Guys like this used to be insanely popular. You don't see this type too much anymore, though. What happened? Why are edgy elf or elf-adjacent wizard swordsmen no longer in?

The elf king in Hellboy 2 had a great design

Contrarianism. Now it's the lawful good deus vult Paladin that's edgelord central.

Probably more.

All trends fall off eventually and come back again. Like werewolves, vampires, zombies, etc. I want to see characters like Duke Nukem, Quake's MC and Doomguy make a comeback. I thought we might see that after the most recent Doom game but there's only been an uptick in gore and body horror.

Characters who don't quip every 2 minutes are deemed edgy and problematic. The cool thing now is to have archetypes ripped off from the MCU, with a dose of American politics, neon bright colors and your personal sexual fetishes.
>>
I wonder, if The Crow (1994) were to be released today, would people like it?
>>92705630

Those are rooted in 80s action movies and the latter two on space marines also. But Expend4bles (2023) was a box office bomb...

Yes we won't get rid of Sephiroth imitators in JRPGs any time soon.

Maybe it's just me but that stuff always comes across as "Write about a sexual preference you don't have", because some boxes have to be ticked, and nothing seems to indicate the commitee designing it is having a sufficient amount of fun.

Even in the books? Like I know people love geralt because Witcher 3 geralt quips and was clearly modeled to be more handsome than even his Witcher 2 counterpart

It is when it's just a lazy coat of paint and a catchphrase divorced from the original context. Many of them are just chaotic stupid edge lords screaming about murder in the name of a god that doesn't exist in a given setting. That, or they simply don't actually care about the religious part and just want an excuse for zealotry.

It's more the hardcore Crusader Purge-aholic attitude that's getting people to label it as edgy. There's a huge difference between a typical 3.5 paladin and Azrael from DC Comics. A lot of people play paladins now like Doom Slayer or a 40K Space Marine.
>>
>>92712860
Did people ever play Paladins like do gooder knights in shining armour? It feels like something that people said happened but never did.

Or maybe they did and people who played Thieves who wanted to backstab tied up prisoners and be edgelords called it lawful stupid when the Paladin wouldn't let them murder defenseless people (even though Big Daddy Gygax says that even if we may not like it that's what peak lawful good looks like).
>>
>>92706997
>But Expend4bles (2023) was a box office bomb...
Because they changed it so the leader wasn't an action star, but arm candy, all while leading a team of 'hip and cool' newcomers.
>>
>>92712947
Ackchyuallly Gygax said it's okay for Lawful Good characters to execute evil people whenever it's convenient.
>>
>>92712947
>Did people ever play Paladins like do gooder knights in shining armour? It feels like something that people said happened but never did.
Used to happen way more in the 90's and 2000's. I remember it a lot in a lot of MMOs like WoW, people used to roleplay like that pretty frequently. And alignment in the older editions somewhat mandated it, but a lot of people maligned the stupidity some people interpreted that code mandated.

In case you failed to notice, the modern fantasy faggot types are taking their cues primarily from them as well, just, you know, faggy.

I don't think they've ever been THAT popular.
For any Elric, there's always at least two Conans.
For Illidan, there are thousands of Arthases and Groms, and Thralls, and on and on.
People used to chuckle at cosplayers and fanboys even at their time.
They're kinda cool, I like them myself, but more classy archetypes I think are still more popular and even to this day.
That doesn't mean they're leaving, they always had their own niche for some people, and it was always their intended purpose.

Pre-Tolkienian dwarves were kobolds, elves were fairies, and orcs were demons, and in contemporary fantasy fiction, elves represent the industry's hatred of European colonialist mentality.

