Platoon. Written and directed by a vet. Love AN of course and enjoy FMJ very much.

FMJ is fucking garbage.

You'd need one if you were ever in the shit but you would never be because you'd fake a disability or flee abroad

Platoon followed up with Born on the 4th of July
>>
>>198573337
Apocalypse Now>Full Metal Jacket>Platoon

Platoon comes off pretentious with Dafoe as some christ figure, but the grounded stuff showing Charlie Sheen as a rookie is fine.
>>
>>198573337
apocalypse now. nothing even comes close in any aspect.
>setting
>soundtrack
>peformances
>cinematography
it went way deeper than FMJ with it's themes. the unpreparedness of american soldiers, the weakness inherent to seeking comfort in a warzone, the hipocrisy of 'humane' war, all the lunacy of it.
plus there's an occult theme i still have not cracked despite all these years. something like an initiation but very esotheric.

I'm going to unscrew your head and shit down your neck
>>

Barnes as the devil, Chris in the middle with them fighting for possession of his soul. It's called high art without losing any of the grit or realism. Highest order kino. Platoon and Wall Street qualify Stone as a genius.
>>
Apocalypse Now > Full Metal Jacket >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Platoon

Charlie Sheen is a horrible actor.
>>
>>198574248
It was good but it was more so one mans story and a rogue Colonel. It's too bad Marlon Brando was in his no fucks given phase but they made his shots work.
>>
>>198574396
one man's story that perfectly encapsulated everything wrong about the war and why it made no sense.
brando still gave a memorable peformance and i fucking despite the guy.
>>
>>198574184
Did your parents have any children that lived?
>>
>>198574435
I get it but Hamburger Hill achieved that perspective and Platoons perspective simultaneously. So maybe it's the greatest. Brando looked like a fat fuck in some shots it kinda took you out of the moment.

Rank them however you want; as long as you remember that none of them come close to these three
>>
>>198574549
That movie took its sweet ass time to get to the point but it was good.
>>
>>198573337
Apocalypse Now is the most kino. Full Metal Jacket is the most entertaining. Platoon is a middle ground.
>>
>>198574553
It's good but it starts out very very slow. You gotta power through like half of it.
>>
>>198574553
You can scroll /tv/ for the first 50 minutes; until you see the wedding scene.
>>
>>198574549
There it is. People filtered by the first half are turboplebs.
>>
>>198573337
Deer Hunter is better than all of these three.
>>
Platoon is the most rewatchable IMO. Apocalypse Now is great but by design it's exhausting to watch.

FULL... METAL... JACKET.
>>
>>198573337
Platoon is the best of those three. FMJ drops off a fucking cliff after basic training and Apoc is pretentious meandering filth.
Platoon tells a story with a as satisfying an ending as you can get in a nam film.

Vietnam was 100x more kino than WW2.
The best "War on Terror" kino is yet to be made.
>>
>>198573378
Better than Platoon, but not either of the other two.
>>
.
>>
I've noticed that classic war movies bring out the worst takes on /tv/. Check the other Apocalypse Now thread from today. Beyond lack of taste, it's complete lack of understanding. Wild.
>>
>>198574956
It refers to getting minced by bombs and guns.
>>
>>198574376
plus Charlie Sheen don't surf.

FMJ is the worst
>>
>>198573337
The Deer Hunter obviously
>>
>>198573337
Watched Platoon the other day and while it’s good it doesn’t feel as epic as Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now was.
>>
Platoon at least had this gem of a song
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Kvthte6XkUA
>>
>>198573337
All three of them kind of suck, but at least FMJ has R Lee Ermey busting everyone's balls in the first part and that was worth a laugh.
>>
>>198574184
Is that you John Wayne?
>>
>>198578505
Platoon was not meant to be epic
>>
>>198573337
>Themes and story
Apocalypse
>Realism
Platoon
>Capturing the actual day-to-day insanity of life as a grunt
