Just saw on the news that all specifically "The 99c Stores" are closing. This is /toy/-related because they do have a notable toy section that currently has what little is left of CG He-man, unsellable Skylanders and a bunch of other rejects and bootlegs.

Clearance starts April 5

Do they close or do they raise the price and need to re-brand their concept.

Dollar Tree has already switched to 1.25 and the offerings there for pretty much everything are trash. Their days are numbered for sure.

Five Below though, they're experimenting with products and prices but poised to be the next Dollar Tree thanks to inflation. I'm sure they'll be fine, though product quality is gonna steadily drop until the stuff we buy there in 5 years is the quality of Dollar Tree 20 years ago.

When companies blame Covid what they're really blaming is unchecked capitalist greed driving inflation. Everyone raised prices during the pandemic because they could and never dropped them again. Without any regulation to prevent it, it's only going to get worse. Pretty soon the only B&M stores in the USA will be Wal-marts and everything else will be Amazon.

Dollar Tree is planning on having products up to $7.

You should blame captitalistic bank loans, investors and stock market. They expect that their investment makes their money back + 12%.
So companies are doomed to grow their market or raise prices. As long as they dont can get more productive without using money they will imcrease inflation.
>>
>>10940244
They already do, since last year in my area, its all in a special aisle that is clearly denoted as being higher priced. Its just name brand stuff thats cheaper at wal mart.

When people type things like this, it makes me worry greatly since you’d think any amount of critical analysis would tell you that this isn’t remotely true. Prices went up specifically BECAUSE of heavy-handed government intervention, not despite it.

I still think it's wild how many of you regularly buy your toys at discount stores like Ross, TJ Maxx and these types of places. I mean it's not like they ever have anything of any value anyway. I can count on one hand how many actually good, desired toys I've found at these places.
>>
>>10940581
I actually bought most of my toys from HLJ and AmiAmi. I mostly collected Figma and Figuarts. I didn't even bother with western lines until Classified. That and Jada Toys Street Fighter are still the only western lines I fuck with. But, I'm also not a whiny poorfag for limpdick redditor. I can afford to pay full price.
>>
>>10940581
99c store is just a special rare case. Ross is a regular for shelfwarming toys
>>
>>10940291
These low cheap places thought they could get away with increasing any of their junks beyound $1. Dollar Tree about to go under as well, trying to sell chinese garbage for $1.25-$3. Might as well go to walmart for that price.
>>

That just means the dollar is getting weaker. Either way dumb americans will keep buying it lol.

Consider there are no alternative to these stores rising up- if the demand is there,
I can only assume people are not buying dollars stuff anymore because they no longer have to buy cheap because they now have more money.

And all the data shows american makes more money and have higher employment rate than ever just further support this

Even the higher stock market proves more money are being made by american that they now have money to invest in stock and spend more resulting in higher corporate earning

F. Another artifact of yesterday’s world gone. I remember when I was young, there was a ninety-nine cents store right next to Walmart and my mom would always get me a toy from there went we went because they were so cheap. That store closed down ages ago and was a local business, but it’s still sad to see the entire concept go. Five Below keeping their name despite now having a cap of fifteen dollars is funny though.

Son, in this specific instance, the company was profitable when it was purchased by a private equity firm.

Most Private Equity firms have bought companies and did so with a lot of debt, and made money off them and when that stopped being easy and cheap, either turned around and resold them, saddling someone else with the debt, or making the banks and others suck up losses in debt, or let the company go bankrupt, which also saddled the banks and insurance companies with debts.

Who turn around and raise premiums, fees, costs, etc., on everyday consumers and other (smaller) business to make up those losses.

Stores have stayed open; they aren't restocking and eventually the fixtures and stuff will be sold. Probably the smaller stores will close by the end of the month and most everything by May 15-May 30.

Definitely everything save for the California stores are history by June 1st. Supposedly some former suits before the company was sold and the former guy behind Big Lots wants to buy the name and the California locations ONLY, but that's a big ask.
>>
>>10940240
>unchecked capitalist greed driving inflation. Everyone raised prices during the pandemic because they could and never dropped them again.

