What's your favorite of your faction's centerpiece models/large targets?
>>
>>92601618

https://ufile.io/xf93zqil

I haven't worked on it since January but almost all of the conversions apart from some of the Regiments of Renown/Special Characters are done.

What I need more than anything is playtest feedback/after action reports to know if tweaks are needed.

Necrosphinx, but the Bone Dragon isn't too bad.

The Lizardmen dinos are all cool, they're tempting me to start a lizardmen force for TOW despite not knowing how they work at all
>>
I hope the Warriors of Chaos arcane tome comes with some option for a marauder/norscan list (however they want to fluff it). Kind of sucks rn being unable to field a pure marauder army without any Chaos Warriors or Chosen.
>>
>>92606859

Yeah, that'd be cool. More options, more fluff. Perhaps changing Eye of the Gods for something like the Four Winds, like how the Bret Armies of Infamy have different vows.
>>
>>92606725
>tq

I love the screaming bell as a unit but don't really care for the modern model. I've got one of the metal ones but it's a bit small for TOW profile so I'm planning on converting it. Needs to be wider and I'll need to model the Rogre the modern iteration calls for. Doomwheels are cool too.

I copied an assortment of banners from leadmountainwidow on some cardstock and painted with regular acrylic paints. Final step is to cover it in mod podge, but could probably use a regular varnish.

If youre playing competitvely; terrible, any infantry faction focused faction blows ass in ToW and the less callvary you have the more you're going to get face rolled.

If you're just playing with friends for fun or narrative shit, they still suck but they're at least really fun to play

I meant for 8th, but really I kind like how the Wizard Hat would work.

He found an ancient circlet that lets him wield considerable power, but now he has it causes him to be forgetful and prone to confusion. His Hierophant has considered using these episodes to usurp power, but he's seen all too often the rewards of ambition and treachery. Now he just tries to keep his King on the right track, at least until he returns to himself.
>>
>>92607979
neat.
>>
So in TOW have they taken steps back from 8e hordes? Did they overcorrect? Are infantry units 10-20 strong useable or do I need to blocks of 30-40 skeleton warriors?? How about cav, get I get away with 5 Black Knights or does it need to be 10 strong to survive a round?
>>
>>92607800
Probably means the engineer, plague monk, assassin choices. The choices the first two unlock and the fact that all 3 share the same 0-1 per 1k slot makes list building a bit of a pain.
>>
>>92608037
Ita basically 5th. Dragonlords stomp everything, and if you don't have one you'll likely lose. And you'll still need a level 4 in every list, despite the fact that magic is braindead now.
>>
Does the bone dragon mini let you build a High Priest on foot? Or does it shares parts with the Tomb King in the howdah?
>>
>>92607979

In TOW the TK BSB lets you re-roll all leadership tests so it makes the stupidity very unlikely to matter.
>>
>>92608037

10-20 strong infantry are totally usable.
>>
>>92608037
They overcorrected. But you'll hear dozens of secondaries say it's great and the game is literally perfect.

You need to be at least as wide as you are deep to gain your rank bonus (otherwise you are in march formation and lose it) so 25 skellies as 5x5 is decent to get your horde +3 rank bonus for having at least 3 full ranks and having 1 spare rank to absorb casualties and maintain your Full rank bonus.

If you want more than 25 skellies you need to go at a minimum to 6 wide 5 deep. Generally with shitty horde infantry you want to keep your width down and maximise relative depth as you win on rank/static modifiers, not combat power. Thus 5x5 (25) is probably the best bang for buck but 6x5 or 6x6 would work if you wanted more bulk to ensure you keep your rank bonus after being charged by something nasty. Size also helps with making sure your Fear is triggered when fighting or people charge you due to larger unit size. (Either they fail charge or if they are in combat they get a -1 to their To Hit rolls)

