Someone please tell me why in every Star Trek show they have no email, no text messaging, no ability to send a simple text file from one device to another. Not even a hard wired ship wide LAN.

When ever you need to give someone a report or some sort of digital information you have to physically hand them a tablet so they can read it off the tablet? I mean modern phones have the ability to just seamlessly connect and share data over Bluetooth and other protocols. So you're telling me a multi-species Federation with a massive fleet of interstellar ships capable of warp 9.8 can't figure out simple file sharing over a network? They can scan your entire molecular existence, turn it into data, kill the donor body, and then materialize a nearly identical clone thousands of kilometers away as if by magic....but they can't email???

Make this make sense /tv/.....Am I taking crazy pills here?

Explain how being a 19th century troglodyte gives you soul? It's not a steam punk starship and even if it was I bet they would still have better wireless networking abilities.

Except they all use the holodeck which is known to create addiction. You're absolutely incorrect. Not to mention The Federation is about 700 colonies on 120+ worlds. You think they don't have a social network of sorts? By definition their communications network is a de facto social network.

This and many other issues with Trek really bother me. The flashlight issues too. All the flashlights in Trek are HUGE and cumbersome. Often comically huge and in the way. They have flashlights that strap to your wrist and look like Megaman blasters they are so big. Or those strange hard to hold on to light boxes on other Trek shows. Why not just put a flashlight in the back of all the tricorders like we have flashlights in our phones? I mean a tiny LED and a tiny battery could fit almost anywhere and a $10 flashlight from Walmart is brighter and smaller than anything The Federation possesses. So they can't master email or flashlights?

Make it make sense /tv/!

Air gapping your android brain is smart, why would Data have a exploitable route to hack his brain? He wouldn't. Dr. Soong is smart.

Stupid geezer answer afraid of le magical hacker, why would he be hindered to learn stuff by reading and interfacing with the ship with his hands.
>meanwhile ships can be self destructed by remote control in 1 password
>>
>>198557945
>why
Because humans don't have a wireless interface and his design and goal are to be human, not efficient.
>>
>>198558000
So why have a robot pretending to be human to pilot the ship
and not have a AI to pilot the ship
more stupid in 3 levels
>>
>>198557463
>>198557878
It's just production limitations. Everything had to be made with stuff that was available to the production team in the 80s which sets a precedent for the trek aesthetic and way of doing things. Airgapped Data totally makes sense however and his speed and accuracy with the computer voice commands hardly ever makes it look like a limitation.
>>
>>198558044
They do have a computer pilot the ship. When helm sets a course, there are a thousand steps being automated away behind it.
>>
>>198558070
it is not a matter of props

Basically this >>198558000 Data was a work of art and science by Dr. Soong. He's as elegant as he is revolutionary. More art than android and if you doubt that note no other androids were ever created like Data. I don't count that Picard Show BS. Soong was the only one who could create the positronic brain. Even Data himself failed at making an android, this proves it's beyond science and more art. The master artist dies(Soong) and no matter how many try nothing they make is the same as the master painted.

I would argue that Data could have a hard wired port to facilitate faster data transfer. He has hot wired himself to various systems before if I remember correctly. But it's not the norm. Like anon said I think Data was made to read and use his eyes and hands so he could be more human.
>>
>>198558154
Data isn't at the helm, Crusher, Ro, and various other officers are at the helm. Data is at Ops.
>>
>>198558185
Also stupid
Give up loser
>>
>>198555699
its not anything new or ever said before but seven and the doctor completely carry voyager
>>
>>198558044
Data isn't AI, he's a new form of life birthed by Dr. Soong. AI < Data/Lore. You can't compare the two. Data grows and learns as a unique individual. He's alive in almost every aspect we use to measure it, AI isn't.

>>198558154
This, the flashlights actually got bigger in later shows. Look at my posts, TNG flashlights were boxes and Voyager used even bigger props, just two maglights duct taped to their wrists.
>>
>>198558211
You just aren't very good at creating a convincing, logically coherent argument. Almost as if your purpose here was to behave stupidly for attention.

