A place for discussion of pre-WotC D&D, OSR retroclones, and OSR-adjacent games.

>Is this a general?
No, just a place to discuss OSR and related content.
>Isn't there an OSR thread already?
No, the current regulars of /osrg/ have made it clear they only want to see a narrow subset of OSR games in the thread.
This means the name /osrg/ is somewhat misleading, but that's their problem.
Please report and ignore any trolling.

Night Below is fantastic. I don't really love the later parts, but it starts off strong.

My favorite might have to be White Plume Mountain. It's hypocritical for me to say that, because it generally goes completely against my entire design philosophy by being such an inorganic dungeon, but I had a lot of fun playing it and a lot of fun running it and sometimes fun is more important than lofty design goals.

I actually don't really like funhouse dungeons. I prefer more grounded adventures with logical construction throughout, with Horror on the Hill coming to mind as an example of just about as close to a perfect archtypical adventure as they come.

The problem is that archtypical adventures don't stand out, weird ones do. White Plume Mountain can be frustrating and nonsensical, but it's so memorable because it's just so strange and its set pieces just stand out so much. The best source for making a funhouse adventure is probably just to read through as many adventures as you can, pick and choose the pieces you think are best or stand out, and slap them together with no logic beyond "I'll say a wizard did it."

I rarely get to use miniatures anymore because I play online most of the time now, and that's a real shame because I inherited a huge amount of them from a few friends so I have a whole bookcase stocked with them.

That's how you end up with greatly increasing your chances of a player having already encountered a puzzle before.

If i was to use minis i'd use these adorable little guys called "peeples" (plastic versions of wooden meeple game pieces) They're great because you can blu tack lego hats/helmets onto them for easy characterization (wizard hats, fighter helms thief hoods, cleric hats helms)

I unironically use meeples. They are cheap, they are compact, every player gets a different colour, it's surprisingly effective.
>>
>>98536283
I use pogs. Not actual pogs, but just pieces of 1 inch cardboard I punch out using a scrap-booking Circle Punch.

I used to print out pictures and glue them on, but I ended up switching to just directly doodling on them, and players also enjoy making their own. For added weight to prevent them from being moved erroneously, I'd just glue a penny underneath any PCs or other important characters.

Similar thing happened with me running spelljammer for the first time.

Everyone wanted to play one of the new races. Half wanted to play dracons. I didn't really understand that. I get the idea that they're supposed to be cool, but I wouldn't want to actually play as one. The whole campaign felt weird to me because the dracon players immediately bonded and made an in-group within the party, and that brought a lot of uncomfortable tension.

Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth.
The art and the subject matter was a really visceral experience for me in my late teens. It has a map that is almost impossible to map through description. It has exotic creatures, and really weird encounters. It intimidated the players. It had a "reveal" at the end that was memorable, and it told a great backstory about Iggwilv. So, it really captured my imagination in how storytelling could be interactive.
>Funhouse dungeons
There was an issue of Dungeon magazine that had one. It was a mansion of some wizard that every room and encounter was something strange, with a sinister undercurrent. All I can really remember of it is a wandering monster duo of a doppleganger and a mimic that wasn't a threat to the party, but would follow them around and mimic things, messing with them. It's a trope I have reused many times, like C3PO and R2D2 in a fantasy setting.

I need noob dm help. I was playing canasta with my 69yo mother who expressed an interest in trying to play dnd because she is sick of playing solitare on the computer by herself all the time and I am keen to try learn her thinkin like, she dun need to know the rules if I am in charge and I play solo so I can handle a single character and shit but how do you introduce a new elderly mother to playing something that isn't card game on the computer? how do i explain what is expected of her as far as playing a character and shit go? this all started because i started rolling dice to decide which cards to discard in canasta. I'll handwave a bunch of shit like encumbrance and stuff just how do I splain to her what shes sposed to be doing?

Explain it to your mum in the sense of it's like a Radio show or a game of makebelieve like the way kids do but euth more rules. Has she read LOTR? make a comparison to that if so. If she has some friends invite them too. Could be fun!

