Another game with my WIP Sylvaneth, rematch against the Mawtribes. Unfortunately, I didn't get as much work done on them as I hoped I would this week. The game went a lot better than last weekend, though.

I added a 10-branch unit of Dryads to my army, per the point changes earlier this week, making it an even 1,000 points. Had to sacrifice an Endless Spell to do it, but I think the Dryads were the better choice. They managed to distract a unit of Gluttons, allowing the Tree-Revenants to Waypipe into the Mawtribe backline and hold an objective while most of the other ogres were mulched by my Kurnoth Hunters.

>>92565135
I think the points reduction allowing the Dryads helped quite a bit. I also changed my strategy. Last time, I had all of my units engage different enemy units, which is a terrible choice for Tree-Revenants, who tend to be obliterated by ogres even if they get the charge. This time around, I used them (which is to say, the squad that wasn't with the Dryads) as a screening unit for the Kurnoth Hunters, which is in a follow-up picture.

The Kurnoth Hunters spent a couple of turns breaking down the Gorgers while the Tree-Revenants blocked the Gluttons from double-teaming. The Revenants were murdered, but they did their job. My friend summarized it as,
>The side dishes are foightin back.

During the fifth and final round, the only models I had left on the table were my Branchwych and this Tree-Revenant Protector, who I used to charge the Butcher leading the ogres. He ended up the hero, cutting away the Butcher's remaining Wounds. He managed to survive a volley from the Ironbreakers, but they overran him in the following Charge Phase. The Branchwych, in turn, faced a similar fate from Glurrons down in the Wyldwood. Another big change is that I gave my Branchwych the Vesperal Gem, which allowed her to auto-cast Verduous Harmony and bring back a Kurnoth Hunter.

IIRC, the final points ended up being 14 (me) 16 (ogre friend) with the final round (5). Considerably better than last weekend, where I surrendered by turn 3 and had maybe 1/3 of the points he had.

Been slowly chipping away in my ogre army, but now I'm unsure if I should follow through with all infantry as pale guys. Would having 3 different gluttons units work out if I decide to mix them up? By that I mean have one pale unit, one dark and one caucasian.
Or am I now stuck with these guys. I did regular skin for slaughtermaster and he contrast quite nicely with ice blue base

So, what I'm assuming from your reply is that you don't play. There is also nothing wrong with that battlefield except that I feel it's a bit sparse. The terrain matches fine for what looks like a ruined outpost of some sort. Sure, the objective markers are quite garish, but at least they try to be themed for the game and aren't branded markers that look like crosshairs or something.
Now, if you're truly interested in discussing why AoS tables "look so bad" and not just shitposting for (You)'s, I'll go ahead and share my hypothesis. I don't disagree with you, but they're not as grim as you make them out to be. People are largely playing with what they've got, but even the most "professional" tables look a bit off because in my opinion AoS has LAUGHABLY weak environmental art. This lack of a strong environmental aesthetic leads to a lack of inspiration for homemade scratch-built terrain as well as having a similar effect on GW's own sculptors. Here's a few quick examples of what I feel qualifies as bad and decent art from what I was able to find in short order.
>>
>>92565438
Sure thing buddy
>>
>>92565453
I wouldn't call that Chamon art good "environmental art" since it doesn't actually show anything besides the city and therefore tells you nothing about Chamon itself

That assumes that they produced identical amounts of both kits, which isn't a good one to make considering one is made of resin and for a side game, whereas the other is injection molded and for a mainline game. a better question is whats changing soon.

new edition rolls out in like a month and they are completely rewriting the entire game from the ground up, so everyone else will be relearning all the rules at the same time. they have also stated that the initial indexes and core rules will be free PDFs, so i wouldnt go buying any battletomes right now.

as far as whats changed over the last edition

-added battle tactics and grand strategies, basically faction specific secondary scoring objectives.

-a lot of armies got 2nd waves or refreshes like slaves to darkness, hedonites of slaanesh, seraphon, sylvaneth, and most armies got at least a couple new kits or heroes.

-destruction got a new faction wide god unit called kragnos that can slot into any army in the same style as nagash does for death.

- beasts of chaos and bonesplitterz have been squatted. cities of sigmar got redesigned as the dawnbringer crusade and lost about half its elves and all of its old human models, and stormcast just lost half its range.

