Anon was right, collages are somewhat beneficial, especially since they're randomized (I thank op, I would spend an hour resizing and putting the pics together as well) and most of the times you get very amazing or not even models pics that are bigger and occupying most of the collage and ugly/single models pics relegated to tiny specks.

So I picked up a trio of Wargames Atlantic (WA) boxes, all from the Baron's War range, Peasant Levy, Mounted Serjeants, and Foot Knights

This is me kitbashing a special little Foot Knight to use a two-handed sword while pointing. I've got some thoughts to share, maybe people here would be interested.

The WA Foot Knights is 4 copies of a single sprue, each sprue makes 6 knights in the style of the 12th or 13th century. The knight bodies are split into torso and legs, with 4 of the torsos having a built-in left arm with a socket for a shield. So if building knights with two-handed weapons and no shields, you kinda only got a max of 8 bodies without kitbashing.

This guys torso is one of those without a built-in arm. If you zoom in on the picture I uploaded, you can see that the cloth chest actually has marks left from the sprue mold being machined. I sandpaper'd away most of it, but you can still see the marks.

His arms are from the knight sprue, they're all fully chainmail, but the hands are actually from the WA Guards sprue. I sliced away the glove-covered hands I wanted, sliced the ends of a mail'd arm, glue'd em together. The raw arm from the Guards sprue is just cloth, it doesn't carry the feeling of weight.

He has a little dagger on his left hip from the Oathmark Elf Heavy Infantry sprue, it's sized correctly and feels a bit ornate, appropriate for a knight. I'll do some later sculpting to put a little link around it, connecting to his belt. I figure he would have some back-up weapon, and if his right-hand mostly carries the sword, then his left could pull out the dagger.

I'm always tempted to glue on some little pouches, bags and gubbins to these knights, but I really, really like their silhouette and style. Once built, they look much better than I first thought they would.
>>
>>98238385
Oh, I totally forgot to mention, there's a little armoured shoulder pad at the bottom of the pic, it's from the WA Guards sprue. I'm not sure if I should glue it on, or if it would be too much. This guy will be more of a fantasy knight, but I do find myself really enjoying his clean, simple silhouette. Adding on one or two pauldrons, gluing on some little antler or goat horns to the side of his helm, even sculpting some greenstuff fur cape, I think that would ruin it.

It have the same problem of hooking as synthetic brush, what’s the point?
>>
>>98238700
I can see that making sense if you baby them like you have to with a synthetic. Kind of get the wetting and paint release properties of sable but some of the stiffness of synthetic if you don't like how soft sable brushes are.
I could never though. Give me that weasel fluff. I've never successfully not immediately fucked up a synthetic brush.
>>
i just ordered some golden maple sable brushes. i assume they are not genuine kolinsky but i don't care if my brushes are made from chink weasels as opposed to genuine siberian weasels. these brushes are like 1/3 the price of the """real""" shit and i am pretty sure at the end of the day weasel pubes are probably all the same.

>>
Having one real hair brush for specific purposes is useful, but modern synthetics are so good there's no good reason not to use them for 99% of your work. Ignore the hipsters itt who own multiple brush soaps and haven't touched a synthetic in two decades or that wasn't 100 for a dollar.
>>
>>98238909
I've never used any of the "high tier" synthetics, but I've used mid level ones that aren't like bulk bin from the craft store.
I genuinely hate how they release paint. I'm sure it's a skill issue and I could figure it out, but the way I thin and wet my brush with sable #justwerks. With synthetics the bush is either too wet and dumps paint off, or has no liquid and like 3 brush strokes of in between those where it works properly. I noticed this when I was trying to use my synthetics for basecoating, and I even hate them for basecoating broad areas.

few things may help restore this,
1) good brush soap to remove acrylics
2) possibly use some tiny surgical scissors, you know, them curved ones, snip away at the loose sides

hopefully paint hasnt gotten too deep into the head, dried up back there and causing all this, but its still worth using soaps and such in the future, and take extra caution not to completely soak your brush with paint or tilt it backward when it does, since that crap will just run up to the base and dry out. Shits a nightmare, right?

We're surprised you don't, because it totally just looks like you do. This is not a good thing. You are wasting your precious time.
>>
>>98239269
Based on that picture above, I'd say you are lying. Any Contrast paint followed by a flesh wash looks better than the skin colour of that model above.
>>
>>98239269
You do go for very subtle gradients and do focus more on the base + wash parts. I think the thing that stands out most is that you don't seem to accentuate highlights or edge highlights, and people are very used to that being "the standard", so it doesn't compute for them when they don't see that accentuated. I think your paint style is very clean and looks good.

