That was actually one giant piece of wood carved out of a whole mahogany tree, wetted, and slowly and meticulously warped over the course of several months by this master carpenter. Part of the idea of the future is that it instead of being flashy its simple, ergonomical, and classy so they took incredible painstaking detail in making a relatively minimalist looking set. Fucking brilliant. TNG is one of my favorite shows of all time and I don't even like any other Star Trek
