>>218108691It's a mixture of things, firstly shit like picrel getting posted around, during early 4chan day, and raids on other sites (mostly for the lulz but it spread the name). The news would report shit like "the school shooter was known to frequent dangerous websites such as 4Chan." Middle-class soccer moms would hear about it and spread gossip amongst themselves exaggerating how scary 4Chan was, which then worked it's way into television and movies as a short hand for "scary hacker group" that normies could recognise. It's the same way that anyone that actually knows anything about firearms know what a magazine is, including the people that make movies, but normie audiences are used to it being call a "clip" so movies just keep using the word.4Chan is just the normie soccer mom version of the bogeyman.