Cav don't win on ranks or fear obviously as they don't have the unit size for it. They win on combat power and preferably some magical support to lower the enemy leadership so that they break and are run down after a single charge. So that usually means using Blood Knights on their own or Black Knights with an attached character to buff their offense to ensure victory. (Blood Knights with the Vampiric Terror buff are also very nice)

Furthermore, Black Knights do not have Dark Vitality so they cannot march and instead need someone to give them Reserve Move (like a necromancer Hellish Vigouring them) to move like normal cavalry.
>>
Id like the tomb king dragon if you told that shit was an alligator, dragons don't fit the theming of that army at all. It also looks stupid.
>>
>>92608262

It's clearly an alligator-dragon-thing.

The bone dragon goes back to older editions.

I like the way it looks, taste is subjective.
>>
>>92608267
>>92608262
#rd opinion here, I also like the way it looks but if they told me it was a giant alligator monster rather than a dragon I might like it more
>>
>>92608256

The game isn't perfect but it's way more fun than I thought.

It does have some balance issues that need addressing. High elves should be slapped down a bit. Hagtree Fetish needs to change.
>>
>>92608283
I would argue that it needs a complete rework from the ground up, as bad as 8th ever needed it.

But I'm not even really playing TOW anyway, so I'm not really that invested one way or another. The models are coming back, and that's the important thing.

The crocodile-dragon is perfect for not!Egypt, which the Tomb Kings are. I can get disliking the general shape of it though.
>>
>>92608262
Yes anon we know. It's been whinged about in every thread. Why don't you just sculpt an alligator skeleton yourself? I'm sure there is a lot of anatomical reference out there. Or just buy some plastic Halloween trash and convert it from that
>https://www.walmart.com/ip/4-Baby-Alligator-Skeleton-Prop/940194798
>>
>>92608291

I just don't understand why they went back to point percentages for characters, instead of limiting them by game size.

One lord/2k points was such a better idea.
>>
>>92608367
Some of the changes are obviously pointed, like the neutering of magic and the emphasis on strong characters over hordes, bit some seem entirely arbitrary, like anything to do with lost building, or the way that extra ranks and frontage works now. It's like they didn't know what they were doing.
>>
>>92608256
This has never happened, you're just obsessed with 8th and all you do is complain and never post minis
>>
>>92608399

I don't think the emphasis on strong characters was intended.
>>
>>92608166
>still need a level 4 in every list
Damn. It just feels cheap to take a 'Lord' level character in 1000pt games. Then again, it feels odd when I see lists that are 50% Lord and Hero's. Does TOW even make a distinction between Lords and Heroes?

>>92608255
Neat.

>>92608258
Thanks for the input man. I'll take this in to consideration. I love the Blood Knights but the 'lore' for my army doesn't really have room in them. Autistic, I know.

Hate to bother your further but do you have any recommendations for magic items and character upgrades? Haven't really been able to figure out what's most useful just from reading over the rules.
>>
>Thread Question:
As much as I love VC, Coven Thrones and Mortis Engines are pretty dumb. The Black Coach is silly-but-fun though not really a centrepiece model in the age of AoS influenced nu-GW. So I guess the Zombie Dragon? It's a pretty cool model. I don't have one and haven't really planned on getting one but I may yet. I prefer my generals to be on foot in the thick of it though.

No worries, I'm corporeal only myself for theme reasons.

I think a BSB is great, particularly with Master Necromancers nearby as the re-roll for invocation of nehek is great. On that note I really like sceptre of De Noirot for the extra invocate. Particularly as you can later on (or even a different necromancer on the same turn) heal your Necromancer the would loss if they suffer it. The Helm of Commandment for Wights in a combat unit of skellies is nice as well (nearby BSB lets them reroll the test) to buff their WS against enemy standard infantry to make them harder to hit. Thus you can win on combat through static res as you are negating enemy combat advantage.

I think in a similar vein you can go pretty hog wild with magic casting with vamps with less of a downside as you can heal back wounds lost from it. With that in mind the spell familiar is really nice as it lets you maximise the number of lvl 4 casting you can do.