Spain is into art. The real question is where the French at?
>>
Is it normal for metallics to always look a little thick even in thinned layers? It's 100% just the surface reflecting more light that makes me think it looks thick, right? Using ProAcryl and AK metallics, which are the absolute thinnest out of the bottle I've ever seen and even when thinned down I feel like there's "texture" -- this is just me autistically noticing the overlayering of flake combined with the increased lightbounce, right?
>>
>>98239671
When you're born iberian you probably feel a greater than average need to prove you're not brown.
>>
>>98238181 rubbing alcohol + brush conditioner + rolling into a tip when you're done. You're welcome.
>>
>>98239720
Metallic smoothness increases based on their coverage. Thin layers of metallics actually look rougher than thicker ones. You really don't need to thin metallics all that much, if at all.
ProAcryl paints in general also don't need much thinning.
I would suggest thinning them LESS, and just trying to apply smoother coats. (or use an airbrush).
I usually use 2 or 3 barely thinned layers to achieve a good finish. More if I'm airbrushing.
>>
>>98239791(me)
>>98239720
Metallic paints are also highly translucent because of how the flakes rest in the medium, the undercoat is EXTREMELY important to achieving a perfect finish. (you can actually experiment with differently coloured undercoats to change how the metallics look)
>>
>>98239791
Oh yeah I've been using these bad boys mostly unthinned, I was just wondering if it was my tismonaut brain overthinking it since it happens regardless- it mostly happens with warm metallics too, which is why I've been slowly coming around to the idea it is in fact a figment of my brain worms. >I genuinely find it funny that people think I just basecoat my models and call them done
Because the differences in shades on your models seem to be so subtle they barely register as having any variation or depth. The basic principle to making your minis look interesting is exaggerating the contrast and there's almost none of that on your models. This is not meant to be an insult in any way but if you really do as many steps as you claim the results are vastly underwhelming for the effort you put in. To be fair though it might be because of the pictures, try taking them with light coming from the front instead of top like you seem to be doing right now.

No, you're the one making the absurd statement that your gaming group is majority black and all the best painters are black, let's see some fucking proof of this or let's see you admit you're just making the gayest fucking virtue signaling attempt of all time.

White taklon synthetics are softer than golden taklon and hold paint better while not being too expensive. Also really good for pinlining, script/liner brush pic related has a sharp tip to be accurate with a big belly to hold a lot of the wash so you can touch a recess and fill it with wash once so you don't need to go back multiple times risking hitting other parts of the model.
>>
>>98240021
>the absurd statement that your gaming group is majority black
He didn't say this at all, you got reading problems. Since this is an anonymous board where virtue signaling is pointless, have you considered that he just happens to have some blacks in his group that are decent painters? Not all black people are hoodlums.
>>
>>98240021
Sigh...
I said that some of the best painters in my group are black, in response to an absurd statement that black people do not paint. No, I'm not going to dox my friends. You can believe whatever you want my guy, it was a mistake to engage with what is either, in hindsight, a troll or an irrecoverable retard
>>

>>

>>98240032
>best painters (plural)
If you think about it this means anon is claiming to have at leaat 3 blacks in his wargaming group, 2 to be "some of the best" in the groyp and at least one more tgat doesn't qualify or the statement would have been some variation of
>all the blacks in my group are among our best painters
instead, so anons wargaming groyp is supposedly very big (20 or more and is somewhere like chicago or detroit to make 3 blacks not a statistical absurdity) or is just anon and 3 black guys.
>>98240034
But of course, because a claim like that will NEVER EVER be accompanied by proof.
Totally for doxxing reasons of course, no one has ever figured out how to post pictures of gaming groups that don't dox, how is that even physically possible?!

>>
>>98240061
No one is asking why, everyone here but you understands why, what's happening here is that proof is being demanded.
If you said your gaming group included bikini models, siamese twins or a bipedal cat you would be met with equal incredulity and a like demand for proof.
If you can't or won't then there was no point to making the statement at all, except to virtue signal.

What is absurd about that? The vast majority of blacks (in western countries) are not into nerd shit. And of those that are nerds, the majority is not into mini painting. That's why you don't see black golden demon winners, you don't see black miniature channels on YouTube etc etc.
And yes, there are always exceptions, and you might even know one or two in person, but in general terms: black people don't paint.

Minis, lads. Minis! Fascinating as this exchange surely is.

Will this work? I was advised not to undercoat in black, but I gave this badboy a heavy drybrush, kind of a pre shading. But will it even work? I tried something similar by spraying one side of thos lizardmen black and the other grey. Did not work.

>No this is not a speedpaint job I am trying to git gud so I can paint my Slaan.
Oh, I wouldn't bother with underpainting then. If you want bright colors I'd just go with white primer. If you want to improve from where you are, I would try volumetric highlights. Put a lamp on the model, take a picture, and replicate the locations of the highlights on the scales through drybrushing. Later on you can paint them in as the next step.
A matte varnish would probably help, the glossy finish makes your models look a little toy-like.
>>
>>98240432
I look at it this way: Regardless which space you hang out in, there will be (with varying frequency) posts that subtly test the waters as to your political tolerances.
So why not pick the place where those posts will align with you rather than the one where they will oppose you?
The third position here is that you may not like the leaning of things here, but you recognize that a tyrannical forum that outright forbids a given half of the political spectrum and actively penalizes it, creates a more disagreeable space than one which is hit-or-miss and inconsistent at best, but in that case you chose the "freedom of expression" place and have no excuse to bitch about it.
