I think the way to go, if you are to do the gender change, is to actually lean into femininity. Which, beyond costume and haircuts, is the wider problem with the way they did a female Doctor. Just ignoring whether or not they should have done the change, they did fuck all with the gender change. The Doctor turning into a woman should both affect the character and create new story opportunities. Yet, there is no adjusting to or even curiosity about the change on the part of the Doctor; there is no femininity to the incarnation; there is now different approach to issues etc. etc. General terrible writing and bad acting aside, the 13th Doctor fails as the gender change is that shallow in motivation and execution as to underlyingly feel-off.
