Recently read "Advanced FASERIP" retro clone. Gotta say the point buy system is a welcome addition.
>>
>>92651447
Anything that makes the system worth while?
>>
>>92651489
It's a solid supers system with lot's of powers that's both detailed and comprehensible. It's a d100 system and I always wanted to get into one of those.
>>
>>92651489
I'm also a big fan of how the system handles "power stunts" basically you can make a roll using your powers in an unusual way like creating a tornado using super speed, after which you can put a mark next to that "stunt" if you repeat this stunt multiple times you can make it a sub power.
>>
>>92651677
>>92651543
Sounds fun, I'll try to give it a look

How is your Supers campaign going?
>>
>>92650966
What is a concept that you wish you can try out?
I'll start
My charter idea is the worlds best basketball player who gained powers with constant training.
He now fights against evil after a group of extremist eco-terrorist interrupted a game for him
>>
>>92650966
I love cape games for the same reason I love cape comics. Great power is interesting when you have to worry about what you do with it, not some anime style slog to get it. I don't want a "I have to get stronger" training montage, I was the Danger Room where people have to figure out their limits and how to keep control of power they have no experience with.
>>
>>92652046
>What is a concept that you wish you can try out?
>What is a concept that you wish you can try out?
I wish I could run/play a superhero game with spy elements or themes. With a team of international men of mystery fighting shadowy international cabals and those damn commies.
>>
>>92652046
Based and Shaq-fu pilled

I had the idea of an alien super who comes to earth from a planet that is similar but genitals are reversed so "he" could see men and be very interested until he sees what they have in their pants, and he'd not be attracted to women.
But that seems like it'd only be fun for a short campaign gag character.
>>
>>92652181
I once ran a game about a metal band with super powers, but their tours were a cover, they'd carry out heists in every city they played in as mercenary spies/thieves.
>>
>>92652270
>a game about a metal band with super powers
Sounds like lot's of fun
>>
>>92652423
The lead guitar could amplify sound into dangerous shockwaves, but the more often he did and the louder the sound, the less control he had, so he'd bring his guitar and shred as hard as he could to cause random explosions around him.
>>
>>92652478
A power getting stronger as it is used seems game breaking even if you loose control of it, but still awesome. What about other PCs?

Where do you prefer superpowers to come from, are they from advanced science like picture related, a gene that’s basically magic, actual magic, a mix, or some other source, and what’s important to consider when making that choice? I like superhumans created via alien technology myself, makes it easy to explain why we don’t have armies of Captain Americas or Carters.

>What is a concept that you wish you can try out?
The original idea we had was something like The Challengers of the Unknown/The A-Team, a team of professionals that deal with world ending threats using just their (limited) resources and their witts but we end up just playing a regular capeshit thing. Maybe after we finish this campaign we can try.
Btw have you read picrel, anon? Close to what you mention but not really
>>
>>92654599
I like a mix of different origins to be honest. As a player I would say ether the born with powers option, or the "gimmick" i.e having a powerful device like a powered armor or a magic ring.

The baseline of the power wasn't at the game's limit, plenty of room to go up without bending any rules.

Part of the appeal of cape comics is the varied origin stories. Sometimes it's inherited power, sometimes it's the result of an accident, sometimes it's training, sometimes it's a natural ability of a nonhuman species. It's all good.
>>
>>92654599
I'm very much anything goes. The only time it matters is if you're introducing things to mess with certain power types (e.g. Mutant Flu) and I tend to steer clear of those because they're rarely fun

>>92652046
>hero based around shadow powers
>was a former supervillain against a man with light powers
>attempted to use a morality reversal device on the hero
>device blew up in his hands, causing his own morals to be reversed
>acts as a superhero now
>struggles to get approval because of his past as a supervillain
>grudgingly accepted to an extent because his former enemy is helping him get back on his feet, so to speak, and is a good friend now
>the twist being the machine's reversal was temporary and he was pretending he stayed good
>except he finds himself genuinely enjoying being a hero and that some people actually like him

Almost had a chance to run this once, unfortunately the dipshit GM we had took
>former villain is good friends with former arch enemy
and apparently read
>they're gay lovers and fucking nonstop between adventures
and completely ruined it. The game never got off the ground because they did shit like this for every character and people refused to do a second session.

Was one of the characters a PC? Because if so, the player can just say "no, they're not a couple" and that's that.
>>
>>92659546
No, the hero in question was an NPC in my backstory, and after the DM first decided they were fucking I told them several times they weren't, just because they're good friends didn't mean they're fucking. The GM still insisted they were.
This was during session zero so nothing even started yet, but I could see the GM was going to force it anyways so I just opted to not bother showing up again. I know at least one other person didn't either because the GM was again insisting that his pc was gay and fucking every male in his backstory who wasn't a family member. He was weirdly obsessed with it.

