A mental trial that John has to undergo while the ring is hovering right above him in the real world in the seconds as it decides whether John is fearless or not. That's why there's a Guardian giving John a therapy session. That's why there's no ring on John's finger after Hal's death. That's why it jumps between time periods. And that's why John has such a fucked up backstory: none of it is real.

The show is going with a post-crisis interpretation where Hal is a loner/drifter/cowboy. In some ways he’s a loser, but in no way is a loser at his job or superheroing.

The insecurity part of white culture only started becoming a thing with the introduction of the recent (10-20 years) of identity politics, where being a victim meant you had social capital (right or left it doesn't matter any more). But its been especially prevalent in black culture since at least the 60s. They as a community can never do anything wrong, every crime is a fault of the system and not their own, they are the authors of everything good, etc. The naked and should be obvious reality is that neither perspective is true, each culture has done its own share of harm and good both to itself and to other cultures, but particularly it is taboo to hold black culture accountable for its own flaws, while there's multiple academic, media, and other institutions demanding white accountability all the time.