-balance has overall been much better than 2nd edition, the new rules team is a lot tighter than the old one, no more sin/bin tome meta

-they started doing seasonal rules, which are 6 month-1 year generals handbook patches that add new gameplay mechanics, missions, spells, etc. kind of cool but also kind of busted and the fast rotation was giving some people rules whiplash

-stormcast and skaven are getting big range refreshes in like a month

-gloomspite got a new tome in 3rd edition that was finally, after 5 years of dogshit, really good and have been stomping most of 3rd edition. particularly squigs and troggs.

-deepkin have seen a bigger variety of list builds than just "oops all eels", including namarti lists that are actually good and the "oops all sharks" build, though i think that was reigned in, and like i said the entire games being rewritten in a month so thats all subject to change
>>

on the topic of 4th edition, the only actually lame thing so far is weapon profiles are looking to be alot lesser, especially with core units.
Stuff like magic and the actual fighting seems to be faring alot better than 40k 10th edition so far
i was kinda doom and gloom about the weapons but the stuff thats come out after the weapon stuff is pretty good looking so far, especially magic and prayers (which i agree should be the other way around, but neither are bad at all they both seem fun)

If you want to build a gitz army they're v strong right now

the boingrots you can build in that box are some of the best cav in the game, the loonboos doesn't do much, the troggs are really strong and tanky brawler units, the stabbas are a good screen unit that can contest obj from 9 inches while they hav 20 or more models. ALWAYS build the 3 netter stabbas

in the next edition weapon options are supposedly going away so you can prob just build the stabbas with pokin spears or the spiked clubs.

that being said, all the units in the box are great and fun to paint. the loonboos kinda sucks but he keeps getting his points cut and his moonman sculpt is really cool. You can lean heavy into trogs, squigs, spiders (lol dont do this), or wizards with their subfaction rules. jaws of mork (squigs) are the clear kings but Kings gitz and glogg's megamob are good too

oh yeah and if you do end up rocking with gitz, look for their old squigalanche box and gobbapalooza
>>
>>92566924
the $240 bundle also comes with a battletome thats going to be out of date in a month, which im sure isnt helping sell that kit
>>
>>92566932
If that means that the majority of games aren't going to end with a single miniature on each side chasing each other around a 6x4 then im pretty stoked. It'd be cool if the game continued to look like a large scale battle past the second turn instead of turning into follow the hero after t1

Is it over for Hedonites players?
>command points change definitely BTFOing Pretenders subfaction (best Hedonites subfaction)
>can charge during opponent's turn (hedonites first turn strategy destroyed)
>combat phase changes and objective control further privilege units that resist damage, instead of units that alpha strike
4th edition bros... is it fucking over? is our decadent reign finally at an... end?

It's very matched play tournament centric now
>warscroll battalions removed because they're too thematic
>subfactions detached from fluff and made abstract because they're too thematic
>command trait/artefact/spell lists prunned because they're too thematic "why print an option that isn't meta? I'll never pick that"
>list building flexible reduced with only having 2-4 units you can increase in size, now it's any number but just increased once from MSU - no max size discounts
>Seasonal meta shifts with new significant ghb rules: you can't play battleline for the next six months because non-battleline get +1 damage against them! Wizards are op for a season! It's so fun like my jank purchase driven tcgs
>>
>>92567278
In all fairness, even in a fluffier themed list there was little reason to EVER take some spells/traits/artifacts since there were ones that were just blatantly better than them and even the most casual of players could tell.
>>
>>92567289
I feel like the answer to that is just not printing things so dogshit not a single person will take them over the course of the edition, most of the stuff like that isn’t even fluffy.

If we lose fun shit like the Idolator trait or the Lethis subfaction’s gimmick I’d be incredibly dissapointed, wilder stuff like that is great.