Elric
>Elric is the last emperor of the stagnating island civilization of Melniboné. Physically weak, the anemic Elric must use drugs (special herbs) to maintain his health and vitality. From childhood, he read freely in the immense royal library and learned of the world outside the Dreaming Isle. Perhaps due to this in-depth study, unlike other members of his race, Elric has a conscience. He witnesses the decadence of his culture, which once ruled the known world, and worries about the rise of the Young Kingdoms populated by humans (Melnibonéans consider themselves separate from humanity), along with the threat they pose to his empire. Because of Elric's introspective self-loathing and hatred of Melnibonéan traditions, his subjects find him odd and unfathomable.
>Elric is an accomplished sorcerer and summoner. As emperor of Melniboné, Elric is able to call for aid upon the traditional patron of the Melniboné emperors, Arioch, a Lord of Chaos and Duke of Hell. From the first story, Elric uses ancient pacts and agreements with not only Arioch, but various other beings—some gods, some demons—to help him accomplish his tasks.
>Elric's discovery of the sword Stormbringer serves as both his greatest asset and disadvantage. The sword confers upon Elric strength, health, and fighting prowess, allowing him to do away with his dependence on drugs, but it must be fed by the souls of intelligent beings. In the end, the blade takes everyone close to Elric and eventually Elric's own soul as well.

Illidan
>Born a night elf and sorcerer, his pursuit of power led him to commit several horrific acts against his own people, which earned him the nickname "the Betrayer"
>Driven by his thirst for power and his desire to impress Tyrande Whisperwind, Illidan made a pact with demons to secure the entrance of their leader, the fallen titan Sargeras, into the world, largely by the energy of the Well of Eternity; this act earned Illidan the nickname of "Betrayer". The efforts of Malfurion Stormrage, Illidan's twin brother, disrupted the Legion's plot, with Illidan himself turning to his side and assisting in the demons' defeat. After recreating the destroyed Well of Eternity, Illidan was imprisoned for thousands of years.
>During the Third War, Tyrande released Illidan from millennia of imprisonment, hoping that the Betrayer would redeem himself by battling a returned Burning Legion. Though Illidan fought to defend his people, he soon slipped into darkness; after absorbing the energies of the demonic Skull of Gul'dan, Illidan became a demon, an act for which he was banished by Malfurion. Fleeing the wrath of the night elves, the twice-condemned Illidan allied himself once again with the only entity that would accept him—the Legion.

>Born in Menzoberranzan as the third son to Matron Malice, the leader of House Do'Urden. His father is a weapons master who secretly hates drow society and teaches Drizzt his martial skills as he reinforces Drizzt's innate moral code.
>During a raid against a group of surface elves, Drizzt finds himself unable to participate in the slaughter with his fellow drow. He pretends to kill an elf child, but actually helps her to escape. When the deception is discovered, his father is sacrificed in Drizzt's stead to appease Lolth, the drow's goddess. Following a war against another House, Drizzt curses his family and the evil drow ways and escapes Menzoberranzan into the Underdark.

>Nuada Silverlance is the Crown Prince of the Bethmoora clan (also known collectively with other magical races as the 'sons of the earth'), and the last warrior of the elves. He is the only son of King Balor, and the twin brother of Nuala. He attendedthe creation and the reception of the Golden Army. Nuada is anti-humanistic and focused on preserving only his own kind and other non-human lives, destroying all people, but is not an absolutely evil being; rather, he blames humanity for all the unhappiness of man to life and considers their destruction will benefit non-humans.

