From one FDM mini printer to another, before you prime them hit them with a middling-viscosity filler. Sprue goo can work as can some kinds of glue. It'll knock down the layer lines and fix imperfections for very little effort. It's more effective on 'organic' type miniatures though, less-so for mechanical things like vehicles, mechs, etc.

You want something that is somewhat runny so it'll fill in the low points of the layer lines and adequately settle in.

I was using Vallejo's uniform green but I bought a few other shades like olive green too, with the idea being to layer them to make actual camo patterns before I realised that was way the fuck outta my depth. Will try shading it more on a mini and get stuff for a wash after work.

I like them mostly for the fact that being the one group of guys in camo among the dudes wearing bright blues and yellows blowing shit up is very humorous to me. I wasn't a big fan of the Zaku design when I first got a little into gunpla, but I came around to it. The RX78 still looks contemporary to me, but the zaku looked dated in a way. But some designs make it look less goofy and way meaner.
I think you could make some cool Iron Warriors or something with bits from a zaku like the shoulder pads and heads.

>Came out just as bad on the second go
I think maybe the camo green for my first chapter wasn't the best go, but admittedly the varnish i bought wasn't as matte as I expected. I think tomorrow I'll get a different brand of matte varnish if that still doesn't work I think I'll just paint the basic ultramarines or some shit.
I'd tried to mix multiple shades of green in layers but it just looks like I vomited on the thing...
>>
>>98794395
Anon, no matter what color you pick to paint the marines with, it will look like shit with gloss varnish over it. If you are limited to rattle cans, TS-80 flat clear from Tamiya is imo the golden standard. Vallejo Matt is not terrible, either.
Also, don't try to come up with your own camo. It's a science of its own, and for a good reason. Just copy some real camo colors. Also, camo is meant to be disruptive at distance, so don't just mix greens - real stuff is composed of many colors.

Colour choice question here.
Which colour would you pick the main colour for the blue panels on this?
I'm going to use this colour scheme for my stealth suit Kill Team. I've been wanting to do Tau in that particular colour scheme for years.
I bought AK's Imperial Blue, which looked perfect on colour charts, but is actually way off in person. It's a really cool colour that's extremely saturated and intense, but the wrong kind of blue. Would be perfect for High Elves stuff.

I have a pretty good idea about how I want to do all the other colours, but I need the blue to be just right.
What would you guys recommend for this?
>>
>>98794577
I would call that Dark Prussian Blue but pictures like this are sometimes (intentionally or not) shifted towards violet. But Prussian is probably good starting point.

How do I rehydrate my wet palette or stop it from drying so quickly? I paint for about an hour and then the paints on it have basically dried. The sponge is still wet and I see water on the sides but the paper itself is dry? Do I need to just remove the paper? Kind of defeats the purpose of the palette. I've tried squirting water on the side but that seems kind of useless.
>>
>>98794661
Post pics, and what kind of paper do you use?
Wax paper doesn't work, you need to use unwaxed non-stick baking paper.

I just use this guy with the paper they give you:

https://gameenvy.net/product/exemplar-wet-palette/

The paper is not curling or anything, the paint is just unable to be picked up by my brush anymore.
>>
>>98794395
and other anon missed this; do not just splatter paint on your guy for the pattern, you dont have to be neat with the brush but you do have to be consistent as it's a PATTERN. you dab the paint on in3-5 roughly similar shapes all over the place, then switch to your next colour and do it again.
>>
>>98794708
>>98794661
Do keep in mind that no wet palette will keep the paints straight-out-of-the-bottle wet for very long, they just keep it damp enough to re-wet with a little bit of water from your brush.

Thanks for the suggestions! They all look pretty good, I just need to see them in use or in person. I thought I had it nailed with Imperial Blue, but it was way off in person even though it's a really cool colour.
Yeah, there are a couple of different versions of the same art with different temperature colours, but this one is my favourite. The blues always have a slight purple tone to them and the inner frame and some weapon bits have that grey'ish purple too.
I'm just going for the whole Hazel Gundam scheme. I think it's going to look sick on Tau.