I know rules are about to change with the new edition but what role are these guys even supposed to play with the new marauders? They're like the elite version of the horde units that aren't legionnaires and aren't just normal chaos warriors, what niche could they possibly have that doesn't either suck or overshadow their chubbier cousins
>>
>>92567289
Yeah, you have to take what helps you win. There's no wriggle room in this narrative dice game for fun, just waac
>>
>>92567552
It's not that, It's just that some of those "Fun, fluffy" options were just so situational that there was a good chance picking them was the equivalent of taking nothing in most games, or just a straight downgrade to something else. You don't always need to take the best of the best, but sometimes the worst of the worst is so bad that even super casual players can tell (or quickly learn) "This sucks". Its like how if you wanted to, you could've technically run a unit of 6 liberators or whatever, but you never fucking would, even if the fluff for your army was that they were made up of the surviving members of other battered or destroyed groups, since 6 costs the same as 10.

Yeah, they're gone because it was unbalanced and list building was hampered by having to fit in the meta battalion. You literally had to buy stuff you might not even want to just to win and then not every army had battalions as strong. Awful
>>
>>92567278
I thought it was reaction to a triple Great Unclean One battalion briefly raping the game resulting in GW deciding to balance them in a radical way
>>
>>92567866
It's more about abstraction; gw doesn't have to write up lore for the background organisation of a battalion or invent an interesting ability to go with it. Core Battalions only unlock the limited set of advantages so they have to do a lot less work and they're technically more balanced

>>
>>92568109
>I wonder if that's the reason why they stopped putting boards into warcry and kill team boxsets
They still out punchout tokens made of the same cardboard, they reduced content because they're greedy.
>>
>>92568090
They don't have to put effort into it, they can just copy-paste the past lore sections, but they're even struggling to do that from what I've seen.
>>
>>92568124
I just wish they sold booklets that collected all the artworks and concept sketches of a faction
>>
>>92568034
Like, yeah, in a sense. Every printed page represents an investment of time, labor, and materials. I wouldn't know how precisely they've calculated the monetary cost per page, but I'm sure they have pretty exact figures on how X volumes of material translates into Y number of printed pages. I also don't doubt they have figures for how many pages they can print per workhour, because it would be weird if they didn't know that. And they likely also know how much it adds to their electrical bill to run their printery for a set period of time. And after all the printing is done and they get to transportation they've gotta know how much stock can be move every step of the way, and to know that they've gotta know how much their books weigh individually and in bulk. There's a number for every single conceivable thing here.
>>
>>92568079
A few, with their abilities rewritten and lumped together in the vein of the core battalions which isn't the same thing at all. Your point being?
>>
>>92568177
That if the reason to remove Warscroll Battalions was that Core Battalions require less effort to write then why the fuck are they still writing both Core Battalions and Warscroll Battalions?

Why not simply doing one or the other? Why invalidating old Warscroll battalions would be a requisite to simply start doing the new ones like they are doing without creating a new category to waste more page space?

Friendly reminder also that a shitload of warscroll battalions weren't better than the warscroll battalions they are doing now (see pic related)

>We want to spend less effort so instead of wasting 4 pages for warscroll battalions we are reducing them to 2
>But we are also adding core battalions so we are back to 4 pages
>>
>>92568213
Because instead of being like this
>>
>>92568218
They're lazily padding out the ptg section like this
>>
>>92568174

>>
>>92568221
You really can't see how that proves my point? Anon the two pages aren't really different from a effort standpoint. You don't need more pages to do one than to do another, even nore because in the latter example you also have the core battalion page to had that didn't exist in the former

Could change in 4E but their path gets them a 5+ ward if they can steal an objective that your opponent is controlling. They can also potentially get extra command points from any god speakers in the unit, so a reinforced unit has better odds of banking a bonus point for all out defense to hold the line. Once they’re dug in they’re pretty hard to dislodge. I would say though they could either use either -1 rend or a slightly better base to hit/to wound. They’re incredibly pillow fisted and they’ve got the problem the Marauders have where fulfilling their oath takes them from meh to good instead of from good to great

I'm in Paris, France. We had a 70 persons tournament this week end and i'm part of a PTG league with like 15 people (with updated map of our territories + mandatory lore of each army and battle).

It's basically an unwritten rule to go into tournaments with fully painted army, even when there is no paint points. However the best painted army usually have a prize similar to the best player, so people are motivated to paint their armies.

