feel like anyone should be able to make a check so I call for adventurer level instead, or when a player wants to mess around with a magitech device, I call artificer + int, and so on.
Its just that notepad said "its too perfect" and now people keep repeating that sentiment. From years of experience of playing the thing, I tell you its a lot more robust and homebrew friendly than you would first expect.
Races, Items, classes, spells, monsters... You can homebrew in what you feel is necessary. I also use a couple of house rules, without the whole game breaking down, so yeah.

Why do we care about populations of something again? I'm a translator of several jtrpg, the people who know about me or my works are probably less than the finger in my hand (that might decrease since my day job is in the field lol)

It's just that small markets are volatile, ie. games change "rankings" constantly with the sales of relatively few books. But, there's some guys going around trying to spread this lie (a few youtubers in particular) about "CoC IS HUGE IN JAPAN" as a point of advertisement, when in reality no TTRPG was big in Japan, and even CoC's player numbers have dropped dramatically in recent years.

I'm not knocking what you do, and do wish TTRPGs were bigger in Japan, in no small part because the game design sensibilities have really diverged from any Western Games and there's lot of interesting ideas developing there. What particularly interests me is how the Japanese are a lot less resistant to taking video game RPG concepts and closing the circle by bringing them back into TTRPGs.

The grand joke is no TTRPG sells well. Not even just in Japan, but in general. Even hitting a few thousand copies is essentially a big success.

Even D&D, best selling TTRPG of all time can't survive on book sales alone. Hell, it makes the vast majority of its money via liscenses, for things like merchandise and video games. A lot of people have this expectation that TTRPGs are a huge business, but the people who play the games the most don't actually make all that many purchases over the lifespan of a game.

Even if AD&D hit Japan right at the ideal moment, right in the middle of their enconomic boom and somehow managed to corner the entire TTRPG market there, it would have been a drop in a very small bucket.

You don't get into selling TTRPGs because you love money.

A thought: How does Pebble Shot differ results-wise from just beaning somebody with a rock from a sling? Seems to me that they're conceptually identical, just one's magic and the other isn't. If they are identical or very similar then putting it at rank 4 is pretty rude.

Pebble Shot is Power 10 while a Sling is Power 12. Though I will say that at a glance, it seems like the main upside of a Sling over a Shortbow is that getting silver ammo for it is cheaper.
I expect Pebble Shot might have some upsides for being magical, but I'd also expect that any upsides it would have would also apply to all the other spells with Power 12 that I saw.

I will say that the Fairy Tamer class that actually gets these spells does seem like it has systems in place where you're not expected to be freely accessing all of them at once. So it's possible that Pebble Shot is purposefully undertuned in order to make Earth slightly less good due to one of its other spells being better, or something like that.
Like just for the sake of further comparison, the level 1 Earth spell is Snare to knock someone prone, while the level 1 Fire spell is Tinder, and ignites things with a touch. It could very well be the case where Fire gets the lowest rank damage spell on purpose.

That's the thing I've been trying to illustrate/puzzle out, that there might be a reason here for why things are listed how they are. And by extension, why Sword World might be a deceptively challenging game to try and homebrew, if it really is all this meticulously laid out.

I think TTRPG's found a bit of success when Critical Roll hit the limelight. It made it more of a fad and approachable, but it also changed how the masses approached the hobby. For a while there Hasbro treated it like a flagship IP, but its popularity is already dwindling again down to hobbyists.

Japanese RPGs in general are more about railroading. The DM has a story, the players follow it more, and don't really make choices. RP is less prominent, and rolling dice to tell you stuff is far better. A lot of by the rules games as well.

As for main "content" differences:
- Different continents. Main continent is Alframe on 2.5, Terastier on 2.0, and Keldion/Razeldawn as the Empty "free use" continents for their respective version.
- Lots for races on 2.0 are missing from 2.5, but you can still use them on 2.5 games (either set on the 2.0 continents or immigrants coming to the 2.5 continents). There is even a scenario made for that travel, "Voyage to the alframe continent".
- Some classes are missing between versions and may not come back. One changed a lot (Warlock) because how daemons worked on 2.0 is different to 2.5 (On 2.5 if you let your daemon pet free for too long it literally opens a portal to hell and makes a dungeon on the other side).
- You actually have adventurer ranks on 2.5 (you buy with reputation points), which is up to the GM for it to actually matter (tho there are some examples on how it would work)
- There is no level 16+ supplement on 2.5 yet, only on 2.0 (tho you can still use it, it would be nice to have one for 2.5)

I think that's most changes that comes to mind rn. But in general, you can use whatever is available on 2.0 for 2.5 games with almost no issue (unless it has custom rules, on which case use those instead)

Probably because its the newest version, and the one that is still getting supplements to this day. 2.0 had 10 years of content before 2.5 released, so there may be atleast 4 more years of 2.5 content before 3.0 is released (if there is even a 3.0), which may include those missing races and classes.

