still waiting on those good fantasy maps
can i upload my map?
>>92557530>Our world but the names of the cultures and nations are slightly different World building was never Howard’s strongsuit. Conan holds up solely by rule of cool.
>>92557866I don't really get what's the point of creating a world that's completely removed from our own apart from a couple of names or global map features and then say "yeah, it's totally our world in a long time past". What's the appeal? I can get ancient legends being based on what is still recognisably our own world, like greeks did, or even wanting to add a spin with some OC like atlantis, but those are all additions made to our world as a base. And yet several authors create a completely different fantasy world and try to spin it as either the past or the future of earth. Why keep the link at all?

>>92558412trying too hard
Gonna post my two maps. First one is Tainoles'yeh a region to the north that's about 76 x 42 miles. It's got a whole bunch of undead, some elves, some dwarves, and some vikings, along with a big-ass forest that has a bunch of weird shit in it.
This one is the Dark Island, a location between two of the major continental masses. It's about 204 x 354 miles, so roughly the size of Ireland. It's got two kingdoms - a gothic French/British one and an Arabic one and a whole bunch of no-man's land in between them, including a big fuck off valley. There's some minor dwarf and elven presence, but it's mostly human. Also some lizardmen (more recently due to the actions of the party).
I guess I also have some city maps. The first one is Surleport, the capital of Baiebrume, the gothic French/British city. The place is ruled by a queen who is secretly a vampire.
And this is Khlaj-Imaq, the capital of the Jwahr-Shah Sultanate. The only problem is when I commissioned this map, I had the translations of the various districts but I've lost the translations and have no idea what they mean. I do know that 2 is the palace and 3 is the massive garden, and 7 is the temple district. 13 is some kind of merchant area.
And I might as well post the masterpiece, the world map. This one I drew myself. >>92559602this is the region in red to the north, and >>92559619this is the thing circled in the middle
>>92558891In Howard's time, very few people recognized the name "Iran". Most people knew it as Persia.
>>92559673I've noticed that a lot of "popular" authors just happen to know a bunch of old names about a particular thing and some quirks of it and then they write a story about it. Like Howard who took a lot of classical myth stuff, or Gaiman who's like "what if old thing and quirky in the real world."
>>92559736Why did you put popular in quotes as if it's a debatable label?
>>92558374This looks like a nowhere island, maybe the size of New Zealand

>>92557927>>92557927>>92558443One of the point as well was to evoke a known sense of things, like ok you know just by the name that Asgard/Vanaheim are going to be vikings, that Aquilonia is going to be France, that Shem is going to be Egypt/Levantine, Iranistan, etc. This all done just with an "explicit" name you've never heard but you've already understood somehow. It's actually pretty clever in its laziness and utility.

>>92562691Aquilonia is Rome not France, it's litterally "Land of the Eagle" in ersatz Latin. If anything, Nemedia is France.

>>92557866>World building was never Howard’s strongsuit.Howard's world building had a lot of flaws, but there's a reason the world and setting still has a lot of allure with people. And the names aren't necessarily a fault in that, especially when it's supposed to be a fictional pre-history for our world.
>>92579313As with everything else in the wastes, demons.
>>92559334Maps for fantasy novels are typically shaped to fit on two pages of a paperback. Maps for videogames typically have to fit in a game engine with square cartesian coordinates and they want to pack in as much as possible. to the same map. This is especially true for older games that had to be designed around space limitations. If you've got a might and magic game where you can only fit 24 sub maps for the world, and each map is 128 squares by 128 squares, then the hidden shrine is going to be on a tucked away corner of what would be open ocean on the "southwest coast" map.
>>92558398>>92558412Reminds me of how cool reading the Mallorrean was as a kid when the adventuring party travelled off the edges of the map from the Belgariad.
I soak up tropes like a sponge
>>92587978Tropes are only bad if it is so played out and generic that it is boring. I'd rather have something tropey but very well executed than to trip into the other extreme of so much hyper novelty that a story told in the setting becomes about the setting alone.
Anyone have any good map building tool recommendations for making modern/cyberpunk city maps?
Why authors like huge interconnected continents? World of archipelagos would be far more interesting, with isolated cultures and bizarre ecosystems.
>>92588819They're all scared of getting boat terminology incorrect and looking silly

>>92557530Cimmeria and Northern Pictish Wilderness look like the comfiest lands

>>92590570Very square
Catharsis
>>92557885Love Golden Sun's world. The fact that it's a flat world and that is plot relevant and not just a throw away detail is superb. Feels like realistic geography instead of a "we need a desert, a forest, tundra, and plains all close together" amusement park.
>>92592949
>>92558398Change the name and it's actually rather good. It's hard to split the various biome without it looking strange or out of place. For example it avoid having the cold biome right next to the hot desertYou have mountain that explain why the weather would change drasticallyThe evil land is not easily reachable by sea and quite afar from anyone else.9/10would change the names
>>92559912Completely unrealistic geography, landmass would never look like that.Go back to school kiddoThe name as spot on and very inspired thought
There’s a really cool solo game for mapmaking, with a really uninspired name. Here’s one I made earlier.

>>92557530Was Howard the first writer to make a fantasy setting with cultures clearly based on real world ones?
I wouldn't call this a "good" map but its mine and I think its cool. My handwriting sucks. Sorry for that. The map is vertical it all takes place in a big ass pyramid floating through space. All the different floors are different regions/cities/biomes. I made this map in a night of insomnia fueled lucidity and have been running in this world for more than a year.the marks in purple are supposed to be region markers. I have a haphazardly created document with all the lore for each floor.