>>
>>198558154
It is a matter of props. They could only be as creative as they could realistically reproduce and afford. The tech is always going to end up that way. Especially noticable for stuff like flashlights. It's not a novel, whatever happens on the creative side has to be made real for filming.
>>
>>198558377

They do. I know you've never seen the show, but characters frequently say things like "Computer, perform complicated task" and it does so. In fact, the Enterprise computer seems to be superior to Data in many instances, when asked to outsmart Data it was able to casually create a sentient holo being.

I just finished watching the all the 10 original star trek movies, after watching TOS and TNG

from the motion picture to nemesis
it was weird and disappointing ride
some of the originals were really good, and the rest was whatever
the only decent movie on the new generation was the one with the Borgs and James Cromwell. every other movie was dogshit
maybe none of them is adobe the actual show, jesus

should I watch DS9? is it true that the quality will sharply decay once I reach the 2000's?

>Jax even gets a special more form fitting one which is much sexier than the cat suits they threw on seven and t'pol
Ehhhhhhh....disagree. But everyone is allowed to have their own taste. Seven is more in your face sexuality. Dax is more subtle. Same with Kira.

>Gene who demanded they be skintight to show off how fit everyone would be in the future.
>Love that horny bastard, here's an ensign checking out Riker's ass in Encounter At Farpoint

Everyone acts like it was just the men forcing the women to wear tight clothing. But the Trek actresses approved the costumes and had a say in their design. Fans need to read more interviews and research.

Kira's Actress (Nana Visitor) actually demanded to be put into high heels. She felt her character was too masculine in the early episodes and felt heels would make her more feminine and soften her image with audiences. She had tremendous fun doing the special Trek episodes where she played an evil Kira or a James Bond Bashir woman.

Seven of Nine's actress (Jeri Ryan) had no problem wearing a skin tight outfit. She has said in the past she was proud of her body and wanted to show it off. The only minor issue she had was the neck was a little tight in the silver catsuit so they removed the neck in later costumes.

I could go on but fans need to remember that these were women actresses in their 20s and 30s. They WANT attention because it helps their careers. They WANT to show off while they are still young and in their prime. Dax's actress was a swimsuit and lingerie model before Trek IIRC. Most attractive actresses do not want to be buried inside a costume like Chewbacca. They want to leverage their looks to push their careers

I definitely wasn't insinuating the actresses were put in sexy costumes to appease the ghost of gene. I just think the idea of a future were everyone is just slightly horny all the time is funny, especially when it's a "utopian" future. The idea that most women don't want to show case their femininity is ridiculous

>Seven is more in your face sexuality. Dax is more subtle. Same with Kira.
Yeah that's what I like about Dax and Kira. Seven was ridiculously attractive, but after a while the cat suit got boring. Jeri Ryan had these amazing facial expressions though, she did a great job selling sex appeal without being explicitly sexual and I think her costume would have been more tantalizing if it was busted out for special occasions - like she only wears it while regenerating or something.

It's hilarious how ridiculously prudish modern Star Trek has become. Women aren't allowed to be sexy in any way. Or if they are, they are only allowed to be lesbians. Or old people only.

Gene envisioned a future where sexuality was liberated and free. He told the TNG writers he wanted Riza to be a true pleasure planet. Where orgies were happening out in the open and you could freely join in. Where everyone was experience sex and pleasure to the highest degree. Instead we got some weird swimsuit beach family friendly planet. The TNG writers and producers said a real pleasure planet would never happen due to censorship.

You would think modern Trek we would actually get a real pleasure planet since the show isn't on Network TV anymore. It's on streaming. So no rules. They certainly dialed up the violence to 11 like with the scene of them ripping out Icheb's eyeball and ripping apart his guts to take his Borg implants.

