I've been on /hor/ for years and I can honestly say Lowlifes is one of the best new horror films I've seen recently. It's not perfect but I enjoyed it. Practical effects, good story, keeps you wondering what will happen, and keeps going strong after the twist.

7/10, maybe higher.

Well, here is my review of Sting. It is not good. The "monster" is some little girl's 1cm big spider. And they try to make her into some "adventurous boy" character but it just falls flat because she is also the main character and constantly showing her doing boy stuff through out the whole movie was very unrealistic. Showing the insect African bug exterminator die in the first 5 mins and then keep showing him through out the rest of the movie seemed a little too try hard at diversity. His character was very out of place. None of the characters in the film were interesting and everyone in the movie seemed depressed. Overall, its a shitty movie.
>>

>. And they try to make her into some "adventurous boy" character but it just falls flat because she is also the main character and constantly showing her doing boy stuff through out the whole movie was very unrealistic
>then keep showing him through out the rest of the movie seemed a little too try hard at diversity
How was the rest of the movie besides the "wokeness"? That was most of your review and it doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary for a 2020s release.
>>
>>198514926
"Modern" as in mid-17th century?
Or "modern" as in "vaguely contemporary"?
And in the latter case: Where do you draw the lines for that one? Post-Y2K? Post-2010? Post-2020?
>>
>>198515399
>How was the rest of the movie
Kinda reminded me of Crawlspace. Do I recommend you watch Sting? Not really. It is a very flat movie. The whole movie you expect something to happen, but its its almost like a slow burn film but not quite. The whole movie was kinda going Hereditary vibes too.(The father being some drawing on a table guy.) Very flat dull movie. It reminds of that French movie about some butcher guy that eats his new hires. It was recommend here. This movie takes inspiration from a lot of movies and its quite obvious.
>>
>>
>>198515399
>very unrealistic
it is not that in is "unrealistic" per se, but its just constantly showing "see? girls can have interests and have personality and have adventuristic personality." Like literally non stop and then the ending comes and its like "omg, seriously. lol"
>>
>>198515508

>Many friends were surprised by this marriage and believed it would not last long. Venetia Stevenson admitted to Charles Winecoff: "[I]t was a big shock when I heard [Tony] got married. I went, not Tony. He was very gay, totally gay."[51] Even Berenson admitted some reserves:
>"A lot of people looked at the two of us and said 'Who are they kidding? This is never going to work.' I was so naïve I couldn't figure out what they were talking about. He told me [that he was gay], and it just didn't register. I had been very sheltered."[201]
>He was in therapy with psychologist Mildred Newman, whom Stephen Sondheim later described to author Mark Harris as "completely unethical and a danger to humanity." In his 2021 biography of Mike Nichols, Harris wrote that "Perkins and his longtime boyfriend, Grover Dale, had both become convinced that their homosexuality was obstructing their happiness and wanted to restart their lives with women," adding that Newman and her husband–partner Bernard Berkowitz "clung to the belief that male homosexuality was a form of arrested development, and made a small fortune convincing willing clients that it was an impediment to getting what they wanted."[206] When interviewed for a 1999 documentary on Perkins, friend and collaborator Sidney Lumet said "I [asked him why he went into therapy and] said, 'Well, how about you?' [He said] 'I'm a homosexual ...' From then on, he spoke about it completely openly, and I remember when ... he said that period of his life was over with, and I said, 'Well, how come, Tony? How did it happen?' And he said, 'I just didn't want it anymore.'"[7]
>Many friends, partners, and colleagues have consistently said Perkins was homosexual rather than bisexual.[7][207][208][51][66][209][210][211

He described himself as homosexual, everyone who knew him said he was gay and had no attraction to women, and he made it clear that his marriage was part of a ploy to learn not to be gay, and in the end he gayly decided he was just gay, and then gay died from a gay disease called gay AIDS. Gay.

I'll never understand the link between hardcore horror fans and hardcore consumerism. Lining up around the block to get autographs from some nobody who was in the background of an 80s slasher for 30 seconds. Buying literally any item that has Jason, Freddy, or Michael's face on it. Tattooing fictional serial killers on themselves. The rooms filled with merch are extremely common and its mostly all the same crap.