Not that you can't play with 2.0, but i think it may be a bit harder to move 2.5 content to 2.0, than it is from 2.0 to 2.5 (tho if you invert the changes on the granzale guide to 2.5 classes and races then i think you can technically do that). Also the community is also translating the original Sword World RPG if you want to try that instead.

From what i have played and read, i think more than removing, they either just simplified or made some changes to the gameplay for ease of use. An example is how on 2.0 you had 2 combat feats that were made to avoid stray shots (one for ranged and one for magic) while on 2.5 they combined it on the [Targeting] feat, or how they added the combat preparation "round" to all battles so people can prepare a bit before combat. Basically changes so people have it an easier time while playing

While the missing content is mostly part of supplements that doesnt have a similar book released on the other version yet (like there is still not a barbarous book yet on 2.5, but apparently one will release in a few months). So that's why 2.5 still has the options to use 2.0 content until they have a proper book about it.

Tho that doesnt mean 2.5 doesn't add some content exclusive to that version. Classes like the Battle Dancer (High mobility Glass Cannon) and the Geomancer (RNG buffs); Races like Meria(plants), Lykants(Werewolfs but for different animals), Tiens(Literally made to beat Daemons), Abyssborn(Born in a hell dungeon), Alv(Mana vampires) and Spriggans(Halfling Turn Giant), and these not counting the rare races, which are basically subspecies with different stats and buffs than the regular version (like how on this game Elfs are mostly from fishermen villages near the sea while Mist Elfs are the tree-loving race).

The whole Abyss (Hell) stuff going on in the continent (literally you can enter your own personal hell with friends and gain loot from it), especially the north as there is an open portal covering the north pole and the only thing stopping it from getting bigger is a giant wall around it...oh and trains, 2.5 added magic trains (and a train-loving god).

If your Runefolk is a gunner (as in with an actual gun) then remind them to have both Marksman and Artificer classes, as there is no Gunpowder on the setting and bullets use Magitech spells to be powered up and Marksman is used for the accuracy. Bad news, you require more resources with both bullets and MP. Good news, is that bullets can't be resisted, and the enemy takes magic damage (Defense doesnt work on bullets)...and you can technically turn your bullets into healing bullets so you can point blank heal your companions.

Campaign books can even be played solo, and most campaign and scenarios have different settings on each encounter depending on party size (it will either add more enemies to the encounter or increase the boss stats), so not really an issue if you play with 3 players.

It's fun, and honestly not hard to run. It's player facing, you can make companion NPCs that practically run themselves if you have a small party, the setting is kino and there's lots of content.

That said, the campaign and adventure modules suck ass. They play more like board games than RPGs, reward grinding by replaying missions like some JRPG, there's little to no story on them (introducing a named NPC just to have it be completely irrelevant to the plot), and I swear most of them weren't playtested and just add extra rules for complexity's sake; an example, there's a campaign where you fight demons inside a rift that replicates the night that an ancient civilization fell. You eventually find the illusion of a princess who died that night being attacked by a spider scorpion thingie, her soldiers trying to protect her. Not only is the encounter quite unfair for third level characters, it's also the THIRD non optional encounter of the campaign and it even has extra rules about how many soldiers the mofo kills each round and will eat the arm of the princess if all soldiers die. Guess what? HAVING HER ARM NOT EATEN DOES NOTHING. No extra rewards, no plot impact, nothing. I remind you, this is an illusion, something that already happened, and changing the events of that night does jack shit for the plot or the characters. You only make a ghost girl that accompanies the party during the adventure feel less shit about it. By the way the girl only speaks TWICE during the entire fucking campaign.

Well, removed isn't exactly right, since 2.5 is backwards compatible with 2.0 Material, so you can still use all of it. They just didn't reprint/rework everything quite yet. I think the new content 2.5 provides makes more than up for whats "missing", imo.
The only thing I really miss is playable barbarous races. I think some of them could use a rework/rebalance, and a 2.5 barbarous supplement could open the door for new barbarous not seen in 2.0.

Ive played sword world extensively so I can offer some suggestions.
1. Have a boss monster that has no more then 2 higher accuracy/evasion (at lower level this is probably just 2 levels higher) then your warrior classes. The reason for this is that due to the probability curve of a 2d6 and that the passive side wins draws, if the boss has 3 or higher then your warriors are likely never going to hit it (8.66% chance). Later on this changes cause theirs lots of ways to increase accuracy but its good enough.
2. Instead of calling out a skill package like in 2.5, imo you should call out class + stat. An example would be tinkering with some magitech might be artificer + dex or artificer + int. (this also feeds back into the earlier discussion about people feeling the skill packages are restrictive)
3. Be cautious when using multiple section monsters with a main section, since if the party kills this main section then the entire monster will be killed.