But nope. No sex.
>>

>Someone please tell me why in every Star Trek show they have no email, no text messaging, no ability to send a simple text file from one device to another. Not even a hard wired ship wide LAN.
Because none of it would work while at warp. During warp, the vessel and all occupants are in a persistent state of waveform collapse which has a wide range of quantum effects, one of which is that information which isn't being observed becomes randomized, immediately making any files stored digitally into useless gibberish. Even signals sent over a wired LAN undergo waveform collapse, which means that while at warp any files need to be stored on shielded devices and moved around the vessel manually.

Wasn't her mother explicitly an ambassador? That kept leaking into her role as a counselor/alien empath/diplomat. It has lore potential. Having a specific 'diplomat' position on the ship wouldn't make a ton of sense given the variety of missions, though I can see that having an assigned diplomat would put a lot more power and conflict into place between Picard and the political officer. Plays into socialist space paradise democracy idea.

Maybe I think this as it is just a novelty to see her in it but, I think she would have looked better - for both coomer and non-coomer reasons - in an actual uniform.

Yes, he mother was played by the ships computer and Roddenberry wife Majel Barrett who was a betazoid ambassador and had Lurch as an aide.
It would have made sense to have a designated diplomat officer who could inform the captain on foreign customs and xenobiology, but as explorers, the captain and xo already are diplomats.

I could see it working, she's not a diplomat to a specific federation/empire/whatever, but she acts as a representative of the UFP when interacting with anyone who doesn't have a formal relationship with the federation. At least it gives her a reason to be on the bridge.

>>198565519
>as explorers, the captain and xo already are diplomats.
But they're also officers in a quasi-military. If Deanna wasn't a part of Star Fleet she could be some sort of civilian diplomat.
>>
Obviously it is trying to be something of a family show and even without that there is nothing really to be gained or truly mature about including sex and so on just for the sake of it however, there is an element of Star Trek that feels weirdly sexless. I am guessing this comes from how it is supposed to be future that is more comfortable with sex however, all we see are PG13 attempts of being sexy and there is that element of people being pretty reserved.
>>
>>198565710
We have to remember that the ship is still technically a professional environment. They're all required to work and do their duties, that's what gives them purpose in a future where you could literally live in a perpetually unique and enticing gooncave that feeds and fucks you as much as you want. So the people choosing to be on a ship like the Enterprise are there because they want to work and to engage in the universe in a purposeful manner. When sex is used in an episode it's to add stress to the characters involved or to be comic relief because it's so far out of the norm from what the crew are used to.
>>198565658
Her position as ship's counselor and her empathetic powers really do make her an asset to the bridge crew, beyond weekly struggle sessions. She can sense how people are feeling when they make a decision and can inform the crew of how the opposing entities are positioned emotionally.

I would say it less true in TOS but, by the TNG-DS9-VOY era that goes in hand with how sterile and stagnant the culture seems to be. There are the meta-reasons for it but, look at how much of the culture is not 'contemporary' or really new: late-Victorian/early-Edwardian Sherlock Holmes, mid-20th century noir Dixon Hill, a faux 1930s conception of the future Captain Proton, being fighter pilots in the Battle of Britain etc. etc. Yes sure we nowadays set things in the past and revisit/keep old franchises going however, the bulk of the things made are set in the contemporary.

For how many people there are on the Enterprise, and as Starfleet likes to remind everyone it is a non-military research ship, there realistically should be a xenobiologist, xenopsychologist, xenoanthropologist and perhaps even some legal expert. We do not see them and all the other positions there perhaps should be as the show can only have so many character and it is just makes more sense from a pure writing perception to assign such roles to an existing character.

The same reason the "save" function in a program looks like an old floppy disk.
Visually showing information is a lot more satisfying as a viewer than just hearing that information was sent telepathically or wirelessly.
Realistically the ships would be completely automated or run by robots but since they expect humans to watch this show there's a certain level of analog, physical interaction to make the events comprehensible.

Part of what makes the future of Star Trek so bright is that the post scarcity society lets everyone choose the life that gives them the most happiness. Maybe you want to live in a carpeted apple store. Maybe you want to be a groundskeeper with sage wisdom. Maybe you want to wear drab coveralls and terraform a colony. The point is, it's your choice.