Like, I have DC Adventures, DC Heroes, Smallville, Mutants and Masterminds, Power Rangers, I just can't find a group though
>>
>>92661746
Probably the most common superhero game around is MnM. Prowls and Paragons also seems to come up in these kinds of discussions. Lastly you have FASERIP/Marvel Classic RPG which is popular among old school types. Those are the big three but you could also use any of the "universal" systems for a superhero game like Savage worlds, Fudge, GURPS etc.
>>
>>92650966
>want to make super villain with very powerful ability
>always ends up being some variation of "he can bend reality"
How do I stop doing this
>>
>>92662136
Think of powers as having two dimensions" the first one can be called "potency" and the second "applicability." Potency is how much raw power an ability has. Character A can lift a car over his head, but character B can bench press a continent etc. The other consideration is applicability, powers with a lot of applicability are like Swiss knifes so thy apply across a lot of situations, things like shapeshifting, telepathy, etc. Reality warping is both potent and applicable so you need to ether make it more narrow or less potent.
>>
>>92661509
Ok. She just looks like from My Hero.
>>
>>92662136
You can try splitting it into a few narrower powers that overall achieve the same effect. For instance, Superman doesn't have Absolute Temperature Control, he just so happens to have both heat vision and frost breath
>>
>>92650966
I'm always a fan of power copycats personally. Being able to slap a supervillain with his own power is always fun, plus being able to sub in for a teammate if they get knocked out or something

Only 3 players show up last friday and it was the final game with one of them since he's moving overseas, and it's funny cuz at the end of last game they all got demolished by picrel already posted a thread with the story but for a completly different topic, you can find it in the catalogue I guess, I aint reposting it and the guys that didn't show up are coincidentally the PCs that end up the worst so I just justify it as them recovering from that (the girl at our table text me saying to just say "she was on coma or something")
As for the leaving guy we literally did a Poochie and he went back to his planet at the end of the session.
I might use his character as an NPC someday, if this campaign goes long enough I guess, I just feel like as in comics, if you are gonna "remove" a character you should at least make his return take a while and not almost a year later
>>
>>92660559
So the villain was your character? Should have stuck to it just out of defiance and played the character as 100% straight.

Aquaman's joke has metamorphosed from "he's useless outside of aquatic situations" to "just because he's an aquatic specialist, people forget he has powers outside of water." He's got super strength and durability on land, too.

To put it another way, just because a hero is specialized in a particular biome doesn't mean they have to be useless outside of it.

Anyone got suggestions for 1950s "evil-commie" Russian villains?
Characters would be great, but even just general themes would work.
>>
>>92668654
>The Sputnik
A Russian mad scientist transported his brain into a hovering metal sphere with antennas with abilities like shooting out lasers and sending out miniature drones.
>The Crimson Heat
A sentient cloud of radioactive fallout capable of emitting bursts of radiation, believes that true communism can be built only after the world has been purified by nuclear fire.
>Hammer and Sickle
A pair of twins with extraordinary psychic powers. Hammer a boy with Telekinesis, Sickle a Girl with Telepathic powers. They have been adopted by the state and raised to think of the communist party as their real family. Unknown to them their real parents where sent to the GULAG for anti Soviet sentiments.
>Lady Dragon-strike
An expert assassin and spy trained in all manner of martial arts, her skills allow her to stop a man's heart with just a few strikes to the body. Her ring allows her to phase through solid objects and become invisible.

An Egyptian God got summoned by foolish mortals who had an intent to inflict plague and devastation. Set. We were all horrified, but Set turned out to be a weirdly decent guy. He skull-crushed the cultist who summoned him, which was bad and we had to fight him for that of course. The paragon had a fistfight with him (none of the rest of us could do much, besides the secondary paragon/speedster playing support so we all just got drinks and watched), and then Set asked if we could stop (since he was summoned at fucking noon this was 6 hours later in-game) because the sun was going down and he wanted to go talk to his dad about something.

Very confused, but happy since the paragon was at death's door, we agreed, and he promised to come back the next day. And he fucking did. So we resumed the fight, and it ended in a draw at the second sunset where he asked to go talk to his dad again, so we agreed.

Rinse and repeat for like 3 days.

When he came back at the next sunrise, we asked if he'd like to just chill for a bit instead and explain what he had against the night, because he could have killed us each time, we were ending each day thoroughly fucked up.

Turned out, he explained to us, his job is to help his dad put Apep into a headlock and submission hold every night, so he was literally fighting us all day, then going and punching out the cosmic Devourer of Worlds all night, then coming back to fight us AGAIN the next day.

