Another change from the theatrical cut to the Criterion version - the former has a fade from Mishima writing at his desk to the 'box room' scene that starts the last third of the Runaway Horses segment, the scene where the walls collapse away the the police rush in. Transition that suggests the scene as taking place inside his head. In the Criterion version, it's a hard cut and the timing's different again as a result.>>216019402I do.>>216019508I'm planning to make a subtitle file with the translations combined for side-by-side comparison, yes, it'll go up with the translation notes when I put it all on Soulseek.>>216019578Ditto for separate subtitle files, I know some people will have the film downloaded already. >>216020239Correct
>>216019779But why Schrader's film? Better to promote the stuff Mishima or Japan made on him like Conflagration. Jus cos he cast big stars doesn't mean it's a stilted, disjointed stagey thing banking on production design and isolated ideas/moments like flashcards. Nothing meaningful was said other than reenactment of cliff notes or coffee table book type of Mishima primer. Like his ultra-nationalism is presented from a distance, nothing about how it compensates or solves his sense of being the other, with letting him be part of mainstream in the company of other men, and if this changed anything other than some cultish power fantasy
One of the stories in the movie hasn't been translated into English yet and rather than doing that and being a savior he just transliterated the movie...
you guys are dragging this for too long, too boring for such a capable person like me
>>216020512sybau timlet
sex with harper.
>>216020239This one goes a bit further than localisation. Entire sections of narration talk about different subjects to the Japanese-language script. Schrader was directing by proxy to the extent he demonstrably doesn't even know what his cast are saying, I'll give a concrete example. In the director's commentary, he says there's a moment during the interrogation in Runaway Horses where the actor looks up to get a cue from one of the crew members, and he had to insert a scream in the background audio to make it look like he's reacting or something. Except that isn't what he's doing at all, it occurs during the clause "あそこで俺と", "over there", and the actor is nodding into the middle distance to gesture that the university dojo is "somewhere over there", in the vicinity of the prison (the line is "We could have been having a pleasant kendo match over there"). He also insists Criterion digitally recolour the cliff scene at the end of Runaway Horses a pleasing shit-bronze to try and make it look like the sun's about to come up, whereas if he read the freaking book as he said he did and remembered it, he'd have remembered that it's precisely the point that Iinuma comes out to the clifftop to find there is no sparkling sea or rising sun waiting for him to sacrifice himself in a picture-perfect scene, he has to commit seppuku anyway, and as he does so, the vision of the rising sun blazes before his eyes in his death agony - it's Mishima doing an 'ideal triumphing over the material' thing, the strength of Iinuma's noble patriotic sentiment is so great it's rewarded in the world of the novel by the transformation of his experience into one that transcends meagre reality.

>>216020715Probably some western.
>>216020715flyin dutchman wit hot bitch ava gardner
>>216020762muh dik
>>216020632That's what the theatrical version depicts and Schrader seems to have forgotten the visual storytelling of his own movie in the decades that have elapsed since. It's him doing a bad Ridley Scott. It's major deconstruction of auteur theory time. Me doing this translation is less about figuring Paul Schrader's artistic intent and more about figuring Chieko Schrader's artistic intent since she wrote the words that are coming out of the actors' mouths and to date English-language viewers have never gotten even an approximation of the experience of what it is she is having them say because it's been plastered over with some yankified business about "fragile plants" and whathaveyou. People call the movie "directed and written by Paul Schrader" when he didn't even write what the actors are saying. Yeehaw.
>>216020715the best lensed technicolor film? broken arrow. the best technicolor film? probably dodge city
>>216020806good joint
When did this general get taken over by Gen Alphas? Most of you talk like illiterate primary school children now compared to even just three years ago when I posted "Pierre.">>216020412I actually agree with you in a lot of ways, the film's only useful as a first introduction to Mishima for westerners, it's not any kind of an in-depth look and Ogata is unfortunately miscast, but it's a decent cult classic all the same. I haven't seen Conflagration and would like to. Part of why I felt Chieko Schrader's script deserved an English translation is I feel it digs below the cultish power fantasy, which the official English subs does not do. Chieko Schrader's script focuses more on the discontinuity between Mishima's inner world and his outer world, his drives vs. the time and place he was born into, more precisely his attempts to enforce his own agency after an upbringing that has denied him just that and getting sidetracked deeper and deeper into writing himself into a suicidal intellectual corner that climaxes in a triumph of art over humanity and finally, the death of the Japan Mishima idolised in tandem with himself, leaving only the rising sun as the symbol of a mysterious divine absolute, something like a Bataillean continuity as described in his last voiceover monologue. The official English subs just focus on him as this self-made 'great artist' muscleman /lit/ like to fawn over.

you have seen Mishima's very own short film, Patriotism, right? Its an adaptation of one of his short stories and he plays the main character. It was made in secret from the public and once finished he still hid it from the Japanese because he thought they would think "Oh, there we go, another of Mishima's pranks/ provocations." so instead he wanted it show to a western audience first which happened and the movie was well received in the western showrings. (altho the first time the movie was show in the west which was in France, a third of the audience was Japanese)One can easily interpret this film as a sort of test run for his seppuku. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO-w-cn-pJM&t=745s

Mishima was a bit of a faggot no? And not just in the homosexual sense. Why do people place importance in the actions of delusional schizos. Just because he had eccentric ideas and was stupid enough to carry them out doesn't make him interesting and warrant multiple films.

>>216022803He was caught in a particularly intense crux of the crisis of meaning in the latter half of the 20th century which makes him an interesting cipher for the human condition in this period, Richey Edwards is a similar case and also inspires fascination in some people. He essentially became an absurdist performance artist as a way to cope with experiences of abjection at an early age robbing life of the illusion of narrative sense for him, something humans tend to be very sensitive to due to our overspecialisation into semantic development as an animal species.
