More blunt methods like paralysis inducing constraining mechanisms which censor undesired specific actions done by someone also exist.Translating the latter to gameplay has proven a lot easier, admittedly. So you can make it so someone can't fire at you but they may counter play with a little extra creativity to get you hurt another way. Sorta like in demolition man.

I'll usually adjust the lore of whatever setting I am playing to make it incredibly rare or outright unknown, and then play up the horror aspects of it as high as I can go.If you pull it out again after that it tends to just feel like unfair bullshit, but if you give it sufficient gravitas and use it sparingly, it retains the shock value that it needs.
