It does work on an emotional/character level as you said but it just felt too generic, too hollow to actually get anything more out of it than that. Like this scene the show almost gets there for me in a lot of ways but given the importance of monologues and dialogue in the show it misses that last oomph to really hit the way it could have. Though, I suppose "it's not transcendental" is kind of a high bar to be setting for something like this and a bit unfair.
