In the 1980 version John is presented as less of a pirate thug and more of "the smart guy that plotted the ships course". Which is far better because him being manipulated and duped by Toranaga hits a lot harder.

His romance with Mariko is played up which is kind of boring, but he has more interaction with the Portuguese and his surviving crew, and he holds a grudge against Yabu for boiling that guy alive.
