I'm still chasing the biggest high I've gotten from wargaming which I got to enjoy when I first started the whole hobby, namely that we had some war vet guy print out a big laminated map of Middle Earth, had everyone pick factions/cities/forces, and basically ran a D&D-esque/Total War style campaign out of it. Lots of fun character things to do and what-not. One of these days I'll get to do it again.
>>

These guys always reminded me of the "bigger batman" meme.

Were they created to just be better versions of space marines or some shit
>>
>>98725592
They basically got turned into "bigger batman" on top of GW trying to force them into some kind of protagonist role because they're "above all the petty nonsense" of the setting or whatever. It's lame storytelling.
>>
>>98725578
>is this the new charecter they adding in the final DLC?
No, the new character is a Miraculist.
>>98725587
Owlcat has only been adding things that have a tabletop model (likely at GW's insistence), which the Bonesinger currently doesn't have.

They were originally bodyguards for officials and slowly just became the emperors finest warriors that were bound to him between editions.
Sort of like a more elite hand crafted version of the more mass-produced space marines.
>>
>Even their most ‘basic’ BATTLELINE infantry can soak up incoming weapons fire with Toughness 7 and 5 Wounds apiece, while they casually dish out the kind of close combat damage that even seasoned veterans with power fists struggle to match.
Fuck me, here I thought the shuffle might mean they'd let Marines catch up on Custards a bit and they could sit still and be content with a 'mere' 1 toughness higher than Marines, but no, god forbid gold boys don't get a buff too

That's not how GW licenses work, total war shows they can ask for any thing that's currently in production, that was once in production, portrayed in artworks, or even just described at times.

The bonesinger isn't particularly controversial for gw to greenlight.

Total War's not a good example since GW was letting CA do almost whatever they wanted since Fantasy was dead. It honestly feels like a power creep. Space Marines get their huge buff to play more ""thematically"", the other factions rightfully get pissed at this and ask what's in store for them. So Chaos, the Custodes, Eldar, so on get the buffs. It ultimately starts to feel like a treadmill where everyone gets buffed but the only thing that changes is the number of units on the table due to point increases (I've heard a rumor that they're slow dripping the point increases and it'll cap at about +30% SM wise, because the frog in a pot of water approach taken over the summer was really popular.)

I think 12 is going to be the hard reset that will have to fix where 11 is running towards. Much as I have misgivings about 11, I would honestly have it last 3-4 years than be rushed out the door for it to be a half-baked mess that has to be tweaked every 2 weeks like it's a live service game.
>>

>>
>>98725621
No, gw is making too much money to risk having the house of cards fall down by having a drastic change in rules, they'll churn out new editions with very small changes until they can do that.

If you're going to see experimentations in the rules department it will be in aos or some sidegame format, I'm betting on another attempt at apocalypse now that superheavy units are widely accepted and a few new ones may be in the pipeline, and if the rules additions in that prove popular, they'll integrate them in the main 40k rules.

Codexes are thrown out before they're even released because they're already outdated.
>>
>>98725675
Non-special boys factions are going to be so disappointed if they expect their codexes to get power crept like marines and custodes (orks were already busted). Believe GW when they say they want the elites (of all kinds) to feel more elite.
>>
>>98725705
Yup. Now even the non-hazardous profile does 2 damage and they can fire 3 times at 12".
>>
>>98725707
Very unlikely
Space Marines have historically sat at a strong but not overpowered position
I have no reason to believe that it suddenly won’t stay that way any longer
Some codexes will be stronger, some will be weaker
>>
>>98725705
Yeah I'm glad it's gone. Also makes more sense to have them in 10s now as putting them in an impulsor (firing deck 7) doesn't really save wounds from overcharging. You take bigger hazard rolls when it inevitably explodes turn 3.

Hey everyone it's once again time for the collage anchor posts.
This month's theme was "Retro" and was left to your own interpretation. Could be an old model, a super vibrant vintage scheme, a final farewell to firstborn or something else you feel fit the theme.
I'll try to post an anchor every thread but if you can't spot me write"here is my september collage submission" and it'll be way easier to find you in the archive.

Here is the link to next month's vote

I combined a few options because the list was getting pretty long, hope that's okay. Also a heads up for next month, in the spirit of the season regardless of the winner "spooky" will be an optional additional theme.

Knights against sisters at 1000 points must have sucked for the sisters player. No way he had anything that could deal with them unless he wanted half his army to be Vahl and 3 paragons. Brutal matchup.