We politely asked to call it quits, since he wasn't actually going to hurt anybody or unleash the plagues in question (and the cult leader who summoned him was kind of a dick), and he said sure. Then told the paragon that if he ever wanted to give up the cape and tights look, he and his dad have a job opening, he left us his card (an actual fucking card, in papyrus and gold lettering), and left.

>Conrad Bonobov
A bonobo ape uplifted to superhuman level superhuman intelligence through advanced scientific means. He betrayed and assassinated the scientist who created him once he tried to defect from USSR. He now works with the KGB.
>Katyusha
A time traveling android from the future sent back in time with the goal of preventing the collapse of the Soviet Union. She has the power to control and augment all technology around her.
>Cardinal Burn
A Latin American priest teaching "Liberation Theology" Cardinal Burn had an epiphany after developing his pyrokinetic power, causing him to declare war on the sin of Capitalism. He leads a cult of religious fanatics against all who would oppose him.
>Siberian Husk
An ice zombie from the depth of Siberia wielding supernatural command over ice. Husk's Motivations are mysterious and unclear. However for the time being he follows the commands of the soviets since they have his phylactery, destroying it would cause him to die, something that can't happen otherwise.

It was also partly because they weren't allowed to have too much physical violence in the show, and since a good bit of Aquaman's other abilities mainly involve being able to punch and take punches really damn good, they didn't really have much they WERE allowed to do with him outside of "he's the fish guy."

If they're period appropriate or appropriately period inappropriate they're a nice concept. If they're just a vehicle for a bad accent and racism they'll get annoying and boring fast.

Of course if everyone's cool with it and the point is to be bawdy and gonzo, then sure Captain Ireland can be a high functioning alcoholic with the ability to fly and blow up cars. Might be good for a one shot or two, but it'd need more depth and a more serious take for a serial.

Other than super-speed, what are some powers that can easily become OP and could use firm limits to prevent this?
>>
>>92696856
>Time Manipulation
Aside from the fact that there are basically no counters to stopping time, time manipulation can easily lead to time travel and that needs defined rule or it will break the setting.
>Telepathy
If your running a superhero investigation/detective game telepathy can break the kind of tension you would want out of a good whodunit.
>Immortality
Odds of death are generally pretty low in a supers game but you might want to keep the possibility of death around.
>Power mimicry
A character who has everyone's powers might make other PCs redundant unless there are limits in place.
>Magic
Since Superhero settings rarely have "rule magic" it tends to function as a do everything power you might want to keep tabs on that.
>>
>>92696856
super speed isn't OP
>>
>>92697331
magic isn't different from any other power source
>>
>>92697528
Some systems have magic or sorcery as a separate power, in particular FASERIP and a couple others. Basically you spend a turn to "cast a spell" which temporarily gives you whatever power you want, then you use the power during the next turn.
>>92697521
I used to be in denial about this but all you need is to look at the likes of Flash to see all the ways in which it can be broken. Higher end speedsters can time travel and move between dimensions and travel the multiverse and that IS broken.

>>
>>92697610
of course, we're talking about games, so whether it's retarded in authored fiction irrelevant.
>>
>>92699230
To be fair, without breaking the universe and inventing separate 'speed related powers', in most games with 'physically modeled' powers, super speed is very very powerful.

In systems where it lets you play with the action economy, that in itself is over the top bullocks. Acting more and moving more is always going to slap.

In systems where you specifically can't do that but there is tactical combat, reactions or movement capabilities can keep you out of AOEs, duck out out of ranged and out of LOS and generally give you very forgiving and oppressive positioning.

In systems with a narrativist bent, thinking and acting faster is a gigantic boon and often needs to be met with the same or an order of magnitude greater of bullshit to be handled.

Overall super speed isn't gamebreaking as a concept, but depending on the power level a good GM needs to put on the brakes (heh) because it has a lot of secondary utility that can be hard to account for.
>>
>>92652046
A character with dimension manipulation is something I have been kicking around for some time. I mean a character who can alter their physical dimensions becoming 2D, 3D and even 4D, 5D etc. Gaining different powers based on each dimensional form.
>>
>>92700007
yes, most games are garbage because they attempt simulationism, completely missing the point of a superhero game.
>>
>>92700007
It's an attack, an active defense, and a travel power, and costs exactly as much as buying those separately would. The GM doesn't need to put the brakes on anything, since it's already balanced out of the box.
>>
>>92702259
Actually depending on the specific powers, it may cost considerably more than purchasing separate powers.
>>
>>92697521
>Superspeed isn't O-

>>92702292
Time Travel is a separate power, sorry.
>>
>>92702292
And you still need to overcome the target's defenses, like any other attack.
>>
>>92702259
Only in systems that cost it correctly.

