Just marathoned two episodes of this, what do we think of it?
>>
>>221278956
it's cold outside
>>
>>221278956
sometimes very funny, sometimes very poor. everything after the OG series is awful
>>
>>221278956
high variance in episode quality.
My recommendation? Watch everything up until Back to Reality. KINO episode and the quality is still relatively high for everything.
>>
Great show. Audience laughter gets annoying though. And for a non-Brit, so does the intricate British slang. The book Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers is great too.
>>
>>221279072
personally i found the books a bit dark compared to the show
>>

Get back to watching it dumbass

It has blacks?

The audiobooks are, or were, on YouTube. Chris Barrie does the reading.
>>

it was made in a better time, I don't think race is even mentioned once
>>
>>221279231
proto-woke
>>
>>221279145
I never thought of Cat as black, even as a racist adult I have to be reminded that he's black.
What is Lister, anyway? He's darkish and has nappy hair but his mushy little face seems any other bong.
>>
>>221279231
There is an episode where we meet a younger Lister who accuses everything of being fascist (I cannot remember if there is also the accusation of things being racist), but it is played as younger Lister being in the wrong and older Lister is embarrassed.
>>
>>221279295
>What is Lister, anyway?
>the son of a Guyanese father[2] and Irish mother.
A Guyanese father is a bit vague given the breakdown of Guyana is
39.8% Indian
29.2% African
19.9% Mixed[a]
10.5% Indigenous
0.3% European[b]
0.2% Chinese
>>
>>221279310
Nope, just calling shit crypto fascist

The eighties was so optimistic. They didn't think the far future would notice race. Back to the future also came out in that decade.

I wish I could have experienced it. A time before mass immigration but with most modern conveniences.
>>
>>221278956
Depends which two episodes
S1 - A pilot season for some opera
S2-6 - The good shit
S7-8 - The downtrend
S10-12 - Not bad, skip lemons and samsara
>>
>>221279293
You realise the mere act of having a darkie on the screen is not politically charged, right?
Would you brand the very fabric of reality as woke?
>>
>>221278956
Series 1-6 are kino then co-creator Rob Grant left and it goes to shit.
>>
>>221279458
Demons and Angels and Back to Reality
>>
>>221279338
Okay, so he's kind of a true Heinz 57.
I am pretty racist, but casting eise, when it comes to randomized races I'm not very annoyed, he'd look stupid cast as a soldier helping Washington cross the Delaware, but once/if corporations start shooting people into orbit to mine asteroids it's probably gonna be all sorts of weird chimeric mixes, half Chinese half Congoid love children whose dads give 'em a break and put them on a crew, Indian Polack supervisors, kids of lolberts who bought Polynesian wives.

>>221278956
Funniest fucking show ever up to season VI. Authored by writing duo Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.

After that Rob Grant left leaving Doug Naylor to write and what were occasional crude jokes in the original series became unrestrained and fell flat a lot of the time without what later seems to have been Grant's moderation and more cerebral humour.

Actor Craig Charles who played Lister was accused of rape, (eventually acquitted), and was using crack in the intervening time. When the series came back with season VII, Chris Barrie, (Rimmer), was moving onto other shit, and the production dynamics had completely changed.

>>221279145
>>221279231
I remember not even really noticing Lister not being White for
years after I watched the show. Was too busy laughing to even care. Truly colour-blind moment in TV history where nobody cared afaik. Watching some interview with Danny John-Jules, (who played the Cat), where race is brought up with a some of the typical whining. It was retarded, seemed opportunistically retrospective, and totally out of place, despite being relatively mild by Woke Era standards. Like he had to really try hard to even shoehorn in some kind of racial victim shit at all for a show where the lead was non-White, and had an unforced, non-quota non-White majority main cast.

The original cat Frankenstein, the 'mother' of the cat race was a black cat. They got a Black guy to physically act like a (cool) cat. Seemed like the most perfectly normal thing in the world.

Just a well-cast talented troupe of funny actor fags, and funny writing. Not sure how much the timing plays into it working so well at the time, but a universe with no aliens, just the last human alive and a bunch of floating smeggin' rocks, fucking around wasting time, was a hilarious contrast to sci-fi at the time, with Star Trek TNG being the hot shit in that era.

Without a word of a lie, I'm never physically laughed out loud so fucking hard in my life than watching this show.

I know what you mean, some of the gags are just fucking perfect.

>...I couldn't buy it, then?
>>
People who grew up having Woke rainbow horseshit shoved down their throat might get triggered by the early season episode where they go to a parallel universe where there are female versions of themselves and Lister gets pregnant from literally fucking himself.

Hardly my favourite episode, even when old TNG does that kind of shit, but that kind of sex role reversal has been a thing in sci-fi and comedy since forever without it being about actual trannyism or literally gay shit, simply because there are a lot of jokes and opportunities for observational humour.

Not dissimilar to the episode where Lister and Rimmer swap bodies and the actors get to act like each other's character. Pretty standard shit. Wasn't political or gay-agenda driven at the time.

after all the hype, didn't find it translate as well as other crossovers like Are you being served, Bean, Only fools and horses, etc. Big Train would've done better. I can see it's amazing if everything else on TV sucked.

Would be the worst thing for them to do.

I know people are obsessed with closure, but we already know Listers destiny is to be a endlessly looping cycle keeping humanity alive, the show jumps between different crews as they encounter things and earth either isn't there, humanity is long dead or its an m-corp hellscape.

Series 1 and 2 : funny
Series 3 to 5: mixed bag
Series 6 and 7 : The Star Bug era. I like these seasons more than 3 - 5 overall. I feel like they go back to the comedy of series 1 and 2.
Series 8: Back to Red Dwarf . Alright season. Also the end of the original run.
Red Dwarf: Back to earth = Three episode story arc. It's alright.
Series 10 to 12 : I haven't really watched any of these. I feel series fatigue from this point on.