Hoping to get a game in next week with this bad boy, just gonna sticky tack his arms on for now until I can really figure out a good pose for the axe arm. Kid starts daycare next week so I'll feel less bad about leaving the wife to care for him all day.

Ah yes, hyperbole. Because there was never any variance before. It was all T3/4 infantry for 100% of all lists. There were never armies that had tough units mixed it. The obvious solution now is to inflate toughness, especially Custodes. They need to be a slog to kill for the sake of all armies.

Force org would solve all these problems by the way

Not really hyperbole given leagues of votaan and ad mech had no choice but to play that way for 9th on top of ad mech having to jump through hoops for a bunch bonuses. Shit sucked big time.

Huron's latest novel "Blackheart: Claws of the Maelstrom" has him laughing at the Imperium cursing him for his ambitions while ignoring Roboute's 500 Worlds and making himself *regent*.

I mean....Huron has a point. Shortly after returning to the world of the living, Roboute set about restoring his old empire in Ultramar to its full glory, and not just that, he plans to massively expand it beyond its historical borders. His personal legions are forcefully assimilating Imperial worlds that attempt to resist this. All worlds folded into Ultramar are occupied by his auxiliary forces, regardless of whether they joined willingly or not, to signify their new political allegiance.

The Imperial Tithe is redirected to Macragge rather than Holy Terra. The Ordo Astartes and Hereticus have logged several suspicious behaviors of Roboute that border on Legion-building.

Yet no action has been taken... curious.

Do you guys have any rebuttal to Huron's point of view, or is he correct that the Imperials are hypocrites?

Interesting. Max squad is 3 and they will have the same amount of wounds as current 5 guys but their offense doesn't scale nearly as much, they only get 1 extra attack, they lost the wound rerolls, and they used to have sustain all the time (in melee).

Knights are an AT skew list check at every level
You just have to build your roster around only bringing AT weaponry, preferably that can also survive getting shot at (so tanks instead of things like guard heavy weapon squads).
By nature of their stats being so high, it forces you to bring a skew list purpose-made to counter them.

Fwiw, stat creep causes this on a reduced scale across the game, it's the core of the "the only reason to bring guardsmen is to capture objectives and screen for deepstrike so you only bring like 2 squads in a 2k point game" argument.

That’s literally exactly what they’re saying
>>
>>98726267
Skew goes against the spirit of wargaming. Wargaming was never about doing unintuitive or nonfluffy things for the sake of winning, it was about seeing how your dudes and your friend's dudes next battle plays out narratively. Wargaming got started as historical recreation, and then branched into it's own ruleset so it was a game as well, but even then the focus was narrative and seeing how things played out. It wasn't gamey nonsense like trying to come up with lists that your opponent can't interact with, and it certainly wasn't about bragging about it. I know I sound like an old man yelling at the clouds, but what I'm saying is all fact.

>>98726280
You don't interact. You win by sending scoring units to every objective around the board and interact with his models as little as possible, and ideally also tarpit them with some durable but you aren't trying or capable of killing anything. People will on points without killing a single model and never doing a single cool thing all game, and then say "it's not a problem, look I scored 5 more points and wrote down that I won the match". These people don't understand that 40k is about doing fun silly charges at each other and seeing what your dudes can do and seeing who the dice favors today. Those are foundations of fun wargaming and what the founders envisioned. It was not "I stood on this circle, never moved, and never fired my weapon. I won by 5 imaginary points".

I agree pretty much, only issue is that things have changed completely. 40k itself is more of a board game when it used to have one foot firmly planted in TTRPG territory. Now it's slanted heavily towards being incredibly gamey. You really just have to look at all of the dorks wearing team jerseys poring over codices for hours upon hours to wring every tiny advantage out of the rules, it's a heinous state of affairs.
>>
>>98726316

I’m going to lazy, and just repost this.