>>
>>98795116
anon is a victim of marketing
many such cases
>>
>>98795116
It's really matter of finding right paper and right sponge material. I had serious problems with finding right combination before (have entire fucking drawer in kitchen full of different baking paper brands) before finding okay one (at least until they change formula or something, to make it better for baking but useless for what I need it for) AND switched sponge from Infinity boxes I was re-using like that to those absorbing wipes sold at hardware stores. Paints still dry, of course, but keep their wetness much longer.
>>
Just use wetter water
>>
>>98794661
>>98795171
The sponge is only there to provide a backing for the water. Kitchen roll, kitchen towel, literally anything absorbent works. For paper I use the cheapest non-stick baking paper. It just werks.
>>
>>98795192
>How do we get our water so wet? Like this! Plus, we use the whole water! That's 65% more water per water!
>>
>>98795222
Again, "just use baking paper" is ill advice since different brands behave differently, some are covered on both sides, some only on one, some use thinner layers of silicone/whatever, some thicker. They are optimized towards their designated use, not our hobby creative one.

where have people gotten this misunderstanding that wet palette is some magical contraption that keeps your paints usable for days on end

you are not supposed to store your paints on the palette you are supposed to store your paints in their pots
palette keeps them wet for longer so they dont dry on you as fast as in normal conditions
dont pour half the bottle on there just take what you need and use that to paint dont just let it set and dry overnight and make the 9000th post about how you were lied to on the Internet

NTA, but that's exactly what wet palette should do, and in case of nonshit wet palettes, it's exactly what they do. Good wet palette with a lid > put it in the fridge at the end of the day > you can go for days.

the airbrush is a needless excess expense and your desire to "save time" with it only exposes that you do not enjoy painting, and therefore begs the question "why the fuck play games in which painting is a major primary component?"
Is it that you just desire the association with the process? I admire the slight dedication to force yourself to arrive at the end result just for the mad street cred that comes with painting tiny inaction figures, but surely vidya would be more your (literal) speed?

must be the 9000th time im typing this in one form or the another but every time some new technology comes around its deemed as cheating because its so easy
first dipping and using inks was cheating then came washes that puritan painters hated etc etc and airbrushing was this new really cool thing where you could finally make realistic spotlights and even surfaces and what they call volumetric lighting these days

airbrushing still gets the hate in one form or another because all the techniques people have invented for it and it is recommended as the easy starter way instead of learning all the normal brush painting first
something new will eventually come around again and it will be the new cheating

I honestly wish it will happen, it was genuinely fun thing to do. I might be stingy on what I buy to myself but I had no problem with buying stuff for someone else and was actually excited waiting to see, how would he react.

I also hope that this year someone would want to try out building some Gunpla, since I have few kits I realised I won't have time to build and would happily send one to someone, as a bonus.

Siocast is universally hated and it's a shame that Corvus Belli decided to use it for Warcrow. They made few TAGs and other heavier units for Infinity at some point but rather quickly switched to Unicool. But damage is done and O-Yoroi or Marut shall remain in this form for quite some time.

Is there any real technique or secret for drilling square holes in things other than a knife and patience? My intent is to drill a round hole in the front of the gun and then square it on the bottom so it looks like a big old muzzle brake, as well as reaming out the plastic in the little vent holes. The problem I'm running into is that my smallest drill bits aren't small enough to get into the side holes, and I don't really have a square drill bit to do the bottom of the arched muzzles.

Forgive the picture I stole from the internet, it's just to demonstrate the issue with the fiddly geometry and tiny holes.
>>
>>98796639
granted that is pretty good way to put it
painting is something we can do on our own any time so why waste that time watching someone else paint
battle reports i understand because that is something everyone most likely gets to do only rarely
>>
>>98796719
only thing that comes to mind is filing a piece of wire to square and heating it to shape the holes if that makes any sense
works only with plastic though
>>
>>98796719
bruh you can't drill square holes no matter what shape the bit is. you drill out the middle and then square up the corners with some other tool. realistically though you wouldn't have a square hole on the end because the brake needs backpressure to work.

The odd time I "watch" painting is while I am painting and it's just one of a hundred or more options for background noise.

And it's imperial counterpart. I imagine this is a civilian vox Node. Basically public communication access terminal or something. Maybe a bit more cyberpunk than grim dark, but I like it. The green window will end up being an advertising screen or some propaganda posters.

