You see, Avatar is the last bastion of old Hollywood (pre-2009) style blockbusters that had a big emphasis on visual effects. There are many people out there who flat out don't see the standard slop that's been churned out over the past 15 years but they will still see Avatar because at least Cameron can deliver an audio-visual treat and you will be getting your money's worth. Yes your redditor types see it, yes your Marveltards see it despite bitching about it having no cultural relevance, but there are many people who take their families to see Avatar around Christmas. My mom likes these movies a lot and she hasn't seen anything else in theaters for a long time because nothing interests her. She is part of the quiet but passionate masses who enjoy these movies. She got really upset when the whale got butchered in TWoW.