there’s lots of reasons, but the main one for me is they just have an insane amount of freedom for what you can have them be, and this comes from tone, gimmicks, and power scaling.
for the tone, there’s a sliding scale for how serious or silly they can be, so you’re completely allowed to have them be soulless 6’4 rape apes that mercilessly butcher everyone and love to torture any survivors, or you can have be goofy little guys getting up to looney toons tier hijinks, or you can have a little in between where they’re serious and murderous, but just a little slow and like to have fun a lot which adds to their humor.
then there’s the klans which give you a lot of gimmicks to choose from like barbarian hordes, dreadmobs, pirates, cyborgs, ect.
there’s another set of gimmicks for blood axes who like to larp as other militaries which is cool, and its another sliding scale between how well they perform at larping. it can be just giving them makeshift medals and titles, and calling it a day, or it can be outright military organization and ranks with proper uniforms.
finally there’s powerscaling where you’re able to justify them in any warzone. a big problem for some armies is that sometimes it doesn’t make sense for certain matchups or them to be in a certain place. GSC, Imperial Agents, Custodes, and even Marines come to mind for this. this isn’t really a problem for orks because they’re fucking everywhere, and they also are on yet another sliding scale where their depiction could be either jobber hordes that suffer insane causalities frequently even by a simple company of guardsmen, or outright able to go toe-to-toe with a company of space marines.
>>
>>98726311
That's also an option, but "score imaginary points" is the opposite of fun to me so I'd much rather actually play the game.
Knights also have plenty of anti-horde weaponry; Armiger Warglaives can wipe a 10-man guard squad in 1 attack with a melee from the chain-cleaver sweep (s8ap-2, ws 3+, 8 attacks at 1d each but gets 2 more if you charged for the full wipe), and that's before counting the attacks from their heavy stubber.

All that in a unit that costs 5 points LESS than 20 guardsmen.

Horus Heresy is for ultra competitive marine fags, It is everything wrong with modern 40k but with some extra nostalgia bait rules tacked on. Theres insane primarch faggotry in HH and balance is still fucked so most people ignore like 75% of the options in the game. For example theres basically no reason to ever take missile launchers over lascannons in a devastator squad since lascannons are way better at killing vehicles and can also be used to snipe terminators because of the all or nothing armor save system while krak missiles dont have enough AP so terminators still get the full save.

They aren't making any images or videos for custodes as a whole. And it makes sense, there's nothing for GW to release on them or any news about the faction until now.
And even the pics we did get still utilize the new custodes who are all half female half male, so no, GW isn't even hiding them.

It's one of the strength of mtg and 40k adopting a similar sideboard system would improve the game. But you get a lot of people who see anything related to card games (even though this is a concept that is not necessarily exclusive to card games) and their brain turns to mush and they lose reasoning skills.

Your list is 2000 points. Then you also have a 500 point sideboard that you can swap into your list before the match after seeing your opponent's list. It makes total sense. For most people, the vast majority of sideboards would just address skew. Which funny enough is exactly what it does for mtg. Most mtg sideboards have graveyard hate and storm hate, which are two linear strategies that take advantage of specific rules or game elements that most people aren't equipped for with an average deck.

Literally in the first image.
And we know this is a female one because female custodes models have smaller feet, narrower upper torsos and their torsos do have boob armor on them. Which this one also has.
>>
>>98726606
In this case, the issue is that the "diverse playstyhle" in question has something that many armies cannot easily deal with without heavily leaning into the units that can deal with it.

I think invalidating entire swathes of an army's armoury because it doesn't really affect their opponent is frustrating and kind of shitty. Likewise, from a knight players' perspective: wouldn't it suck to get into a match with a guy only to see him swap out a chunk of his army for units that'll ruin your day?

I don't know, seems unsatisfactory to me.

What you're proposing is to fundamentally change both horde armies and elite armies. Knights, custodes, and every faction that has the ability to field a horde would have to be changed in very fundamental ways, such as all knights being reduced in toughness and wounds across the board. You certainly could fundamentally change half the factions in the game to make it so players can't skew anymore, and a well-rounded list becomes the most sensible thing to take, but that's more work than just making a sideboard system, which would use existing models and rules. The people who play those armies and like playing big knights or like playing 80 guants would also lose something, if that's actually legitimately what a person enjoys (and they're not doing it for gameplay advantage) then I wouldn't want those people to lose something they enjoy. Fielding 80 termagaunts is a legitimate part of the game and a legitimate fantasy of the nid player because it's fluffy and thematic. They should still be able to do that. But if their opponent came prepared with a sideboard that has a bunch of flamers or blast weapons, then now both players get to have a fair match with no skew and nobody feeling bad since their army doesn't interact well before units are even deployed.

At the end of the day, that's the fundamental issue. If your army doesn't interact well with what your opponent is doing before units have even been deployed and no gameplay decisions have even been made, then that's a game design flaw. mtg addresses it with the sidebaord. 40k sort of lightly addresses it by elite armies often losing on points and objectives but that doesn't address the issue of fun gameplay and feeling like the spirit of the game is being upheld. Standing on an imaginary circle with 80 guardsmen who just die in droves without doing anything cool and no stories to tell after the game is bad, even if you win by 10 points.

