European media and American media says America, especially southern states, are horrible places to visit. But everytime my countrymen visit they say America is paradise and Americans are the nicest people in the world with the best food. Who is lying?

You can live pretty well off in the south/midwest for 40k if you're smart with your money, pay off debt as a priority, and don't try to keep up with the Jones's. After this year of living in Asia(going on 10 years from 24->34), looking to buy a house+car somewhere in Texas or Georgia which the houses I've seen add up to 170k total or ~2 years my saved salary. Property taxes seem to be <1500/yr, utilities aren't that bad, and I'll see how it goes.