Accursed Armour is ok on Vampires as they have the WS and Initiative to spare. Full Plate is hard to get and the T increase is godlike.

If you want to run the Black Knights separate from the main army body and want to do a lot of movement you need to give them the standard of Hellish Vigour or have a necromancer on a steed escort them (Maybe from behind or beside them rather than in the unit itself). You can get away without having the escort if you are happy to spend an extra turn or so setting up the initial charge against defensive armies sitting in their deploy zone.

Not a fan of Crown of the Damned as you don't get the BSB reroll on a stupidity test.

For your combat characters I think cheap and cheerful swords of might/biting/striking are good. (Gets around ethereal/Enchanted shield on enemies)

Warbanner is a must take as it helps either skellies do static res wins or helps your knights cause a break test on hopefully LD debuffed enemies.
>>
>>92608852
>with vamps.
Casting with necromancers sorry. Vamps are terrible spellcasters in this army book as they can't get LVL 4
>>
>>92608179
I believe you can, after all if they shared parts you couldn't build the king on foot and the priest on dragon at the same time, but his legs are bent since he stoops over the howdah so it looks odd. You could probably change his legs for the standing ones though. One way round it is putting him on a mount since it looks more natural.
>>
>>92608900
You can get them to a faux lvl 4 with Master of the Black Arts and then Skull Staff and/or Spell Familiar. Coupled with the fact they're a much better melee fighter than Necromancers and it's not a bad shout actually.
>>
>>92609069
Yeah but they give up armour unless they want to spend a big chunk of their magic item allowance
>>
>>92609127
True, but with a Talisman of Protection and Regen you've got a bit of a shield. Though of course if you're going down the sorcerous Vampire route you should be avoiding melee anyways. But the point being that if they HAVE to fight in melee you'd back them to do ok
>>
>>92608578
>Coven Thrones and Mortis Engines
I'm pretty torn on them myself honestly. I think they would have worked better as carriages being manned and drawn by ghosts or long dead retainers, rather than slabs of masonry carried aloft by spirits.

Not that I'm thinking about it I would how well a Celestial Hurricanum would convert to a Coven Throne/Mortis Engine. The Hurricanum looks quite a bit smaller but the base is apparently the same size.

>>92608852
Thanks man, this is really useful.
Yeah I was tossing up between throwing my Necro and Wight BSB in with the skellies or mounting them up and pairing them with the Black Knights. I think I'll keep them with the skellies. and give the standard of Hellish Vigor to the BK's.

>I'm corporeal only myself for theme reasons

its themed around an Empire Knightly order being corrupted by a Blood Dragon so 2 units of blood knights and skellies with some dire wolves.

>>

They're fine? I personally prefer Felbats, but there's nothing wrong with them.
>>
>>92610445

I'm converting a blood dragon into Wallach harkon (blood chalice and sword). I also converted some musicians (horn blowers) from the blood knights as they don't come in their kits.

Honestly one of my favourite conversions was a Ogre pirate for mordheim. Tricorn hat crushing through the rotten planks beneath him from the weight.

The standout part of direwolves is they get reserve move and vanguard so you can move them after deployment and then twice on your turn so you can basically be in the enemy deployment after a single turn. It's a lot of movement and can put a lot of pressure on an isolated Warmachine quickly.

the end times books are all visions of one potential series of events that mannfred gets to see firsthand at the beginning of the first book when he's trying to scry into the future, the actual end times still have to play out and mannfred will have to change shit with the knowledge of how much he fucked up in the visions

the mortal realms and the age of sigmar are happening in a bubble of reality in the realm of chaos, so their existence is technically connected with the end of the world but also not if the end times are averted due to the way chaos is paradoxical

if tow changes something about the setting that I don't like, then it's historically inaccuracy from historians in 2520

Jervis Johnson actively hates good gameplay, because he hates the idea that a player who is good at games can win more games than one who is bad. He likes who wins to be based on their social standing within the group (i.e. him) or based on how powerful their army is.