I can figure out which ones are meant for which roles, but I'm not sure how I should really be building my roster around them.
This is a 245 USD tank and I'd rather not waste money building a tank that sounds really cool on-paper but is just bad in-game.
My natural inclination is the Stormsword for an actual vehicle and the Hellhammer for a "command tank" that can also carry its own weight.
The Shadowsword having ap-5 feels counter-intuitive as well because of how many things have coin-toss invuln saves.

Sideboards greatly favour armies with specialist units over armies with generalist units, and armies with large amounts of options over armies with fewer options.
This is a problem because some armies are obligated skewed lists that would need to be balanced with the idea that the enemy will always be a tailor made list to deal with them, and at the end of this arms race the generalist armies with few options fall short.
Either you make skew lists illegal, you give everyone the tools to deal with skew lists, if not through units then through purchasable bombardments and whatnot, or you rebalance the whole game around the idea of skew lists being skewed only at glance, and equally brought down by specialist equipment or generalist units played a certain way.

A sideboard also raises the cost of the game, which is a negative.

But both players can swap

Fundamentally in a game with enough different playstyles some sort of rock paper scissors effect will happen. This happens in overwatch. This happens in magic. This happens everywhere. You can't just delete all the different playstyles because that deletes a big part of the reason why people play your game in the first place. If people wanted to play a game with exactly symmetrical resources, they would play chess or counterstrike instead of magic or overwatch. In this very thread we already had someone mention how HH gameplay invalidates a lot of wargear because so many defensive profiles are the same. People WANT to have different playstyles available to them, that's why they're playing 40k and not HH or risk or something. Hence, you try to balance and moderate the worst of the bad matchups with various techniques instead of just throwing every different playstyle in the garbage. Magic does it with a sideboard, overwatch does it by letting you swap heroes.

>In this very thread we already had someone mention how HH gameplay invalidates a lot of wargear because so many defensive profiles are the same
That's because 90% of games are marines vs marines -- it's utterly pointless to bring flamers and shit the same way it's utterly pointless to bring your army's baseline weapon against a skew army like knights. It's not fun when up to half of your army is unplayable because the other army's common unit is just too tough for them.

You have to know when to put a limit on things as well: sorry, but some playstyles deserve to go to the garbage because they aren't fun and they skew the game too much.

I reiterate: knights just don't belong in the game the same way the navy doesn't belong in the game.

So your opponent using his sideboard to remove a few flamers and replace them with a few melta is totally fine, will objectively improve the experience for him, and he's just undoing the damage you did to the balance of the match so you dare not complain about your opponent having a few more meltas than he did before sideboarding because that just proves that knight players WANT to skew and gain that advantage. You are complaining about your opponent actually gaining tools to interact with your models. You should feel ashamed of yourself, and this moment should be a wakeup call for you.

>but what if my opponent sideboards in a bunch of meltas!
That's literally the point you dumb selfish fuck.

w h a t
>>
>>98726886
The post-heresy structure of the imperium was designed specifically to break the legions into small chapters, the Badab war is an example of what you're asking for "powerful fighty space marines opposing imperial tyranny" but 4000 space marines could not stand against the unified might of the imperial forces. The system is working as designed.
>theocracy
Also many chapters, notably the black templars who cheat and have 6600 space marines or the space wolves with 3300 marines, worship the emperor as a God/the All-Father rather than the logician theory.

Even science autism marines like the Iron Hands consider the emperor to be the Omnissiah, not a super tech guy.

>They're grown. They had upbringings on their planets. They just found out they had a space dad and started getting all catty over him
Lorgar got upset because dad told him he was not allowed to worship him, so he found "the real gods" and 4 new gay space dads (5 if you count vash'torr)
Angron did not need a space dad, his brain was ruined anyway, some might argue the emperor could have won him over by helping him defeat the high riders but I disagree since Angron's philosophy of rage expanded towards a higher sentiment of "fuck tyrants" and he saw the emperor as a tyrant
Mortarian just wanted to be in his goon cave and play world of warcraft and the emperor stole that from him
Magnus loved his dad, but then tried to kill himself, then decided actually tzeentch is his dad
Horus was the jealous one, but Horus' characterization doesn't make sense as the Gayresey implies he was always an ambitious dick who thought he'd run the imperium o algo and that pretending to be a loyal son was itself a ruse
Alpharius disagreed with Omegle how things should be and one of them betarded the other, while the other was a loyal hyperindoctrinated soldier for the emperor
Iron Man seems to have had actual autism and his entire concept of family was that eventually his father would betray him, and so would space dad, so better to betray them both first before they can betray him Macedonian style Alexander the Great killing Phillip politicking
Comrade Curse didn't even try he just accepted he was.... like, so sick and twisted inside, you don't even know
there's other guys I'm forgetting but they kind of suck anyway

The ones with the biggest daddy issues besides logan and horus are the loyalists who constantly question whether "dad" loved them at all, but that doesn't make sense for guys like Girlyman because his parents raised him in a mostly loving home.