I told her its story telling without winning or anything. my little sister who has always not wanted to play suddenly sounds interested in helping make mum play lol. she reads some fantasy stuff, I guess I need to just sort of explain that you are a character that does stuff..

I think most intro adventures do a good job of teaching new players the game. I'd actually take a look at how Tomb of the Serpent Kings tries to do things, because it tries to do this whole thing where you learn lessons as you play. I wouldn't exactly recommend Tomb of the Serpent Kings, but it illustrates what a beginner adventure should be trying to do, even if the details should probably be adjusted to whoever you happen to be running the game for.

Gygax used to do this little demo where he would ask people, "There's a short tunnel, and at the end of it is a bag full of unclaimed gold. The only thing stopping you is a big, green orc. What do you do?" and it would instantly start up a game.

I do a similar thing, but I do it for normies:
"Imagine that all the power went out, and society collapsed. However, you and your loved ones build a little settlement where you are surviving- No, thriving! You all have shelter and a little farm, and over time, your neighbors and even strangers have come to join your little town. In this time, people have come to you so often for help that you have been basically made one of the leaders of this little settlement. For a time, everything is going well. Then... One day, someone close to you is sick. They are coughing and have some sort of infection. If something isn't done quick, they could very well pass away.
Just when you think all hope is lost, one of the people in your settlement comes to you and tells you that while they were out, they saw a shed a few miles up the road that was being guarded. They snuck a peek at the contents while the guard was away. Inside, several boxes of canned food and survival equipment, but most importantly there was a large box of medication and medical supplies. You have a four-wheeler, an old rifle and some ammo, and a bottle of water. You ride out there, just to scope the situation out. You see that the shed is being guarded by a young man who isn't paying attention. He's got a rifle slung over his shoulder and he's trying to light a cigarette...
What would you do?"

My parents both recently retired and I thought about introducing them to some games they could play with each other and their friends since they have a lot more free time now, and I debated over introducing them to D&D.

In the end, I decided against introducing them to any RPGs, because even after several decades of me playing the game and having explained on multiple occasions how it works, any time my dad asked me what I've been up and I told him D&D, he'd ask me if I had won.

I introduced them to a bunch of board games instead, and after a few misses they found a rotation of a few they really liked. Not saying you should follow in the same path, especially cuz your mom specifically asked about D&D, but it's not bad to consider all the hobby options. She might even be more interested in a more modern style of RPG.

Get her into some WoD games, and she'll be playing kinky bondage vampires over the internet with strangers.

Hommlet is unironically played best by a group of murder hobos, systematically killling everyone they meet and scouring each house for anything with a GP value.

But most groups will just play a fairly straightforward adventure where the village is boring and things don't get exciting until the moat house.

POLONIUS: This business is well ended.
My liege, and madam, to expostulate

Hommlet is one of those modules that does one specific thing extremely well, and it's being a one-stop shop for getting a campaign started: out of the box you get 7 pages of maps and a fully-statted out village with NPCs including a druid grove, a wizard tower, an inn, an adventure goods store, an adventurer-friendly church, a guard tower, and a two-level dungeon (the Moathouse) that rewards patience and punishes haste and is designed to get the village and the adventurers into conflict with a larger group just as it's winding up. That's more than enough to kick off a full campaign on zero notice.

Its original design was to give new players a sort of tutorial mode and then a home base for them to use through T2-T4, but publishing concerns got in the way. I personally don't like T2-T4, but some people really love it so mileage clearly varies.

If you wish the Keep on the Borderlands was the Town on the Borderlands, Hommlet's probably your best pick. If you're selecting something for your players to actively do, steer clear. The Moathouse is absolutely brutal when rushed but won't appeal to mid-characters and the town itself isn't built to be adventured in, save the village, it's constituent pieces, and the dungeon as drop-in locations for elsewhere.

Keep is better for military themed games, if you want the players to either lack a village or have to start one themselves, or if you're not expecting them to stick around long.