And both times they didn't use contraception, she happened to be receptive, and all stars aligned perfectly to guarantee impregnation. Sounds very likely indeed.

Also, I find it kinda hillarious that we're now discussing the sex life of an actor who died 30 years ago because some people insist that he must have been 100% gay because it fits some narrative about ... Vincent Price and Chucky the murder doll?

You make it sound like a homosexual man can't, under any circumstances or for any other reason, have sex with a woman. He wanted a normal life because he started to think being gay was holding him back as a person, and then he went back on that and accepted that he was just gay.
> I find it kinda hillarious that we're now discussing the sex life of an actor who died 30 years ago because some people insist that he must have been 100% gay because it fits some narrative about ... Vincent Price and Chucky the murder doll?
I don't know about all that. Vincent Price wasn't gay and I don't watch the Chucky series. Anthony Perkins, however, was gay, and you don't get AIDS from straight sex with your wife.

I think I am pretty hardcore in terms of being a horror fan since I've seen so many horror movies but I've never, ever bought anything horror related. Not even a Bluray. I pirate it all and my parents would show me horror movies growing up.
>>
>>198519770
>under any circumstances or for any other reason
I guess if it was rape, blackmail or another form or force or coercion, then yeah. Maybe if there was a really significant amount of outside pressure. But if it happens willingly, I really don't see how a man who has sexual intercourse with a woman could be considered gay.
>he started to think being gay was holding him back as a person
That sounds ridiculous, considering the general sentiment of gay people in the 1980s that saw living out their desires as liberating, and the general sexual liberation movement between the 1960s and the 1990s. But if accurate, then, at least for a while, Perkins saw himself as hetero or bisexual.
>and you don't get AIDS from straight sex with your wife.
Setting aside that you actually can get AIDS from straight sex with your wife (namely when she got it in some other way), no one ever claimed that he was only having straight sex, let alone only with his wife.

How about, as was said, the fact that he was attempting conversion therapy? That was what led him to marry a woman as a step in his treatment, but then he went and continued fucking men, and almost certainly exclusively, as his wife was not HIV-positive.
>>
>>198520386
>That was what led him to marry a woman as a step in his treatment
He also stayed married, and sired two children with said woman. I think if you are that deep into a relationship, no matter how you got there, you're committed to it to the point where you cannot possibly just be gay.
>almost certainly exclusively, as his wife was not HIV-positive
That's not how it works. Condoms help. Not that I particularly care about those details of a long dead guy's sex life. Maybe he left his wife thirsty. Or maybe she got it elsewhere towards the end. But there most definitely was a prolonged period in his life where he did have sex with a woman.

I get what you're saying but you're saying it without acknowledging the fact that Anthony Perkins described himself as a homosexual and stated that he was undergoing therapy to correct his lifestyle. He ended up with AIDS, which he only announced weeks before his death, concealing that fact because he was living a double life. This has been posted already, you have only to accept it.
>>
>>198519784
OK, I'm a third of the way through and not feeling it. From a formal standpoint it's like they're not even trying to convince you that this is a real TV show, and the writing and performances are pretty weak.
>>
>>198520691
>you have only to accept it.
This is not something that's hard to "accept". This is just a very technical debate about what we should call it when someone sleeps with men and women, regardless of what he considers himself.
Not that this particular case is even a hill I need to die on when the post I spoke out against made way more absurd claims in the same vein.

>>
>>198520860
They cheat the found footage conceit by having "Behind the scenes footage" which a late night talk show wouldn't even have and it's recording stuff that actual "Behind the scenes" cameramen would never record. It's just a way of them conveying information to the audience that they can't figure out how to get across in a found footage format. This would have been better as a traditional horror film, it would have freed them up in terms of acting shooting strategies that could have made it moodier.
>>
>>198507206
This movie is good until he actually fights the monsters. Then the camera work becomes so aggressive to hide the fact Cage is doing one move to each robot continuously. When you realize this, the action loses all ferocity and so does the film.

It's the characterization. It's where so many horror movies fail and this low budget 1 hour flick from ten years ago succeeds.