>Primarchs
I want to make marine sized primarchs. Then I have them fight classic 3rd/4th edition skirmishes, 1500 pts grand maximum.
Because primarchs were legendary leaders, sure, but they were just that. Living, mortal example. And some endured after the heresy, fought the same battles as the marines who would succeed them. They may have been the smartest, most cunning, or even most martially capable of their era. But the scale was the same. They too could meet their end on a green, grassy field, from a lucky pot shot, unsaved by power armor.

I play vs. my friend's Blood Angels all the time but it'll be my first time against that one detachment. I won this one with a 25pts difference something, I think what won me the game was covering my Neophytes with cheap stuff upfront. I'll try to do the same again.

Looks great bro. Try and use the flat side of your brush when edge highlighting and just gently touch the model. You wanna minimize contact.
Also, Id recommend adding another metallic color to your gun. Making the whole thing silver makes it too monotone. Add a dark gold or something to something like the spikes or those tabs on the sides, break up the color. Consider breaking up the monotony of your wings too with some dark reds on the inside and bright red highlights.

Also I see you painted his eyes white, you could add a bright orange/red/green/whatever contrast paint carefully over it if you wanna give it a glow effect.

The only realistic solution IMO is to bring the lethality of the entire game way, way back down to 3rd/4th edition levels where it's much easier to make Marines stand out as a bit tougher without warping the entire game around it and causing an arms race that completely invalidates weaker weapons and makes it almost physically impossible for units with traditionally more fragile defensive profiles to so much as exist somewhere on the table.

that's marines, the only difference is that you don't have rose tinted glasses for them
>>

Primaris, Grey Knights and Custodes are all gay because it's just bigger batman?

Marines are causing seethe at unprecedented rates and for this, they are truly based
>>
Marine wank is the worst part of 40k.
>>
>>98727540
I don't think they were so overtly protagonist coded, there's tons of marines that are really rough around the edges, job big time, etc.
>>

Imagine getting 40ks version of Tony hawk locked up in a room with her cat and yverine has to watch.

Thanks anon, I appreciate it

Grey Knights are okay because they're not just "space marines but better", they are anti-daemon specialists created for that purpose and are not ideal for fighting most other threats. They've also been in the game since nearly the beginning, which is KIND of true for Custodes but not really because modern Custodes have changed so much from the original incarnation whereas Grey Knights have only changed a little bit.

I absolutely hate Marinefags but I hate custodes slightly less because they make other marinefags seethe like absolutely nothing else. Marinelets have no rebuttal but saying the exact same shit that non-marine players already say about space marines.

There are based marinefags but they're pretty rare because being a based marine fag requires approaching the setting with the bare minimum good humour that most other armies ask of their players.

Generally marinefags are too lost in their masturbatory power fantasy to do this which is why marinefags memes are just the same tired jokes recycled and regurgitated from when they joined the hobby with Dawn of War and/or space marine.

Taufags are spiritual marinefags btw.

No there isn't, stormcast on the other hand are constantly taking Ls, that's there whole thing now, they're dying so much they're barely functional and now daddy belakor hacked their hearthstone. Marines ALWAYS win in the end, and if they don't it was some small battle no one knows about or remembers until the go back and win the next time.
>>
>>98727552
Which is why he's lusting after troonarchs, yes
>>
>>98727561
they were space marines but better due to all psykers and emperor's geneseed and superior armory (despite being super secret being able to field a reliably full company of terminators is a reachable feat for 1% of chapters) till bananas usurped their position from lorewank and better stats

Wasn't always like that, Ultras got their shit rocked in the battle for Macragge, The blood angels lost their entire 1st company to a space hulk. Hell even the Raven Guard chapter master was outmaneuvered and killed by a blueberry.

Primaris ruined everything, Marines stopped being flawed men bailing water out of a sinking ship and started being uncomplicated heroes.

>3s only
fuck now i gotta assemble my battleforce spares, aquillon and allarus are likely the units coming in 2s right? Also I'm not sure what weapon set on telemons - mixed, dual gauntlets, or Accelerator? The Desolator technically can edge it out and forces invuls on mirror/terminator-tiers but RF3 is gonna be hard to beat and you still will need to come closer due to hidden unless playing vs an idiot