Pic related is my first opponent, he had a troll army with converted trugg and troggoths

azyr and ulgu have no lore
chamon only has aos1.0 lore

we're left with aqshy, ghyran, shyish and ghur, but the last one is a nothingburger while aqshy only has the MOST lore, not the best lore

final tossup so is between ghyran and shyish and despite nagash being really cool, ghyran simply has lore at all levels: early fluff, middle fluff, late fluff, numerous cities, numerous factions, interesting dynamics between factions (sylvaneth in particular), a number of characters have been established as coming from here or doing shit here, and now the best of the two biggest dawnbringer crusades and it seems like it's only getting better now with kragnos's final showdown, the placement of new summercourt and the death of phoenicium

Ghur could have been made a lot more interesting, ie having gotten a significant amount of new lore, if the campaign started by Seasons of War: Thondia had been continued, which would also have gotten us new incarnates ala the Krondspine one

>I think ghyran's fluff could be a lot deeper
that's without question
ghyran asks for some metaphysical insight on the origin of souls in much the same way shyish delved in their fate, and related to that it begs for a development or piece of history about idoneth searching for a solution to their flaw in there, one of their main subfactions is settled in ghyran too
it also inevitably requires a similar level of interaction and rivalry with the factions of death as it already does with the forces of nurgle and the age old conflict between natural order and artificial order, and on a similar note the canonical dichotomy between symbiosis/competition of ghyran and ghur has been woefully unexplored despite the current edition being the era of the beast AND having been kickstarted by alarielle's rite of life in the first place
ghyran asks for more insights on it being one of the most important source of food and water for the colonisation of the other generally less inhospitable realms

ghyran is a breadbasket of possibilities and should be as important to aos cosmology as hysh/ulgu are for the day and night, azyr for the stars, and shyish for the afterlife, hell, given the mythological inspirations of the realms ghyran pretty much demands to be used as yggdrasil and have a role in maintaining the correct cycling of the seasons/interactions of the spheres in the void

ghyran is the worst realm in a memetic sense, but it's also a good realm for anyone who wants to read anything about aos and is the absolute richest wellspring of possibilities and you have no idea of my frustration with how GW has seemingly lost the momentum for the exploration of the realms that it had at the start of the 2nd edition

They are taken very very occasionally by armies that aren't stormcast, that can't take tree-revenants. They question is does Lumineth want these, and they're primarily competing with dawnriders and windchargers. I'm not sure they even beat out hunters at 30 extra points.

Would you like to see an army of Kabuki Ogors on the table?

I painted a few of these up as a one off Warcry warband, they're all still WIP. The snotlings are painted as different oni colors. >Chart the continuing history of Warhammer Age of Sigmar in War for the Mortal Realms – a new omnibus collecting companion novels from each edition of the game with new interstitial sections bridging the gaps between major events in the Age of Sigmar. It’s a perfect way to get caught up with the affairs of the Mortal Realms before the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar lands later this year, with exciting stories by Chris Wraight, Josh Reynolds, and Darius Hinks.
What are the events happening in this edition?
In 2ed we had a lot of shit going on before the broken realms books, now 3ed had the crusades and Ushoran breaking out of his quarantine zone.
Comparing both editions 3ed is pathetic in the lore department
>>
>>92571021
Not especially, but that's just because my army backlog is getting a little out of hand. Though I did just lose BoC and Bonesplitters when they were both almost done...

I'd say the only new projects I'm musing over right now are DoK (I have a little stuff, not enough for an army) and figuring out what I want to do with Warclans, especially now that Ironjawz and KB are probably going to separate tomes.
>>
>>92569880
Yeah, they allow a unit to fight on death and with squishy grots it's quite powerful. That said, they're legends or unsupported in 4th edition which comes out in May but given they have proxies it's not a bad deal anyway
>Loonboss
>3 Stabba champions
>2 Shoota champions or 1 shaman and a champion
>Boingrot champion or Loonboss on giant cave squig
I'd definitely pick them up if you like them on that basis but they're also supported in Warcry which lacks a cancerous competitive play community that'd outlaw them if they ever were unsupported in that later