>>
>>92719352
>1000 year old, slave, soldier, dark elf, motivated by lust, white hair, golden eyes, tattoos, ring, life in a cutthroat court of scheming nobles, bargain or deal with a dark power
Meliss vel-Grizz'k quickly rose in the ranks of the dark elven Maznorrian military. She was practically born to be a fighter, and her wiry build did nothing to diminish her great beauty. As a high-ranking soldier she was allowed many captive pleasure slaves. However, her beauty ended up backfiring on her, as she was set up to fail on a mission by a nobleman that wanted her for his own.
For her failure she was branded and sentenced to slavery. She spent centuries in a drug-addled stupor. This came to an end when the humans, for once, struck back, and raided the noble house where she served. By a miracle she survived, and when the drugs wore off her head cleared. She found herself in the ruins of the noble's manse, and there she found a ring that housed a serpentine demon spirit of great power. In exchange for her soul in death, she was granted black magic, but she was marked with twisting serpentine tattoos running up and down the voluptuous curves of her nubile, onyx body.
All she remembers of the raid is the face of one human man, an utter beefcake with sun-bronzed skin, rippling muscles and blazing eyes. Exiled, and consumed by lust for her unwitting savior, she sets forth from the Kingdoms Below, carving a bloody swathe through all obstacles with her curved greatsword and dark, ophidian magic to repay him in her own way. Along the way she has lots of raunchy sex. She wears a red spidersilk bikini and fights like a cackling lascivious demon to whom bones are just a suggestion. Rumors circulate on the surface about a golden-eyed elven witch of boundless lust, decadent mirth, and exotic beauty, death or misfortune to all she meets. There's a bounty on her both as a surface villain and an escaped slave.

Not really edgy or alone enough, I think, but Lust is a group motivation.

>How is one both a street urchin and a slaver?
Just because you started off on the streets doesn't mean you need to end there. Maybe life on the streets taught your character about natural hierarchies, power, and might makes right. Not too far of a jump to becoming a slaver when you have that kind of upbringing.
>>
>>92719352
Born into slavery over 5,000 years ago, with tattoos carved into his skin to forever remind all of his lowly origins, this black-haired dark elf with piercing silver eyes was adopted by a member of the nobility and given a second chance at life. This noble patriarch was a member of a mysterious order, and it was this very order which trained the young dark elf slave in various fighting styles and arcane lores. When his training had been completed, the former slave was subject to the initiation rite that all members of the order must endure: demonic possession.

The goal of the rite was to prove one’s self-control and strength of will by mastering the demon or at the very least being able to pacify it. Those who could tap into the demon’s power and make it their own were those most highly-prized among the order and destined for greatness.

With a diverse and dangerous skillset imparted upon him by the mysterious order he was now a member of, the dark elf man sought his fortune by taking on mercenary work. Driven by a thirst for power at all costs, the ex-slave was always seeking methods to increase his ability. This came to a head when he was opposed on the battlefield by a mighty warlord who drew immense power from a cursed gauntlet. Tapping into his demonic powers, the dark elf was able to slay the warlord. Claiming the gauntlet for himself, he found a new and terrible power to add to his repertoire: that of the a cursed gauntlet.

People who just look at the cursed runesword and declare them the same character have never actually read a Elric book.
>>
>>92717994
Outside of some narration in BM, Kain is far less the emo edgelord than Raziel pre defiance, but both still fall way deeper in the Conan side. Even if you ignore characterization, then they are already not in the same category as Elric and Drizzt by sheer virtue of the writing actually being good for the bulk of the series by which i mean everything but some blood omen 2 turn of the millennium era dialogue.

Hack might be a bit harsh, he knows how to put ideas to paper and churn out enough of them. He just doesnt know how to write and keeps sucking his own dick over ideas he himself copied as well (or stuff like claiming that the crooked D&D reinterpretation of the full compass rose version chaos sign for Elric was his idea when we have the og artists in book credits and know from his own books that his was only copying the pure arrows which happens to have been sometimes intentionally overlaid on regions of the sea known to include pirates on trade maps such as those used by the italians (derogatory) as he would know having written and co authored on historical fiction projects that included mediterranean trade.
LCD fart sniffer is more apt.

I still hold that the original Elric stories are good enough for what they are and that the first prequel story is good but their was just way to much filler added in over time.

That is flagrantly untrue.
Gygax said that paladins have the appropriate investment of being arbiters of justice to execute prisoners for crimes committed in absence of an established jurisprudence.
That means if you catch bandits in the mountain, you can execute them for crimes of murder and rapine, without having to drag them to a town. The other side of this is if the paladin is WRONG, they will immediately Fall. Great power, responsibility.

you may have missed part of the introduction which explains that the elf king regretted the bloodshed when they first unleashed the golden army. The point is that they understand that if they did commit a genocide they would not be worthy to rule and everything that was good about them would die anyway, so it is better to fade and leave a legacy of peace that man could learn from rather than perpetrate an act of war and genocide which would either wrongfully wipe out man or just cement them in their warlike ways and cause all fairy life to be purged (he already expends what, 3 species of fairy in his terror attacks).

