I suspect in reality the lives of people like Hiroyama have significantly less joy and moments of beauty than what he experiences in the course of the film.

Stuff like a beautiful woman appreciating his music, listening to one of his cassettes with him in the van, and then kissing him on the cheek. Or him having the touching encounter with a man dying of cancer at the bridge. In real life you could go 30+ years waging and not have stuff like this happen. In my experience these small moments of personal connection just... don't happen in real life.

I think he was trying his best to live a stoic lifestyle but it was still taking a heavy toll on him. Like if he were fully left alone then he could survive with his simplistic lifestyle but any intrusions of reality into the routine he had made for himself really uncovered that it was built on shaky foundations.

The most realistic part was when he had to cover his coworker's full shift after the guy quit without notice. That's the reality of working jobs like these. You can put your heart and soul into it but your efforts are ultimately for nothing and 99% of the people who work in and around you (rightfully) don't give a shit about you or the work.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to live a simple life. The main issue was that he had his head in the clouds and was ignoring his family like his dying father.

i worked as a janitor but it wasn't in nice places like he cleaned. it was at like vfws where people shit themselves before getting into the toilet or you'd have bloody underwear in the garbage cans. one time a toilet was filmed to the brim with shit after a party. i can't be happy at a job like that.

In the film the main character lives a life of self-imposed social isolation with no friends or contact with his family. He lives a rigid routine of attending his job as a public toilet cleaner and in his spare time he reads, tends to his plants and eats out at the same bar (alone).

The question is whether living this way is good or bad. In the film the character obviously has his own reasons for doing so and while he finds joy in his way of life, there are also glimpses into what might be interpreted as internal sadness or conflict around his lifestyle.