Basically he's a scrub who got his ass whooped by people who are smarter than him too many times.

Jervis Johnson left over the poor quality of AoS. He now writes wargames for fun; see V&F which he made for home games with the Perrys.
I also have no idea wtf the other guy is talking about, when Johnson is allowed to design without restrictions he makes very balanced games like the aforementioned V&F

Yes and no, they are supposed to give a feel of the faction as well as sell them. If 2008 Matt Ward had been writing the Dwarfs army book they would do nothing but slaughter green skins, skaven and elves. The War of the Beard would have been a crushing one sided stomp by the Dwarfs and in current times the only reason that they hadn't taken over the Old World is because they are valiantly defending the surface from the combined might of the Skaven, Goblins, and some other deeper darker force that he will never bother to explain. That might hype the Dwarfs up but it doesn't really capture the tone of a people on the decline and hanging on by their fingernails. You can sell a faction without making other factions look weak or pathetic.

Hell with elf's you can take a great weapon since asf cancels it out

You can have multiple SoR.
You only get 1 ToP.

And ogre blade is not super necessary on elf lords. As you say its 65pts to add d3 wounds to a great weapon.

You can also take a dragon helm + seed of Rebirth + ogre blade. And if you can suffer the impetuosity called or gives you a 6++ on top of that anyway.

You can also just take a pair of princes and no magical weapons, give them both SoR, give one armour of caledor for the 5++ and cheaper plate, and give the other ToP and dragon helm.

So now you have 2 t6 9w characters with 4 ws7 s6 lance/great weapon attacks and 6 ws7 s7 ap dragon attacks, one has 2+/5++/5+++ and the other 3+/5++/5+++

Seeing it that way sounds like fun actually, and is great for yourdudes. How was my general at these two battles 100 years apart? Historians got it wrong. How did my general die and then show up in another battle shortly after? Historians got it wrong. It's a cool lens through which to look at the games, since you can treat them as historical reenactments but not worry overly much about internal consistency.

Is there any reason that I'd want to make use of Motley Crew (specifically for black orcs)? If both the attacks and armour save use the front rank then there's not much help in having the back ranks different other than against shooting.
It seems like the rule adds a lot more accounting and more modelling constraints while only adding a situational benefit.

We all would.
But motley crew is for lots of units.

In the case of black orcs its there because the plastics had a mix of great weapons and 2 hand weapons. For your benfit its a point saving measure, for example I can run:

Unit of 20.
4 × GW
6 × GW + Shield (boss)
5 × HW + shield
5 × HW

Against shooting I have 3+, and the fails resolve as wounds to each group 1 at a time so its only once I hit 8 models that my front rank of 5 starts to lose GW and this shaves 29pts with almost no difference to effectiveness.

No. Even the few pieces of content that are *generally* inoffensive(of which there are few, most are genuinely heinous) - on the level of a low-to-middling BL narrative - inevitably have at least one massive FUCK YOU WHF FAGGOTS LUL shitnugget in there to ensure you never forget that This Is The End.

Love those dwarf models. Currently working on a beastmen army but when the Arcane Journal hits there's a strong chance I'll dive into my classic dwarf metal collection.
While I don't have enough of the classic longbeards to have that conundrum I am currently going back and forth whether my Ironbreaker unit should consists of unique individual models or if I should go with duplicate models of the cool ones from 6th? ed.
>>
>>92623308
The 6th ones you have there are also each a unique model it looks like, so mix them up in the unit.
>>
>>92623618
>The 6th ones you have there are also each a unique model it looks like
Yes, those are the unique ones. If I wanted to make an entire unit of them I'd have to go with duplicates. The alternative, as depcited in that image, would be to go with a mix of different models and in so do doing have a regiment of individually unique models.
Truth be told I'm tempted to go with just 6th ed ones but with some minor conversions to any duplicates to not have a bunch of clones. That does feel a bit a blasphemous though.
>>
>>92623721
It's a bit silly isn't it, a reluctance to convert and "ruin" such old sculpts when back in the day they'd get chopped up for whatever reason!

