Show Tormund has that Nicholonian parking spaces kind of hairline and is bald in the back. Stannis and Roose and Tywin are all noticeably balding. Bronn was balding. I feel like HotD relies on wigs a lot. That's partially down to the fact that a much higher proportion of the main characters are Valryians, but Game of Thrones seems to have asked more of it's actors. They pretty much made most of them grow their hair out even if doing so would look bad because that's how men wore their hair in Medieval Europe. On HotD they just throw a wig on everybody and call it a day. It's not something you really notice until somebody brings it up, but it's definitely a quirk of this show

The dragons are the fire superweapon and the Others are the ice superweapon. Both will make life worse for everyone. I don't know that I agree that the fantasy is the worst element, but you are spot on in your assessment that it should be left a mystery. I don't really need an explanation for why magic suddenly returned to the world or how Melisandre is able to raise the dead and queef evil smoke babies. I don't mind that those elements exist in the story, but they need to be used sparingly and they should never be the main focus. But GRRM is leaning way too hard into it with the whole Euron anime villain plot and time travelling Bran. I hate both of those things. I don't mind Bran being a tree wizard, but if that's going to be the case he needs to take the narrative role of the wizard and be a side character who helps advance the plot when needed or deliver advice to the actual main character. Everyone likes Gandalf and Dumbledore, but making either of those two characters the protagonist makes for a boring story.

What GOT does wrong is do a half-assed explanation of most things, but can't really go much further. This pretty much destroys any suspension of disbelief. The shittiest instance (and best example) of this is the faceless men; We get the explanation that they take the form of their disguise through surgically taking the faces off corpses , and they get years of training. but how do they make these look realistic and not like some silence of the lambs abomination? How do the assassins gain the voice of their disguise? How do they change their physical bodies and frames to resemble the person they are disguised at?... Its just ninja skillz and magic yo' ... thats it , no more questions. I think GRRM has written himself into a corner with these magical elements as among other issues, he has just opened himself up to many , many plotholes.

But yeag, there's definitely a balance you have to strike between accuracy and modern taste. If everybody had ugly haircuts people would genuinely like the show less. Where I do give GOT credit is that, even if the styles weren't historically accurate, they did seem to put some thought into it. Generally the lower down the social ladder you go, the longer and more unruly the hair gets. Most of the hoity-toity noblemen have short cropped and well groomed hair, whereas the people who spent most of their time on the rode or outdoors had longer, nastier looking hair. It's just a way for them to communicate visually who the character is and what they're all about without the need for exposition. Jaime is a pompous and conceited rich kid with a high opinion of himself, so his hairstyle looks well kept and almost modern. The other members of the Kingsguard have short clipped hair, but it's a lot more basic. Then you have characters like Bronn and the Hound and the Wildlings who clearly could care less about appearances so their hair is long and unruly. Then you have characters like Jon and Ned who aren't necessarily concerned with vanity, but they're still stately and and have an air of nobility, so the show splits the difference and gives them hair that's longer like the the poorer characters, but also well groomed like the fancy characters. It's neither practical nor accurate, but it sends a clear message to the viewer