Not them but yeah, the skill packages exists because Scout, Ranger and Sage cover most checks, but there are still some check that use other classes, and a few cases on which there are no premade skill checks for the action, so you gotta improvise.

Also even on the same package classes will have different values. For example if on the Observation package your ranger has a 5 bonus, while your scout has 3, you may have a harder time doing a search check on the city because ranger can't use search outside natural environments.

So it may be better to just say to use class+modifier to avoid confusion with your players and use the packages when there is no way they can get confused.

On this game, the difference between a Humanoid (elf, dwarf, those bidepal rabbits, humans, etc) and Barbarous (Ogres, Lamias, Drakes, etc), is how corrupted their soul is. The more corrupt it is the more Barbaric they are.

Weaklings are Barbarous with low corruption and so look more humanoid, are weaker than regular barbarous, and because of that they are hated by their society. Thus they prefer to join humanoid society if possible (that also applies to other low corruption barbarous that doesnt have murderous tendencies, like Kobolds).

OGL doesn't do what you think it does.
It allows access to the game rules, because everyone already has access to the game rules; you can't copyright game rules in the first place. All in all, the OGL doesn't actually do anything, but it looked like WotC was bestowing a grand gift to everyone because most people don't really understand copyright law.

What the OGL does NOT provide, and is even explained in the OGL because of course they would use that document to outline the few things they can actually protect, is give access to anything related to the "D&D Brand Identity." Some races have base stats that go better with specific type of classes at the start (which is why Lykant is used a lot as the grappler example or why tabbits are mostly wizards), but in the really, really long run it may not matter much as you can get buffs from equipment, spells and the natural character growths. All character grow 1 stat at the end of each session (you roll 2d6, and you choose one of the results to grow 1 point). For example if you get a 3 or a 5, you can either increase Strenght or the Intelligence Growth by one.

Also there is also the rare races which may have different base stat modifiers. I don't think they can compensate those values with the racial ability, as that one mostly works so they can avoid being ambushed (and to avoid traps on higher levels). Basically to avoid combat or damage if possible

But as Tabbits have mostly Magic/Ranged support backgrounds, stats like strenght vitality or agility doesn't need to be that high for them, tho that doesn't mean you cant use a warrior Tabbit, just that you may have a harder time with combat at first.

Forgot to add as an example of what i said. Grassrunners is a race that has no Mana on their own (MP 0) Yet they don't have actual class restrictions, so they can technically be wizards if they want but that would require them to use quite a lot of Mako Stones (MP replacement) for it to work.

Something similar applies to tabbits when they want to use warrior type classes. They could use them, but they would have a harder time because of their race base conditions, so it's better for them to be on the back as magic DPS or Support

I think one of the best parts of the system is how they mix the lore with the gameplay mechanics. Like how death and revival is used on this setting is interesting, as basically with each revive your soul gets more corrupted (You get a soulscar), with barbarous enemies having more than 2 soulscar by default. You revive by paying 10000G either on church or at the guild.

When a humanoid PC gets a soulscar their physical appearence changes randomly (pale skin, horns, black eyes, etc) and most humanoid communities doesn't want people like that as they think they will become barbarous after a while. Which is actually true as if your character ends up with 5 soulscars, they become a Revenant, a mindless undead monster. At that point your character is permadeath and you have to make a new one.

Also each humanoid city has a security system (Sword of Protection) that detects soulscars and will cause pain to both NPCs and PC with specific number of soulscar or higher, which helps towns and villages to avoid raids from the enemy (and barbarous have a similar sword of protection with the inverted qualities, so only barbarous can get close to them).

My friend group took a long break after our DM had kiddos, so they are very open to 1-3 shots playing a different game, plus I figured it would be nice to get some experience actually DMing. Another example of lore based rules is how Runefolk and Tabbits can't be Priests. Runefolk because they can't see spirits nor hear the voice of god (They can't be Fairy tamers or Druids either because of that) and Tabbits because on their legends, their ancestor were cursed by the gods so they can't hear their voice either. So you are locked out of those classes while using those races (Tho that doesn't mean you can't bluff as a Priest Runefolk spreading the word of the machine gods).

Yeah they do get soulscars, pretty much all races do except Runefolk, which make death so important for humanoids. And there are even some "Barbarous" Divine Spells that can give temporary soulscars to the targets. So yeah you can totally play as a Jackalope Tabbit.

