The back!
>>98367396bunda
>>98367396Nice work, man! How many hours did she take to paint?
>>98367472Around eight hours
what color for the oni ninja
>>98367506Brown skin would contrast well with the colours you already have on the model.
>>98367396nice
>>98367396I like the base there. I feel like it's a necessity to do something like that with the witch elves, or else the tactical rock they've had slapped on them makes them look too samey.
>>98367506Purple.
>>98367396I'm not happy to tell you this, but you've got some ass lumps
>>98367857Cellulite
Finished another kroot. Realized that I have quite a shitload of other stuff that needs painting so Im trying to do at least one kroot a day so I can get to stuff like my sentinels and leman russ.
>>98367857>ass lumps*brap schizo flashbacks*Oh no, oh nononono, oh god no
Finally happy with a camo pattern.
Further progress on my Baneblade.
Sorry for the really poor picture quality.I was having a really difficult time getting all these minis in focus and just gave up.Squad is finished. Part of me wishes I didn't go with the pink robes with the Repentia but I did a lot of stuff that was outside of my comfort zone with this and am happy with how much I learned.
>>98368284
>>98368289Saved, thank you.I haven't put enough effort into learning how to take pictures. I foolishly thought just getting a good back drop and light would be enough but clearly that's not the case.I also need to get a stabilizer for my phone and learn what these settings do.
>>98368304Good light and fixed camera is 80% of the workYou are not going to get that many models in focus in one shot with a phone camera or most other cameras without losing (a lot of) resolution, for something like that you need focus stacking
>>98367396did u greenstuff her ass?
>>98368482Good to know. I can't see myself ever getting fancy camera just to take pictures of larger groups of minis.I just ordered a stabilizer and am going to put in the work.
>>98368200What chapter do you play? What did you use around the gun?
>>98368284these give me slaanesh cultist vibes with that scheme
Just finished assembling and priming my next project.>>98368518I've been told that before and I can see it. And the exposed thighs aren't beating the allegations. I knew I wanted violet armor but initially I had planned to paint the robes burgundy. But the more I painted the more I kept pushing pink. I'm happier with the result.
>>98368544Forgot pic
>>98367269
>>98368112>>98368112I like the colours and it's very smooth. You might want something to make the shadows deeper so the highlights can pop.
do you ever start blocking out colors and look at the pile of minis and think to yourself "what a pile of shit"like, i've painted good shit before, but goddamn
>>98368587No.

A Martian? I'm not sure what this dude is, but I like em
I really want to get these guys painted by the end of the month
>>98369184Aw man, I gotta say, the parts quality is really not that good. It is a bootleg, sure, but the last two bootlegs before it were so damn good, they were virtually identical to the original Bandai models. But that one's really rough, if you nip it you get those really chewed up looking white spots where you disconnected it from the sprue, I really believe it is low quality plastic, because with the Tamiya tank I build before that, it looked hella clean. Also, it has a lot of hair thin plastic strips overhanging, like the stuff between the two molds when they are pressed together got stuck on the sprues. I don't think I'll be able to make him look clean, but this might be the starting point of me using those little files on the parts (I got one as a freebie like 2 years ago and it's still in its wrapper)
>>98369785>chewed up looking white spots>thin plastic strips overhangingso like a Carnifex then.
>>98369807You see how rough it looks? It doesn't give you a satisfying *snap*, it just kinda rips off.Compare that to...
>>98369828this Tamiya tank I finished. You barely even see the nubs, they are even the same color as the tank.
>>98369828Look at the hand, even the fit of the hand looks bad!Alright, this has to be a sign for me to start with things like filing down and filling and all that special stuff.
>>98369828that's fuckin' gawbidge!it's just really shitty plastic, dollar store toy quality>>98369835is this post-filing? are they both post-filing?
>>98369171has anyone tried the fusion firm one? I haven't myself but shilltube made it look good.
>>98369854>No, with both I just clipped the nubs away and made it flush with a knife. No post-processing whatsoever. I am no expert, but I really believe the bootleg is just lower quality plastic. The one I had before that was fantastic, I did not know that quality varied so much, especially since they both cost the same and were from the same vendor too.
>>98369897I don't know how much of that is the plastic and how much is technique, but the tamiya is clean as hell. Citadel, especially older casts, trend a little more towards >>98369828I was only half joking about the Carnifex, there was mold slippage on some of the sprues and the shell plates didn't all line up right.
>accidentally grab one of my good kolinsky brushes instead of a synthetic one and dip it in oil paintguess I have one less good kolinsky brush now
>>98370005oil paint is for canvas where it needs to remain workable for weeks, months or years.
>>98369982>I was only half joking about the Carnifex, there was mold slippage on some of the sprues and the shell plates didn't all line up right. Thanks for clarifying, I genuinely did not catch that reference, haha. I thought it was some other model company known for shoddy quality.