Overall: Great, if you stop at series 9. The rest are there if you want more?

Series 8 ended on a cliffhanger and the show got cancelled.

"Series 9" was a three part special. It has nothing to do with s8. For context, the entire series is about the futuristic crew returning to Earth and having sci-fi adventures along the way.

Well the specials are about the main characters instantly teleporting to 21st century earth. They then engage in extremely meta activities like meeting the actors that play themselves, and killing their own script writer. Overall it's just...cringe. It doesn't fit. It's someone with no ideas left absolutely grasping for laughs but it isn't even particularly funny.

It's still implied, Rimmer in prison doesnt have the H and yet in S10 he does, because OG Rimmer came back, saved them from the virus and sent living Rimmer off to be the new Ace while he stayed with Lister, so he has the H again.

People also sleep on the promised land feature length episode, that talk about Rimmer being the moon to Listers sun and providing moonlight was touching when you grew up with the pair.

>I can't watch a show where the robots and holograms get old and fat

That's how I felt about Star Trek: Piccard and whatever the fuck that last Star Trek TV series was. I thought Red Dwarf did an alright job covering up Kryton's age. The excuse for the aging Hologram was that it ages with Lister to keep his sanity in check. The computer brought back Rimmer originally because Rimmer was the person who Lister had the most contact with on Red Dwarf. The joke was that Rimmer was there to keep Dave's sanity in check . The Red Dwarf could only generate one holographic crew member at any given time. Red Dwarf is one of those series where you could stop at series 8.

Yeah, amazing how much it doesn't matter unless some annoying Woke faggot trips over themselves trying to MAKE it matter.

There are numerous examples of race, faggot, and even tranny shit in old TV and film that literally nobody gave a single fuck about at the time.

Hell, give 'Predestination' (2014) a watch starring Ethan Hawke. That's an adaption of a story written in the fucking 50's by Heinlein. Interesting and almost inevitable sci-fi story that needs to go the tranny angle. Practically impossible to adapt to film, but actually a decent effort.

I'm even disappointed they didn't do the tranny shit with Switch in the original Matrix film, (originally planned and cast to be male IRL and female in the Matrix - based on the residual self-image thing). It's sci-fi, so literally nobody would have given a crap at the time because everyone back then knew delusional faggots who believed they were women in men's bodies existed. Doesn't mean you have to agree their shit is real IRL for the purposes of a sci-fi movie.

Lister not being White is no big deal because non-Whites exist and one could easily be working as a shiftless space bum on a mining ship. Roddenberry was all about the idea of different races working together in the future, but would you be shocked if you stepped out of a time machine and found the future full of only mongrel brownoid mongrel Goobacks? You know people right now who'd fuck someone of a different race, not to mention quadroons and octoroons. Seems pretty inevitable. More likely that them being all full-blood Ace-of-Spades nig faggot genius scientists in the future or some unlikely Woke delusion like that.

> Rimmer came back, saved them from the virus and sent living Rimmer off to be the new Ace while he stayed with Lister, so he has the H again.
But why is he still a neurotic loser? It can't be the same Rimmer because his personality hasn't developed at all
>>
>>221290715
Because he was a different kind of ace like the episode says, still a neurotic mess.
>>
>>221282188
10/10 would date and wife and protect and provide for. They fucked up big time with the character though, and it wasn't just her either that season had some of the worst episodes generally. It's only tolerable because there are a couple of good ones and that Chloe Annett is in it.

Yeah, that is why I say it feels like a mixed bag. series 3 starts off with some strong episodes. But I feel like there were some that I would skip open. Series 5 also has a lot of worthy episodes too. But some I found to be skip worthy. I don;t know why, but once they got to the Star Bug series, I feel like the comedy felt more in line with series 1 and 2. I do like the missing Red Dwarf and the story arc on board the StarBug.

>Starbug series were obviously formulaic, but in the best possible way. Seems like the writers wanted to streamline things a bit so they could work less hard, but everything went better than expected.

yeah, that about sums it up. But the smaller location of the Star Bug and the 'scrappier' production really put more emphasis on the actors and their characters. Some of the best comedy moments came out of these two seasons. It has that same tone as the first two seasons, before the budget became much bigger and they went through a lot of set and visual redesigns. Series 3 to 5 are not bad. Some episodes just didn't land well with me, while others did.

I got a photo with them all at a con a couple of years ago. Nice guys. Most popular people at the con despite most of the Lord of the Rings cast being there. You can tell it was Liverpool that’s for sure. They hosted a Q&A panel for about 40 minutes during the day too and that was hilarious. All the stories they were able to tell and how easily they riffed on each other. Chris did impressions of the rest of the cast that had me dying of laughter.

glad to hear that, anon (and yeah Chris voices them all on the audiobooks, he does a cracking job).

i've heard people say Craig Charles is a bit of a diva, and Danny John-Jules punched a binman or something (oh no), but they always come off nice even with how fans can be.

i had this video as a kid, it was the first time i'd witnessed a convention. clearly very different to how they are nowadays:

There were only two channels that I can think of that aired Red Dwarf in Canada. One was a PBS affiliate from Washington State. They would have pledge drives like this:

comedy show etc. but i DID like the storylines/characters, sometimes they were emotional/serious, this moment was always weird.

they had zero problem killing people before, characters who'd never show up again. their own evil clones or parallel universe selves, who presumably lived full lives? yeah, kill the lot of 'em.

that's actually a good solution to the series 8 conundrum.

Lister is prone to have excessive levels of sympathy for other lifeforms, even when they're droids and computers and stuff. Maybe it's in character.
I agree it's a bit of a reach he would pick this moment to be principled about killing a Simulant.