There was a time when it was okay to have a blog, because the technology to have a blog was relatively fresh and people were exploring what could be done on a blog or with a blog.

But, when people realized that blogs were predominantly self-published navel-gazing, the only people who'd cling to that format are the kind of people who struggle with change of any kind.

Some blogs are okay. People like David Perry or Ben Milton approach OSR with a sense of exploration that's pretty important, and seem genuinely interested in what other people think which is what typically seperates the good bloggers from the bad.

So uh, I don't want to kick up a shitstorm but why does the /osrg/ not consider 2e ''osr''?
>>
>>98580900
It's laid out in their n00b guides, hence the constant rectum ravaging about how they're "propaganda" and shit.
Basically, starting around 1984 there was a culture shift within TSR, moving towards D&D as an engine for "epic storytelling" and away from the dungeon-crawling sword-and-sorcery focus of Arneson and Gygax. This shift is referred to as the "new school."
This shift resulted in an explosion of railroad modules and bad advice, and the commercial success of Dragonlance fed into it, and in 1999 this all made its way into the rulebooks in 2e.

You mean inaccurately and insanely. How you managed to come up with such inane bullshit just to try and shift the demarcation from 3e to 2e is beyond me.

>This shift is referred to as the "new school."

No one in the world actually refers to that as the new school. No one even actually says "new school".

"Old school" refers to how D&D was built on an old 1970's era chassis and felt dated in comparison to "modern" RPGs, like 1991's Vampire the Masquerade. Even 2e was being called "old school" because it wasn't much of a significant change or update from 1e. 3e, being made by WotC in an effort to revitalize the brand and embracing mechanics like a universal resolution mechanic marks when D&D transitioned into a more modern game.

This was the common parlance and understanding, and you can even find examples of people discussing this in letters to Dragon magazine.

Notice how you need to strawman with "isn't any different" as opposed to "wasn't much of a significant change or update"? That's a pretty significant distinction.
Also, the guy is explicitly calling 2e old school and even doing you a favor by explaining what he means by it in case some chucklefuck retard had trouble understanding what "old school" meant.

A 2000 letter to the editor using the common parlance understood at the time, RIGHT at the turn where the OSR began. He's using "old school" in the way people understood.

Around 2002, 3e had already been out long enough that the drought of all pre-3e material lead people to start discussing a "revival" on forums like Dragonsfoot, with 2003 even presenting the first use of the phrase "old school revival", which culminated in projects like C&C in 2004 and then OSRIC in 2006. It's a pretty straightforward timeline, with no huge gaps, and supported by a direct explanation of this being how things went down by people like Matt Finch who worked on C&C and co-authored OSRIC.

There's no mental gymnastics required, no gap of a decade of inactivity, just a straightforward sequence of events that follow a clear, logical path and even include firsthand accounts and full explanations from direct sources.

It's not?
He's using it in essentially the same way Finch does it. How most people in the OSR use it.

You're just weirdly aiming for mindless denial, despite even Matt Finch's 2008 OSR Primer saying the same about the OSR being in response to modern editions, defined as 3e and on. His 2024 isn't revisionist at all, you're just mad that he explicitly says 2e is old school in a way you have no way to misinterpret.

We're now talking about the 2008 primer that even Simulacrum points at being the start of distilling a set of core principles for the OSR, and Finch goes at length about explaining the differences between "modern" (at the time, 3e and 4e) editions and "old school" (all previous editions) in case some idiot couldn't understand that nearly 20 years later.

Let me ask you this seriously: do you actually think that if you just lie in enough volume it's going to get you back into /osrg/ somehow? Are you some kind of retarded Goebbels?
>>
>>98584832
>>still tries to cite a guy who called him a retard to his face
You mean a guy who got so flustered about his own propaganda piece being demonstrated to contain unresolvable paradoxes because he can't stick to the actual facts while also pushing his anti-2e nonsense that he stupidly decided to reveal just how tiny your little echo chamber is that you have to try and use yourselves as sources?