>>98370005Blu tack the handle to a cup filled with lukewarm soapy water for like a day for the hair to soak in, it's fine
>>98370121thanks, gonna try that
>>98369530what's worng with old memes
What level painter do you consider yourself?I like to think myself as "almost competent">cant do pupils>just dot with white and call it a day>friends think its a stylistic choice to make them look spooky>run with it
Is this based on Castellan or Deathworld Green? Also what yellow would this be?
>>98370260I think any camo green would work but the highlights look like deathworld forest and the yellow is a cream
>>98370264>yellow is a creamThe yellowish highlights on the green? I would guess ice yellow. But I was actually asking about the yellow stripe on his helmet.
>>98370273oh no clue, maybe pro acyrl golden yellow?Remember that exact recipes only really matter for consistance in an army but if you want to ape a scheme you really just need the basicsLike this guy is a camo green with a stripe of a bright yellow. From there you can work with a number of paints and mixes there off
>>98370273pro acryl golden yellow or orange brown (it's really more an ochre)averland sunset would be good, even vallejo game gold yellow would be okay but it has the worst coverage ever seen
Finished my stormvermin test models - what do you lot think?
>>98370296Looks good. I like the rustReal question is, is your process fast/easy enough so that you can paint hordes of the little fuckers without wanting to kill yourself?
>>98370259I would say intermediate at best. I have been painting since 2016 but have only been painting Blood Angels and Sisters. Professional to me is like Golden Demon and Crystal Brush finalists.
>>98370296oh and for your basing, maybe cooler colors to contrast all the warmth of your army scheme?
>>98370296Looks really good. And in a horde rhey would look way better.
>>98370259Mid - I can make them look effective at distance/in groups, but they wilt up close.
>>98370280>>98370289For the recesses would you black line, nuln shade oil, or athonian camo shade?I'm looking to paint about 1000 points of tau in this scheme, so I don't want to make the scheme too complex.
>>98370357For tau? I'd use enamel panel liner to pin wash. Shit is better than streaking grim imo, especially if you want a clean look
>>98370259That is average tabletop level, be kind to yourself. In fact most people on wip paint at a decent tabletop ready level which is good. I don't remember very bad minis being posted here at all, save for a couple maybe but that was a bit ago.
>>98370310So I did four of them across four sessions of roughly two hours each. This is firmly in 'not great, not terrible' territory for me (plus I was experimenting / doing the first run). I need 28 of these fuckers so wish me luck. >>98370313What would you suggest? The basing here is just Geek Gaming Scenics (or whatever they are called) mix + wash, which is roughly consistent with the colour tone of the rest of my army. That said, basing is, I think, my absolute weakest area as a painter and I really want to up my game.>>98370337Thanks - here's the lot of them so far all together.
>>98370399orange is warm, you could easily do green grass or just grey mud and green warpstones?
>get perfect lettering on script>do my usual wash>it pools much heavier than usual and obfuscates it allwell fuck me guess I get to do it again
>>98370470Did you not monitor the wash as it dried? You can wipe the brush on paper and then use it to wick up excess wash or push it away from flat areas. You can also use a wet brush to dilute and clean away washes before they've dried.
>>98370499Not this time since I'd done it over the other like bits and it was behaving like normalcomplacency fucked me
>>98370259I've been painting for about two years and I'm lowkirkenuinely (lowkey + kirk + genuinely) still at a skill level, where I call myself a beginner. Some minis are better than others but even my very best one is a really barebones.
>>98370259I use basic techniques, but I have good brush control. I wouldn't call myself anything higher than intermediate. I have been dabbling in painting busts to practice volumetric highlights and glazing.
Worst part of starting space marines is def having to paint faces, but a bit of cleanup, maybe another couple black glaze layers on the hair, and finishing the armor collar then he's ready to lead my intercessors
A new guy i finished up as well, what do you guys think?
And the cape
>>98370259Great for an amateur. Reminder that every single finished model posted in this thread is better than 90% of the models I see on the table, and I don't mean that those I play games with aren't doing good enough. It's easy to get a skewed perspective when just the combined courage and interest to actually post photos online creates such a massive filter for what you'll actually see when browsing.>>98370710Just liking the way marine helmets look and therefore always going with one is a good way to avoid painting marine faces forever. Truly a big forehead (that I don't have to paint) choice.
>>98370951Thanks Doc.
>>98370977?
>>98370259your paint looks messy. learn how to paint smoothly and it will look way better and everyone will think you're an expert.
>>98370259I think I'm pretty good at painting when I plan ahead, focus and don't rush. I just don't do all three of those things at once very often.
What's the best paint for a poorfag? My brother got me a box of models and I thought there would be some kind of decent starter set for paints somewhere but they're all like 100$, am I missing something?Should I just be deciding what colors i need and buy singulars? Is that the play?
