This repression leads to him beating her, which leads to Mariko growing even colder, which starts a vicious cycle all because it's the only way Buntaro can show any feelings. There's a line in that book scene with Toranaga anon mentioned where Buntaro says something to the effect that, in his head, he sees his abuse of her as a compulsion that directly stems from his love of her. I forget exactly what he says, but it's something along those lines. The autism run deeps.