Anything I should know before using isopropyl alcohol based paints?
>>
>>98797140
Yeah, quite a lot. Have you looked up any guides?
>>

Mostly safety stuff regarding ventilation, masks and how to clean brushes.
More concerned with whether or not I need to thin them with isopropyl. I'm going to use the Vallejo Liquid Metal series, if that matters at all.

Orktober Model #7 / Week 1 done.

I've also been putting some base coats on some other Ork minis, but Gretchin were the thing I could mostly get finished in time to a standard.
I've been trying out one new skin recipe this week. I've even been liking it without highlights (just army painter Muddy Clothes with glazed in green wash of Phthalo Green).

The squad of Kommandos is what I'm most excited to showcase. It's an experiment with "Go Away Green" / "No see um Gray" that Disney is known for, albeit to my best imitation.

I've also been digging this Warboss with a helmet made from a Defiler head. Painting him like a Freebooter might come off as not as cool, though.

Do they need to be thinned right out of the pot?

I got a few of the dark angels heroes minis and was just looking on youtube about them and i found a video on the official warhammer germany channel about them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdbNA-6IP2o but can not find what I assume is the original version on the main channel. is this like a german but in english exclusive or is the original video just private or something?

Trying my hand at a bit of conversion work on this fatty here. Turning him into a necromancer. There's three main things I need to do to make it work: replace him hammer with a staff of some sort, carve off and replace the comet icon on his belt, and cover up the purity seal on his backpack.
For the staff I plan on using this bit from the Hexwraith kit to make something of a torch to act as his staff. I'm open to other suggestions since it feels a little too small to me. Do I need to drill deeper to make a better pinning connection or will is stay and go on straight as long as I line it up properly? I'll trim it shorter when I get a little further since it's very long right now.
Any suggestion besides a skull to cover the purity seal? I already plan to add a skull or two hanging from the wheel on his back and I don't want to overdo it with the skulls in one area.
For the belt, am I going to want to kill myself carving away at it with a knife? I have access to a dremel but I've never used it.

I like to paint to a pretty high standard, which can be draining sometimes. Watching someone else paint on youtube is a good way to get that hobby fix without spending as much of my own time, effort or money.
It's also fun to see people paint models you don't own, or see people approach a model with a method that's different to yours.
>>

The length of the staff looks fine, but I'd add some dangly bits to those loops on the end, a la picrel (but more evil looking ofc), maybe chains or skulls or something? And then the torch on top, of course.
To cover the purity seal, I think it would be interesting to include something explicitly not-evil looking, like some flowers or something. It could provide some flavourful contrast from a tone and theming perspective.

for pinning make an smaller hole, 1mm is enough, and make it at least 5mm deep on each side

Interestingly enough, I noticed some sort of turn over from social media, a lot of groups gets slowly fed up with bullshit of Meta and move away, sometimes to make their own platform. Little specific case but at last anime con I ran into guys talking about making their own platform for cosplayers (and possibly for related photography as well) precisely because Instagram is a mess and their prototypeis very promising already, photogs themselves more openly talk about moving to other sites like Flickr. Sadly, there is another vector in form of Discord servers, which is much worse solution - closed ecosystems, prone for circlejerking and everything is lost once it closes.

It's sad to see internet as a whole go from fragmented groups to larger consolidation and into isolation instead.
>>
>>98799607
>>98799646
It will never get any better. Yes, social media is one of the primary causes, but the main reason for the old internet dying (and 4chan with it) is simply the influx of normalfags and all the cancer they bring - be it general stupidity or politics. You can't change or outrun that. You could go onion/darknet, but that would kill like 98% of the user base. Yes, all the normalfags, but even a lot of valuable, good posters. It's how you get 2 posts per day kind of thing. Isolation is the only way to kinda-sorta deal with this, and it will never emulate the early 2000s internet anyway.

It's ogre. If you lived through the golden years, consider yourself lucky it happened.

I need to make couple of bases for my winter troops, lore-wise they operate on arctic planet so base will be almost entirety covered in snow. But the main question is - what kind of ground should I place under it? Blackish mud? I have several types of terrain pastes.