Remember, no one brought up Simulacrum (or would, because he's not exactly considered a credible source and even the people who read his blog posted about how he's wrong) until this idiot.
https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/98426331/#q98456450
Which makes his statement about it being "clear, definitive and offsite" all that much funnier because while it was obvious the first two were wrong, Sim himself made it objectively clear that it was actually 0/3.

>Let me ask you this seriously: do you actually think that if you just lie in enough volume it's going to get you back into /osrg/ somehow?
That's some incredible hypocritical irony. Not only are you the liar (and one that can be demonstrated as such with a mountain of evidence), you're the one who keeps coming here and trying to act like you don't have to put on sad puppet shows in your thread.

You mean a straightforward sequence of events that follow a clear, logical path and even includes firsthand accounts and full explanations from direct sources, all of which is independently verifiable and literally has the people who worked on these games telling you why they made them. For fuck's sake.

On the other hand, all you have is a completely nonsensical story about how the OSR is actually a reaction to 2e, despite the OSR beginning more than a decade after 2e's release, and all just because you are doing that weird thing the worst grogs do.

On one hand, we've got Sim marking Finch's 2008 primer as an important OSR document, while you're doing your best to pretend no one cared about it or just openly lying that it doesn't say what it says.
On one hand, we've got Sim even including 2e retroclones as part of the OSR, while you're hoping to say that the original 2e wouldn't be included in the OSR.
Those are paradoxes you haven't resolved.

The most you've ever done is say "Well, I don't think it's OSR and a handful of faglord idiots may have also said as such" and that's fine. People are allowed to have different ideas of what the OSR is. The problem is that you want to try and dictate not just what the OSR should be, but what it was, even in the face of objective evidence that completely destroys your entire argument that 2e was never considered OSR by the OSR community.
>>

Yes, I saw your rambling nonsense, it still doesn't say "this is an important OSR document" it lists examples of "true retroclones" that were being released at the time. The idea that this is naming FG&G as an "important OSR document" and therefore there's some kind of "paradox" happening in the text is all the result of your overworked imagination.
Maybe if you played games, you'd have a healthier outlet for all that than wasting your life on this kind of nonsense.
>>
>>98584953
>>98585054
>You mean [absolutely deranged schizobabble]?
No, I mean what I said, actually, not your totally unhinged confabulations.

How are you like this, though? What narcissistic injury compels you to write massive text walls of lies at people who know you're lying and have nothing but contempt for you? In a thread which you have to be aware on some level is nothing but a zoo for people to point and laugh at you when you do it? It's really hard to understand your mental state.
>>
>>98585331
It says Finch's Primer is the document that started the trend of a focus on distilling a set of core principles for the OSR. That sounds pretty important.

>The idea that this is naming FG&G as an "important OSR document"
No one said that. You're going to have to re-read what was said so you don't make a fool out of yourself.

>In a thread which you have to be aware on some level is nothing but a zoo for people to point and laugh at you
I understand that's the narrative you're desperate to try and put in place, all while you put so much effort into trying to make the /osrg/ not look as truly dead as it is, but from the perspective of someone who can see the other people you've been calling fishfag and just generally not having my head up my ass, I don't think you coming here and being consistently thrashed for being objectively wrong is helping your narrative in any way. You even coming here at all is another hole in your grand story.

People don't need to look far to see what kind of person you are. We have the other "open OSR" thread you've been bumping for a solid month for people to look at if they're curious what your indisputably empty bumping looks like, and it doesn't look all that different from what you post in the /osrg/, just at a slower at-total minimum frequency. You made a gamble that you could try and dictate what people could think on 4chan, drove out most of the /osrg/ posters, and now you keep running here whenever you feel lonely and depressed while never being able to admit to yourself that you are the source of all your own problems.

You're objectively wrong about 2e and OSR, as has been routinely demonstrated.
You imagine that if you just troll and shitpost like a baby, you can avoid all the facts that contradict you.
You're here because you have a habit of always doing the absolute worst move, and that move is telling everyone what story you want people to believe when you're the worst liar I've ever seen.
