Picrel, this isn't an edit. It's literally how they transitioned the scene. One of the best shows recently to do 'subtle' visual storytelling/gags, rather than rely on shitty dialogue.

It was referencing a lot of VOY and the EMH's own struggles with his program, and the death of his own holo daughter once before, and the death of everyone he loved and cared about. He talks about how, since he's a hologram, he remembers everyone and everything that's happened in perfect clarity, as if it only just occurred. And because of this, and having to have such fresh and vivid memories of everyone he loves living and dying on him, ended up making him distant and bitter, because he didn't want to lose anyone else he cared about. He also explains that's why he's only grown close to Nala (the captain/principal of the academy), because her species is essentially biologically immortal due to how long lived they are (think guinan's people, but fun loving hoarding space gypsies) and she can relate to his struggles. The doctor raises her like a daughter, and when she comes back with him, she's not an autistic sperglord rock eater. She's mellowed out and her friends get sad that she's "normal" now, but are just happy to have her back. Even if she isn't giving people the glorious gift of a toothbrush, because it's 'neat' that organics need to use them. She was very toned down and mellowed out, replacing her 'tism with a bit of the EMH's snarky humor instead, for the last 2 episodes and it set her up nicely for S2 to be a normal "person".The show might get shit on a lot, but it was very respectful towards the EMH and of voyager. Nothing like LD & the psycho kims, if that's what you're worried about. Given that the EMH always has the best scenes and plots, it makes me wonder if Picardo has it written in his contracts somewhere that they can't fuck the EMH's character over. I love the guy and he never disappoints.
