Why do people pretend Japanese films (whether animated or live-action) are any better than their American counterparts in modern times even though they share the exact same problems, if not worse?

Pic VERY much related.
>>
>>198565702
Because for all the problems Japanese films may have, they at least have heart and soul. The Japanese creators at least try to make their movies good. Even if the acting can sometimes be weird or their budgets are small.

American movies, with exception of a few, have become nothing but mass produced garbage. 98% of modern movies have become studio made Hollywood slop. Made by committee. Total garbage. Most Audiences have stopped going to the theater.

The last film I actually cared about seeing in the theater was Top Gun Maverick. That movie had soul and you could see the creators cared about making a good and entertaining product.

That's better than Minions or Lightyear.

Modern Japanese media is truly awful.
But at one point in time it was among the best in the industry. The writing, the acting, the story telling. It was all beyond every American director except John Ford.

Bullshit. If that's the case then why does the Evangelion reboot exist? They are the Japanese counterpart to the American movie studio's mass produced garbage. The entire sweatshop industry of Japanese cartoons is centered around mass producing and regurgitating the same formula over and over again for the sake of crony capitalists and their merchandise sales.

Look at this interview. Yet delusional fans will continue to insist that these movies are some sort of masterclass in storytelling; they're not. They're a product first and foremost filled with holes and production hell behind the scenes. I don't see how this is different to cases such as the Zack Snyder cultists or Marvel fanboys.
>>
>>198566541
Just when you thought that pulling a Deus Ex Machina through self-aware time travel was about as lazy as it gets for the film industry, this fucking guy comes in and somehow manages up one-up Marvel in that category despite his movies being barely above DCEU tier.
>>
Does anybody actually think the Rebuilds are good though? I've only heard mostly bad things about them
>>
>>198566565
That's not saying much when the same franchise as in OP was once in the same conversation as classic Sci-Fi from the Kubrick/Tarkovsky era and whatnot. It had the potential to be true cinema, no need for any American "adaptations" courtesy of WETA or whoever. Even if it started out as something more akin to long-form television.

Instead, they rebooted a dead franchise (just like Hollywood does) and turned it into watered-down content on par with any other digital era animation that studios from the country now produce. Ultimately, the criticisms of more old-school directors towards the American film industry and its current state can also be applied to Japan as well in one way or another.

Yes, as far as I can tell. Go on Rottentomatoes and YouTube or wherever and see how many people you actually have criticizing the series and these movies outside of this website compared to western films. I reckon you won't find that many critiques or criticisms.

And as far as I've seen, Evangelion fans and audiences are basically no different to Marvel fanboys. Especially since the original series outside of its brief improbable resurrection has been all but overwritten by the reboot outside of those in the know. The brand is squarely focused around them as far as I've seen (since they have a store focused around turning it into a fashion brand).

Evangelion fans (or at least nu-Evangelion fans) are very sensitive to criticisms of it and Hideaki Anno from what I've seen. And if you go on forums or wherever (like Evageeks) to discuss legitimate criticisms people will (to paraphrase another anon from an earlier thread on similar matter) insult you and ignore all the analysis and evaluation, they would just spam you with numbers and media literacy invocation of why you cannot criticize the series.

Can you actually list some concrete examples of which works represent that 'best in the industry' though?

The final version's white skin is very high, I think it ends up losing detail and makes it more uncanny.

Nice setup & payoff, jackhole. Impressive that he pulled off all that setup in the last 15 minutes. Jesus Christ, what do people even watch these movies for? It's like someone saw the blueshirt Picard segment of Tapestry and thought "yep, THAT's what we want as the resolution for our clusterfuck of a teratology".

I know the self-aware stage with boxes moving around shit is intentional, but throughout all 4 movies there's just something seriously wrong with the color palette. It just feels so lifeless.

Top right is my favorite. Even if its the same face look how much better it looks without the harsh shadow under her nose. It makes the duckface in the final much more prominent. The color also just blends together better like anon said.

top is better, looks less life like, as if it were literally a giant mannequin, which plays into the whole motif of rei being a "doll", all of which is lost in the bottom
this movie desperately needed a script doctor and better editors

>Rebuild of Evangelion, known in Japan and on Amazon Prime Video as Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版, Evangerion Shin Gekijōban), is a Japanese animated film series and a retelling of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime television series, produced by Studio Khara.

Did anyone actually take this part seriously? I was basically laughing my ass off when they started bombarding us with all of this CGI in the 4th one after being numbed by the poorly lit and weightless implementation of it in the 3rd and 2nd movie.

It's not that there's a demographic for it, but you've got some imageboard brain things going on the series probably couldn't have anticipated 30 years ago. I don't think the message can reach you.

Nah, the original series was and still is perfectly relevant and enjoyable to this day. The cash grab reboot is just the director being a "shit nobody cares about" enthusiast (whilst covering for the fact there is no story). Or at least, nobody outside of the slave bugmen land of the rising sun likely cares.
>>
>>198572890
The movies were made in 2007-2012, followed by a long ass production hell until 2021. That's not 30 hears. Also the television show is literally called "gospel of the next generation". Kinda lame if you didn't have foresight to look further than the 1990s somehow.