autism continues, perfection eludes me but I'm settling on one model for the movement of the realms
>all realms have their respective surface facing upwards, so all the realms have the same stars above them, but only the lower realms can see the others above them
>all realmdiscs also rotate on their central axis
>every realm, except hysh and ulgu, have their respective level of the the aetheric void where they have their circular orbit around the center of the void (where there's the allpoints/eight points)
>the orbit of hysh and ulgu are perpendicular to the other realms, this means that as hysh progresses upwards and then downwards, every other realm sees hysh rise from their realm's edge and fall down the other due to the rotation of the disc
>for added complexity (not shown in the first scheme), the orbits hysh and ulgu also intertwine
the order and level of the realms follows the wheel of magic (with hysh and ulgu being exceptional)
there's more complexity possible like the realms altering slightly the facing of their realmdisc, or the speed of their revolution around the voidcenter, or the idea of hysh and ulgu having erratic enough movements that sometimes they distance themselves from the center enough to cross the orbit of the other realms or moving together in such away off the axis altogether (creating the various configurations of the wheels of magic seen in the old world and in aos)

distances not to scale of course

Could is doing a lot of work there, "time is a constant" is probably countering the weird not-really lore that the first gotrek book used with time literally moving at different speeds in different realms, that was dumb and isn't the case anymore.

Different realms have slightly different lengths of days, so it can't be possible that they're constantly synced.

right after this they squatted BoC and the old Ard Boy models from AoS so its pretty obvious CoS empire is going to TOW and its only a matter of time before Dark Elves, Dwarves, Ogres etc go to TOW and AoS gets all new stuff.

I have some questions about endless spells. Each wizard can attempt to manifest one a turn and dispel one a turn. Does this count towards normal cast / dispel limits? What are the points associated with them used for? Which ones can each wizard attempt to summon? Can an endless spell be attempted by multiple wizards?
>>
>>92574619
>Does this count towards normal cast / dispel limits?
Yes.
>What are the points associated with them used for?
You can only cast an endless spell that you've paid points for in your army list.
>Which ones can each wizard attempt to summon?
See above.
>Can an endless spell be attempted by multiple wizards?
No, same as any other spells.
Note that all of these answers are changing in like 2 months anyway when 4th edition hits and revamps the magic system.
>>
>>92574693

I've just finished celestial spear and read godeaters a couple books before that, and while I enjoyed them well enough for what they were, I have to say dude is nowhere close to Reynolds' writing ability. He does come up with some interesting set dressing which he does a good job fleshing out, but his prose is almost nonsensical stream-of-consciousness at times. He introduces fantasy slang or words but then uses some of them so rarely you have no way of figuring out what they mean. Do it. They’re an elite army that’s easy to paint and fairly cheap. Their start collecting beastclaw raiders are likely all bought up but the vanguard is good and it’s worth like 800 points or something crazy. Get that and some other dudes that you like.

I would start with some gluttons or iron guts though, just to dip your toes in the water and see if you actually can stand hobbying them before you dive in.

But I myself and painting faster than ever and I’m making a list of some GSG characters I stilll need to finish my first army. I’m considering mortal heavy Nurgle but I really want to start Ironjawz. I’m hoping and praying we get a Christmas box with the new pigs, hard boys and wreckers. IJ have no bundles at all left. Hopefully they get a spearhead that’s not more kruleboyz. Other than that Lizardmen are in 3rd place. I’m waiting for the new rules to drop and continuing to work at my backlog before then.

You mean the beast claw raiders? The ogors on the big ice age rhinos and monsters? They’re out of stock probably because they’re worth a lot of points and they’re strong on the tabletop, and have been for several years.

The stone horn kit can be built as 4 different monsters, but the really relevant one is the frost lord in stone horn. It’s like 500 points and absolutely fucks shit up. It’s been the strongest, cheapest, and easiest way to get an ogor army ready.

Unfortunately a lot of the Beastclaw sub range is old resin crap like the sabertooth tigers and the yhetees and Ice pelt hunter

You can try to get a few big monsters to hold you over if you’re gambling on them getting a refresh next year. It would feel p shitty to spend 8 months on your gluttons only for them to get mogged by the new chad gluttons in any possible refresh

>For every 10 marauders, you can build one Champion with a choice of two heads, plus a Doombeater and Icon Bearer. You get the choice of 13 interchangeable shields, 11 hand weapons, 11 spears, and 30 unique heads to use between five male and five female bodies.
You can buy two kits to build one with only men if you're that much of a faggot

Great painting. Normally with fyreslayers I can't tell where one unit ends and the next begins. Good job making them distinct.