Japanese CoC is wild. They generally separate scenarios to either "Closed" (on rails) or "City" (explore big areas freely and gather clues, usually with time limit).

The scenarios are usually open about how lethal it is (ロスト率) and whether its events can inflict permanent aftereffects on investigators (後遺症).

While most are oneshots, people carry over their investigators to subsequent scenarios pretty often, there are modules that are explicitly marketed to recover sanity for low-san investigators.

Also another interesting point i just found out is that Nightmares are basically soulscared humans in appearance regardless of the parents race. So even the Lildraken (the dragonlike folk) can have Human like children if they are Nightmares...and Dwarfs can have really tall children

I'm hopeful it'll catch on among my friend group. My old DM is down to try anything, one of my friends is pretty diehard into 5e, but still willing to try and likes the art. I know my cousin will like it if he can get past the initial math needed in the character creation (which sounds and can look more off-putting than it is), all their wives could go either way with it, so fingers crossed all around.

I think it means you get a 4 bonus while searching. That's because its generally harder to hide than to search (the other way for concealing, setting traps or using a disguise).

On one of the books (can't remember which) there was a table for the penalties of hiding depending on distance, and the highest bonus was 4 (basically trying to hide in plain sight was the worst option), so my guess is that you get the 4 bonus on searching by default because of that.

Gotcha, that makes sense. I was reading some of the other skillchecks and they are pretty clear on when something gets a -2 or +4, so that little text was pretty ambiguous.

Asked on the server just to be sure, but still not 100% sure if its like that. Like, if it was 4 points harder then it should say Target number 4 higher, not success value. So take what i say as a grain of salt and avoid hiding for a bit until i confirm it.

The Japanese themselves tend to be a really big fan of " flit though all the game systems we can with a one shot or three" and they typically come back to CoC when they invite a new person into their group.
ALSO: USA/UK expats never re-run their scenarios/modules. The Japanese do it all the time. To the Japanese, a scenario is just like a gameboard.

For one, when you think of "porn art", it's some monkey faced dude down an alley getting his dick blown by some dirty crack whore. On the off chance that it's "mature", it's some dirty heroine addict guy getting choked by a tattoed prostitute mother of 3. Shit is -always- ugly, and inorically -always- too shy to stick around for more than a page.
Hentai is 99 times out of 100 about some smoking hot anime babe being molested pages on end. A lot of effort goes into making it look hot, even when it's tentacles or some shit, and it makes sure to show you every angle. It also doesn't help that anime is expected to look beautiful, while western art can be whatever it wants to be.
It also really doesn't help that if you're western and you draw porn, you're a freak, while if you're a jaypee and draw porn, it's not porn, it's hentai, and it's art.

Ah i think i got it. So basically what it says is that the Target Number (the number you have to surpass on this case) for the Notice and Spot Traps checks will have 4 added to it, meanwhile if you use Search check to look for traps or concealed objects, the passive side wouldn't get a bonus (but you would use 10 minutes on the search).

Also the Target Number for the Danger sense check doesnt get a bonus, so you just need to surpass the result of the Hide check. But if you proactively use the Search check (using 10 minutes) then you will have a 4 bonus on finding hiding enemies.

So in summary: Search is used by the players on their own choice and time, so they get to look for and notice stuff without penalties and sometimes a bonus(against hide check). The others instead are Checks the GM commands you to roll for because you are either about to be ambushed, activated a trap or missed something important, so you will get a penalty (the other side got the bonus).

For example: If the enemy set a trap with 7 Success value, then the TN for your Spot trap check would be 11, and as its a contested check and you are active side, it means you need to roll 12 atleast to win the check (Passive side wins ties). Meanwhile if you used search, then you would find the trap with a TN 7, so rolling 8 would be enough.

At the end its not that complex, it just means that a player looking on their own have better chances to find traps than the player that's about to step into one.

When you read corebook 1 you'll see that all 3 corebooks were written together and cut up. I believe corebook 1 is meant for level 1-5 if I'm not mistaken, but if you read all 3 at once you'll be able to take advantage of all the mechanics right off the bat. Rulebook 1 just introduces you to all the basics needed to play the base game.

CR I gives you all the basic rules + low level (lvl 1 to 5) content to play with. The others add more rules, classes and races on top of it (with CR II for lvl 6 to 10 content and CR III level 11 to 15 content), same applies to the supplements.

Basically all books will require you to read atleast CR I to understand the game, and they will either add new rules or expand on the ones already on CR I, but never replace them.

There is also the wiki if you need to do a quick search for spells, items, races and classes, tho its still recommended to read the books because the wiki won't give the whole explanation of how they work (and sometimes the wiki and the books have different info): http://sw25.wikidot.com
