The original Bionicle Toa were 7 bucks ($12.50 with inflation), and the new buildable figures cost at MINIMUM twice as much and aren't a whole lot bigger. Even Bionicle G2, which many complained about being too expensive, cost about 10 dollars less. The difference is that Bionicle was a huge risk in 2001 since it required dozens of new molds, which would have been garbage if the theme hadn't been such a massive hit. The payoff was Bionicle being a really good value, since the large specialized molds meant fewer pieces and thus a lower price tag for something that feels pretty substantial. Modern Lego is extremely risk-adverse, so now we get these figures that are 99% existing molds. If they don't sell (and I assume they do since they keep making more) they can easily cut their losses and pull the plug.

Are there any good cheaper sets that could function as a mobile base? I used to have pic related as a kid, I was pretty poor so it was mostly tiny little sets but that boat was the lifeblood of my Lego collection. It's all gone now, though. The City Police Mobile Crime Lab Truck or Gaming Tournament Truck are pretty decent options in your price range. The Fortnite Battle Bus would be perfect but it's twice what you're looking to pay. The Harry Potter sets I’ve gotten have been unironically fun and decent play features. They’re super modular and store away east enough. 10/10 would recommend checking a set out if you’re on the fence.

I would also check out the bricklink forums and buy out stores selling all of their figures. My I ended up just storing them in the bags they got shipped in and kind of just hoarded the figs. I have boxes of them I bought in like 2005-2010 I haven't touched in over a decade. I don't even know what I have. If I had to guess, probably about 2,000 in sets I own and know I have and another 5,000+ in bulk. Some of my best buys were 300+ original western calvary soldiers for $2/piece, 100+ Ice Planet figures for $1/piece and 200 of the original phase 1 star wars clones for $5/piece. I don't sell anything so I still have them all.These are all from long ago, now finding those kind of deals is impossible.
