Most of the runtime is political maneuvering and character interaction, with the space battles themselves being setpieces or a grand-scale representation of some sort of political clash. Lots of classical music. Lots of characters; you might not remember most of their names but they're largely memorable enough that you recognize their voice or look. Refreshingly, it shows the positives and negatives of multiple styles of government. Beyond that, the story itself is pretty good, but it is a slow burn that takes place over 100+ episodes. It's also pretty based as a show. Straight up shows (((Terrans))) being degenerates manipulating society from the shadows only to get outed once they get too brazen. That's barely a spoiler, the instant you see them it's clear what will happen with them.

I watched a few episodes of the new adaptation and it's honestly overhated.The character designs are faggier but there are some nice visual elements too (some of the uniforms and locations etc).In terms of plot it's VERY faithful to the books, probably too much; it strictly re-adapts them rather than simply remaking the old series. That said, the classic anime took some liberties and expanded some plotlines with fanfiction but it generally had a purpose, like making some characters or factions more relatable or elaborating on specific plot threads. As a result, the new one is slimmer and the pacing is tighter, and it mostly works well (but I still think some episodes were straight up better in the OAV, like the one with the farmers). In the end it's a good way to re-experience the story with a different coat of paint, shame it feels less "classy" overall.

The series doesn't give a definitive answer but there's various moments when characters go around in debating each other. So you can make up your own mind. The series is a backdrop for political debates. And there's obvious parallels to some real empires in history. There's also the fair share of shady third parties who play behind the shadows just like the real world.