How small do chaos raptors look next to the newer chaos kits
>>98371156Yeah, you defo don't need to shell out for a paint set. What kind of models are they? Also do you own the right tools to build them?
>>98367396Crop your fucking pics for fucks sake
So I have watched enough videos on regular painting but the one thing I am still not too sure of is priming. It seems by far the best option is using an air brush ? Not only terms of getting a fine, light spray to cover everything but also in terms of cost after you have painted a few sets but there is the up front cost to even try it out. It seems like spray cans are most popular but a horrible value proposition ? $15-20 a can for hobby paint and you are going to be wasting most of it spraying it in the air.So what about brush on priming ? Is it always just shit quality or it just takes more time to do ?
>>98371325Brush on usually uses the same stuff uses for airbrush and for the most part is acceptable to use. I recommend using a make up brush. The advantage the other two have is being able to do smooth gradient zenithals but that's not a hard requirement; you can also drybrush with a lighter color but it won't be as silky smooth.
>>98371325A full airbrushing setup costs hundreds of dollars, it only makes sense if you're going to be painting thousands of dollars worth of models with it. Beginners should start with rattlecan primer, one can should easily handle your first couple squads. Brush on priming takes forever, looks shit, and isn't all that much cheaper compared to rattlecan because you use more paint per model. Don't brush prime. >inb4 some brushprime autist jumps into the conversation
>>98371325Don't invest in an airbrush until you've done a bit of painting and know it's something you wanna do long term. Unless you're wealthy, then who cares.Cans are expensive long term, but you should find out if there is a long term.Brush on isn't great, but people are dramatic about how bad it is.
>>98371325To add to what the others say, some miniatures you shouldn't use spraycan with. So far it's Reaper Bones (the soft bendy white models) that has this issue. I generally avoid them since I like their gray ones more anyway.
>>98371156Craft paint, delta ceramcoat or decoart americana
>>98369731>A Martian? That sounds right. It also reminds me of the Ul-Mor from Star Frontiers, but I think they were inspired by octopoid Martians.
>>98371156I would just buy some singular, but the paint should last quite a while so the 100 isn't too bad
Getting closer to finishing this oneStill suck shit at freehanding
Post your best setup.Livin' the dream.
>>98370259Remedial. But I'll also past the point of caring to improve.
>>98368284How the fuck do people paint those belt buckles so cleanly
>>98371929Good lighting, fine fine brushes, and a lot patience/practice
>>98371929
>>98371908If you can't afford a table you can't afford to be into painting miniatures. You're probably too young to know this but dumbasses used to buy warhammer and short their rent and bills, don't be that guy, your minis go into the trash when you become homeless.
>>98371964I can afford a table, this is a temporary setup lmao. I'm not a beginner.
>>98371325Rattlecan is never going to give you as fine a finish as an airbrush, and if what you want to spray isn't available in a rattlecan then it's airbrush or get fucked. Also it's summer in the northern hemisphere so the spraylets crying about not being able to prime due to weather are currently quiet, but give them a few months and they'll start bitching about the humidity again. The weather doesn't matter with an airbrush. Hot outside? Shoot. Cold outside? Shoot. Raining outside? Shoot. Plague of locusts outside? Shoot. In the words of Duane Johnson, it doesn't matter.>>98371366>airbrushing setup costs hundreds of dollarHoly fuck do I hate this argument. If you're into this hobby at all you're going to drop $50 per squad of plastic army men and $5-10 per tiny bottle of overpriced paint to color them with, and let's not get started on the brushes. If you're looking to save money, you'll instead drop $300 on a 3D printer, $30 per bottle of resin to fill it, and you'll only be paying $10 per slightly bigger bottle of artist paint that's a bit better than the model shit and lacks the nerd tax but it's still not cheap. You'll gladly do all of this, but dropping $300 for a good (not shitty, not adequate, but good) paintbrush that will last you the rest of your life and a low noise Harbor Freight air compressor in order to improve your experience, make things go quicker, give you access to new techniques, and allow your priming and clear coating to be independent of the climate is just a bridge too far apparently. You people confuse the shit out of me sometimes.
>>98371366My dad already has an air compressor in his shop. There is a highly rated beginners air brush on amazon for $40 and I would just need a regulator and moisture filter so for less than the price of 3 hobby cans I would have a working setup.
>>98371982>you're already spending hundreds of dollars, so why not spend hundreds more?I own an airbrush, I love it, but beginners shouldn't be buying airbrushes. It saves you money in the long term, but most new painters will paint one or two squads and never pick up a brush again, they should be trying to save every dollar. Holy fuck.
>>98371999Good for you, I also got a $300+ compressor for free when I started airbrushing.
>>98371964whabang
>>98371982Nobody needs an airbrush right from the start
>>98370259Good enough but improving. I recently learned to do eyes which I wasn't able to do previously.