In 5e's PHB alone, Drizzt was made into the posterboy for elves, was mentioned in the description of drow two pages later as "the one drow who broke the mold" and credited as the in-universe role model of all other good drow, his friend was used as the tutorial for making a character, and there was at least one excerpt directly from the Drizzt books. Despite all of that, nobody actually gives a shit about Drizzt aside from committed anti-fans and people who think he's still marketable. It's almost impressive. Somehow, Drizzt has managed to become omnipresent yet---at the same time---utterly irrelevant to everyone except those few people who are still getting the rage out of their system from that one time someone came to their table with dual-wielding drow ranger Brizzt Bo'Urden 30 years ago.
>>
>>92733619
Its interesting, 5e as a product line had a massive sea change in 2018 when Crawford took complete creative control leading to among other things a rejection of established lore as important to the game design. 2018 was also the year when CR's second campaign started and the mass of people that was brought in by Stranger Things back in 2016 had a guidepost to orient around.
This led to 5 years of vague lore and little focus on settings and it wasn't till this year that the new generation of D&D players got their Drizzt in (Insert BG3 charter here, Likely Astarion).
Driz is old news and like you said a boogeyman. Forgotten due to the broken continuity of the playerbase.

Weirdly, MoP was the best expansion. I think it's because Blizzard not giving a shit about continuity wasn't a problem with it, since it was all a new continent.

Battle for Azeroth was shit, though, and Shadowlands was somehow worse than shit.

I've talked about this before with people but I feel like there's a real problem with modern players wanting to play the special snowflake character but unable to handle any of the negative aspects that may go with it. So instead of being the stoic silent stranger they become the rainbow sparkle demon. They want to be loved universally everywhere even when playing as *heck* spawn and will cry if someone so much looked at them cross eyed. Back then you had dudes playing guys like Drizz't or D and yeah they were always "popular" but they were also on varying levels in universe pariahs. Their friends an allies like them but you'd walk into a new town and the bar tender would be all "We don't serve your kind here" and the player would think it's cool that NPCs thought they were dangerous or whatever. Now everyone expects to show up and get a parade just for being there when before you may just walk away knowing you reached one person.

Elric is a subversion of Conan. Instead of a strong barbarian who wins a kingdom through his might you have a weakling sorcerer who loses his kingdom by being too cerebral and trusting for his own good. Once that subversion made a big enough of an impact on fantasy culture, maybe there wasn't a pressing need to recreate it. Also, the core Elric stories, being released as they were in the '60s and '70s, came before the big trend of edginess, and I think they hit different as a result. If they were written nowadays (and, I'd image, to some who read them today), I think they might seem less compelling. By way of illustration, I have a brother who's not particularly into fantasy stuff and when the LotR movies came out, he was mocking them for being super cliched with generic elves, dwarves, orcs and shit. So I think context does matter.

People want the cool parts and want them immediately. I used to be like that too.

My fav character, and he didn't start as my fav at all because it sucked for a long time, and also the fav character of my GM was a monk in 3.PF. I got really good stats and decided to play one thinking it would be amazing he even started as the cocky LN who thinks he's better than everyone...the reality it sucked for the longest, specially because I didn't know what to do with him, he even had a couple of levels in fighter. Also in the story had a lot of fuckups but he kept standing up. Survived two nearly TPKs, ended losing an arm and an eye and later getting replacements (clockwork arm and fire elemental eye), got PTSD and survivors guilt, his alignment changed to LG because he now refuses to let anyone die and always gets involved helping people, etc. Took 5 years (several hiatus) and now he's at 14th level and he can act as the stoic cool character, he earned it (also course corrected him through the levels and now he doesn't suck mechanically)