You do know there is more than one superhero RPG system right?
>>
>>92702840
So why are you complaining about the bad ones? Just stop using them.
>>
>>92703452
Some systems play well but don't balance well. Once upon a time I was trying to run a supers game in a Fate derivative called Strands of Fate and I was really impressed with how flexible it was until I realized there was no real underlying framework for it and I'd have to be building everything by exception and fiat. The resolution mechanics and everything though were nice, it was just a garbage fit for anything that wasn't going to be me making autistic prebuilds for all the players.

That said though, clear scaling and balancing is a strong point for any non-level based system.

Can someone who knows how to do shit in MnM help me?
I want to make a character with a detachable head, found picrelated in 2e to 3e conversion guide. The main question is for the head's price - does it have to include all of the skills and advantages of the original, or does having a Controlled Extra mean that I can just use the body's skills for actions with the separated head?
>>
why are you still playing d20 trash? it's not 1970.

Thoughts on Ascendant? I've never played a super hero rpg and thought this looks interesting, but I'm worried it might be too crunchy

If a player wanted to be a patriotic type superhero, I wouldn't allow them to be from the past but otherwise I wouldn't have a problem with it. Assuming they're an american patriot they'd have to face a country that mostly hates patriotism now

>just copying earth for your setting

How do you feel about space cop organizations in supers settings?

>does it have to include all of the skills and advantages of the original
No, that's only the case with Duplication.
>does having a Controlled Extra mean that I can just use the body's skills for actions with the separated head?
Having Controlled just means that your head can't disobey your orders. Make sure to take Mental Link as well.
You are basically going to be creating a completely separate and much weaker creature with the attributes of a disembodied head. Go hog-wild with it.

Mixed feelings to be honest. The trope itself is cool, but I used to play a space supers game once, and the local space police where basically gods who showed up anyone tried to travel to another dimension or do a large scale teleport etc. I used to call them the no fun police.

I'm assuming you're asking for 3e.
This is from Power Profile Summoning Powers. Remove Multiple Minions.

What do you think about crazy rich superheroes? Would you allow a player to have a millionaire or even Billionaire player character or is this sort of thing only for "big shot" supers of your setting?

>No, that's only the case with Duplication.
But isn't Duplication just a premade example of a Summon power?
>completely separate and much weaker creature with the attributes of a disembodied head
So it does have to have the same skills and advantages as the base character?

Sorry, "having only a portion of your capabilities" is a bit too vague.

My late OG grognard friend who used to GM our games always spoke highly of the oldest cape system, Villains & Vigilantes.
My online games in play by post on old style forums were mostly D20 homebrew.
All my in-person games in high school were TSR Marvel, so I can personally recommend that and the retroclone, FASERIP.

I'm sorry anon.

Yeah, I miss him every day. Weird how you can become so close to someone you've never met.
He used to play and draw Bronze-age John Byrne X-Men/George Perez New Teen Titans style characters. I learned how to treat a game as collaborative fiction from him, instead of just "playing to win", like I was in a video game.

It's an oddball case that has unique rules and restrictions in order to make it cheaper to use.
>So it does have to have the same skills and advantages as the base character?
Not unless you build it that way. It's a completely separate creature that you are building from scratch using the Summon rules.
>Sorry, "having only a portion of your capabilities" is a bit too vague.
It's just saying that if you summon a disembodied hand, then you lose the use of your hand as normal, as shown in the actual power.
Honestly, it sounds like you're getting ahead of yourself. The first question is, how extreme do you want to take this power?

OK, I feel like there's a misunderstanding here.
I'm trying to build the head to be the same as it is when connected. So, it knows the same skills and powers as the character with the head on it's shoulders, it just doesn't have proper manipulators, which I would do through some abilities being lower.
I thought that Controlled + Mind Linked would mean that it can be directly controlled and thus doesn't need to have skills itself - it would just use the characters skills. But I guess that's not how it works, and now I have no clue how to price the head.
I did want some weird things with the head, but they're related more to the Summon power than the head's properties, it's just a normal head.

jesus Christ stop using that awful system
>>
>>92717863
Well there's a few ways to go about that.
Use Summon and use the points to just mimic the skills and abilities you want your head to use, while saving points on things you don't need and taking negative attributes like STR, DEX, and AGL. The Summon rank will depend on how high you make your attributes and skills for your main body.
If it's a more minor power, then talk to your GM about just making it a Feature and take powers like Remote Sense and Immunity (decapitation).
Again, it really comes down to how extreme you want to get with it. What else does your character do?
>>
>>92718474
>mimic the skills
OK, now I get it, I do need to give it skills. Thanks, now I've figured it out.

I guess this is it? See you folks in the next thread.

why is it autosaging with 150 posts?
>>

/tg/ threads are on a timer. It is currently set for threads to autosage after one full week from the time of thread creation. This was put in place to stop a particular bumpfag who would necro fluff threads for months.