>>98370944Color scheme and tone works really well for the old school model vibe. Is the base like an ash wastes or underground or other?
>>98370259I'd say I'm pretty good, but I have a very unique style and not everyone can appreciate it.
>>98372050>4chan filenamefuck off shitposter
>>98372042Thanks! The base is set for a blighted ash lands
>>98372028eyes are a lot of fun once you get around to learning them
>>9837201this is supposed to be a hobby, not an obsession, put your toys away and unpack your belongings, dumbass.
>>98372136meant for >>98372017
>>98372137>>98372136Can't, I'm staying with extended family for a bit while I'm between houses. Most of my shit is in storage until I move into the new place. I gotta paint up these rats before my next Blood Bowl season starts.
>tfw my gf not-so-subtly asks what kind of brands and models I like a month before my birthday
>>98372103>paint eyes first and then clean it up later when finishing the rest of the faceFuck, why haven't I thought of that
>>98372264Jelly. Do you know if she knows that you know?
>>98371156Yes, deciding on colors and buying singulars is 100% the play. If you insist on a set there's an AK interactive "basic starter set" for like 40$ but singles are the best option
>>98371908My back hurts just looking at this
Finish line in sight. Made the base in a rush cos I kept rubbing edge highlights off with fat fingers.
I heated up and cold plunged this bone naga a bunch of times to make the head stand taller but its sinking down again. It was an inch or more higher and closer to the base. I gave up and painted it, but maybe someone knows another way to make it stand up the way I want so it towers over the death knight I kitbashed onto the base?
>>98372272I don't think so, because she thinks I'm thick-headed, which I am, but she is really not smooth with it lol.
What colors do I need for proper gold when painting nonmetalic gold? I use gold and a dark almost plum or burgundy for my models and I wanna try my hand at NMM though I notice alot of tutorials they end up looking more brass to my eyes. Thanks.
>>98372510Usually you're mixing but a green-brown, gold-brown peanut butter type color, a proper warm yellow, ice yellow and some greens and purples for glazes can be useful depending on the type of gold.
>>98367396Nice
>>98372584ew, sloppa
>>98372584bro is having the time of his life lmao
>98372584kys
>>98370259usually i dont bother to paint anything special or even to my own standard but i can still surprise myself if i tryi never really had the magic and inspiration of discovering new terchiques or honing my art so i think im in a pretty good place
>>98372348DYB
>>98372103>try this>cant make both eyes look more or less the same after a gazillion attemptsI might just make the mini one eyed at this point
>>98372740And the worst part>the paint is now so thick it's creating noticeable texture on the eyes>forced to either remove paint or suck it up
>>98371929Thin brush and yeah, >>98371952 what this anon posted. Sometimes it helps if you base coat the leather first, then paint the buckle, then highlight the leather. That's so you can clean up any spill over you may have caused while painting the buckle.>>98372028Eyes and faces are a real pain at the start. The best way to go about it when first starting out is to already accept it's going to not look great and be willing to laugh about whatever monstrosity you are about to paint. It's not about looking good at that stage, it's about practicing and learning. A magnifying lamp really helped me at the start but i tried to use it more as a tool to compare how a mini would look under magnification vs a foot away from your eyes. Unless you are painting for tournaments, you are wasting a lot of time and effort putting in a lot of detail into something people would only see once under a lense. With enough practice you will be able to paint them without needing one.>>98372348Nice job with the teeth and jaw in the helmet. Latex gloves can help prevent chipping the paint or just save painting those areas that are prone to chipping for the end.
>>98367915rly cool anon i love kroots.
>>98372740Yeah right eye will look amazing but the left is always wonky. It is a wall that takes awhile to pass. >>98372753If you know you want the head to stand out I find it helps to paint the head separate and to only do a base coat for the skin and to shade just around the eyes at the start. Do the eyes first before the rest of the face just incase you do end up putting on too much paint and need to reset. Less painful that way.
Trying to adapt lava sword method to make a force sword for my librarian. I'm undecided if I like it or not yet. Im going to print out another one with some runes I can paint in a much lighter stronger blue, I think that will help to give the impression of power, pysker glowy sorcerer sword.
>>98372803The left blade looks better, not because of the choice of color, but because the "heat" of the blade starts at the spine and radiates out, while the right is just sort of frosted with it.Runes will be a better foundation I think, you can have your blue energy focused on the runes and radiating out from them.
>>98372803Left looks better. I feel for the right you need what you have now to be more on the edges on those panels where they slope to the blade (not sure what its called). For the flat areas on the front I would try no black at all and just go a pure blue as the base with purple as the shading for cooler spots and white for the hottest.
>>98372820>>98372845thank you for the feedbackIll post the new blade in a while
>>98372803it looks like a frost blade
>>98372803Right mostly ends up looking like lichen.