True. I reckon it's a result from me viewing them more like pieces in a collection which is why I'm hesitant to engage in what's my favourite part of the hobby. Mind you, I wasn't thinking of doing anything big with it. More likely than not it would just be weapon swaps, some touches to their beards and maybe the addition of the odd bag and other travelling equipment.

One thing that does make it easier to get over the apprehension is that I've already done some light touches on a couple of other models and, due to having way more standard bearers than I need, turn some duplicate standard bearers into longbeards carrying orc heads on pikes.

The fact that the Jaeckelsalone-blog has done some tasteful conversion of similar classic models is also a big relief. After all his blog is the reason I started collecting old metal dwarfs.

What do they usually discuss about?

Exile Brets, best Brets?
Heroism Baron floats around for choice monsters/characters to Killing Blow. Lucky Heirloom on a wound reroll really helps.
Axe Baron heads up the KotR unit and chops through a lot of things.
Paladin chills with the Yeoman Guard, dooting down enemy fliers on a rerollable Ld8 and giving them an overall static CR of +7
Wizards join the Mounted Yeoman and Reserve Move in and out with choice magic missiles and what have you.
Pegasus Knights start 10" up the the board and are generally a real pain to deal with.
Brigands Scout up and threaten anything that's not massively tough and be a general nuisance.
>>
>>92624392
Heroism baron isnt good enough imo. You dont have the damage output to credibly threaten the HKB, and without the 5++ you are banking on that 2+ save a whole lot for someone with only like 4 wounds total.
>>
>>92624433
I'm not just going to ram him into the nearest dragonlord, they'll more than likely be grounded so I can use him to pick off an ancillary unit to gain back the ward save before going in. Plus with the wound reroll, he has nearly as much chance of proccing KB as a Heroism Duke.

I havent done the maths but my gut tells me that thats unlikely. Another key thing to remember about the duke is that he was both durable enough to survive combat until he gets his HKB and also had a high enough damage output without it to pose a reasonable threat to regular units.

Hes also not likely to break many units on his own, so you cant rely on "well hes going to kill someone for his ward save back and THEN pick a fight with the enemy nasty", hes liable to end up getting stuck in a prolonged combat and then either lose to static or just die when an enemy character joins. You could put him with the pegasus knights obviously, but at that point you are down to two actual units (peg knights + kotr) and neither of them are going to be good at dealing with enemy characters.
>>
>>92624310
I really doubt they sit so close to each other

Funny how much dragonlords warp the game.
>>
>>92624602
Don't forget it's a guarantee I'll have access to giving him Hatred and Frenzy, and those said wizards are going to be pounding the ancillary units so having him mop one up is certainly a viable outcome.
>>
>>92624704
Your highest level wizard is level 3. You COULD get frenzy + hatred off, but its hardly guaranteed. Its also only range 12" and cast before movement.

Its going to be nice when it works, but it wont work anywhere near reliably, its also going to fuck you in the ass in some situations (frenzy)

>>92624797
With 14" effective movement thanks to Reserve Move, staying out of dispel range and in range of them is much easier. And I won't be casting it willy nilly, positioning a 10" flying skirmisher for next the turn again makes things easier.

Not slayers for one, overdone, contorted, and not thematically present during TOW. Pick something else, miner/expedition force with rune of brotherhood introduced in the journal so you can get your characters into the scouting rangers, maybe better rules for miners that isn't scratching their asses for 3 turns. Engineer guild is also a little overdone in theme but I could see it. Maybe a royal throng, or Norse dwarfs with some northern influences, maybe even the fabled mammoth.
