Instead of simply retreading the boring old Dracula myth, Eggers could have done something genuinely different here. Think about it. A Moorish commander who gets driven out of Spain during the inquisition and seeks refuge in the depth of the Carpathian mountains. At the same time, he called up Djinn (islamic demons) to grant him eternal life, becoming a vampire in the process.

This approach would have been brilliant. The primal ecstacy and terrifying yet sexual desire Orlok represents from the perspective of a White woman would have made so much more sense. Also, the film could have served as a commentary on how European men for thousands of years have feared their women falling to the dark "other" represented by non-White men. Eggers could have given us a provocative masterpiece but instead chose to play it safe and boring. Yawn.