Greedy businesses can always raise prices and consumers react accordingly. Stores can't just raise a 2 liter of soda to $10 or $100 dollars and expect people to keep buying them. Walmart uses low margins to make the most money they can. Their greedy calculations tell them not to just arbitrarily raise prices, that this would lower their profits. Governments gave people and companies billions in stimulus for doing nothing and the federal reserve printed a ton of money. This causes inflation. Basic economics.

Ross and Burlington both sell stores but both stores I recently checked out were very cleared out and I don't think they were restocked since the holidays.

We have Aldi's in the States and there's even an Aldi about 15 miles from me, but I wouldn't mind if they put in one of those closer to where I live to take the place for one of the three 99 Cents only stores that has closed/will be closed down (They already closed on store a month ago).

>>10940291
>buying low cheap products from dollar stores
People are still buying cheap certain things. I shop at Target and Ralphs and Vons, but I get something like Comet/Ajax/bleech, generic q-tips, etc. from a 99 Cents only store.

It has noting to do with the economy being better. It also doesn't cost me more gas since I bike ride or take public transit plus there are three stores near me.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point. Not alot of manufacturing jobs out there so forget about working one an d learning enough to manufacture your own product. Also forget about finding a place to manufacture a product for you unless you know Mandarin and have connections in China to boot.

What, you thought it was a coincidence that all we seem to "make" any more are phone apps and podcasts? Software development is pretty much the only way I could make something, what with not being enough of a grifter to run a YouTube channel.

>>
>>10943354
Looks like all the stores will close before the end of April. They are not restocking. So they lied to all the employees and didn't even bring merchandise in to their warehouse in SO CAL. A lot of the perishable food was gone today and the manager I spoke to at the second store I hit said that as soon as they get down to 10-20% of the stock, they are closing a location down and moving that to the nearest store.

They are already selling fixtures.

>>10944587
I didn't vote for Joe but in California my vote wouldn't have helped or hurt. I would never vote for an idiot orange that cheats on golf to give himself a trophy, and then brags about it on a social network that's today's Game Stonk nonsense, even if it will likely make him a million.

If you think Orange Jesus profiting off his supporters is any better than private equity firms profiting on employees and shoppers, you're an idiot that deserves everything awful that will happen to you over the next 8-12 years no matter who wins any election.

When AI robots take your fast food job from you and reduce you to working on something that still needs to be done by human hands, like picking produce that would otherwise bruise, in a hot sweaty sun, I'll just laugh and laugh and laugh.

Most stores are closing by next weekend, so anyone wanting to look needs to do so by then, but a lot of the toys left are not crap you are going to want unless you luck into it at a location. I'm going to see a movie this evening and have to stop at a print shop on the way so going to leave an hour earlier and hit two stores by the print shop.
>>
>>10943259
Im sorry gramps, but you are mistaken. Shoplifting under $900 of merchandise in CA is now an infraction. An infraction is NOT a criminal offense. Its the same as a parkint ticket. Look it up if you dont believe me. Not a crime. Have a nice day.

>When companies blame Covid what they're really blaming is unchecked capitalist greed driving inflation. Everyone raised prices during the pandemic because they could and never dropped them again.
In case this isn't bait, let me ask you this anon. If companies can set whatever prices they want, why don't they just sell everything for 1 million dollars so they can make as much money as possible? If you answered "because nobody would pay that much" you are correct, that is the first step in understanding supply and demand. There was more supply of money due to stimulus checks, government blowing money on random crap, and money printer brrrr-ing shenanigans in general, so people who would previously not pay 1.25 for their doodads are now willing to do so. It's not going to "go back down" to 1.00 because that money is still in circulation. If you dont want inflation to happen stop printing money

If you think people still have any of the $2-5K they got in 2019/2020 and it wasn't spent on groceries, rent, utilities, or non-necessities, you aren't paying attention to the absurdly low saving rates in the USA, the amount of revolving credit debt in the USA (highest on the planet by far), etc.

tl;dr you're too stupid to breath and be taking up valuable real estate, son
>>
>>10955454
Yeah, the same dude saying they won't raise prices too high because they need stuff to sell apparently forgot about the PPP loans that were forgiven, meaning that, no, the don't need stuff to sell because they already got a trillion dollar handout from the government.
