Anons thinking it was going to be an action film with traffic warden man going around shooting looters crack me up. Why would you even think that?

I know it's a shitty TV movie that somehow got cult status over one shot that has no relevance to the movie, but I really can't get over how every single British movie is so weak in technical terms. It's as if they are stuck in the 50s and never made any effort to use better techniques, effects, cameras, or anything new at all.
>>
>>222901504
There are some British filmmakers who do. Edgar Wright, Guy Ritchie, Danny Boyle or Christopher Nolan for example. But yeah, there's a certain unpolished feel to the vast majority of British filmmaking.
>>
>>222901504
Threads holds up pretty well as a "real movie" which could have been made for theaters instead imo. Or you'd only need some small tweaks to get it there.
The Day After, on the other hand, is really brought down by shitty made for TV aspects and terrible dialogue. Where it's like we're not even trying to have good believable performances from some of these actors, all we need is to get across the idea of what the lines should be

the cult status is from cultural nihilists on reddit who love fantasizing about the post apocalyptic stuff in the second half of the movie which is actually the least scientific shit in it

The Day After is better purely by virtue that it doesn't stray into dogshit speculating about the future and purely depicts the devastation in the immediate aftermath

Genuinely asking. Where do we draw the line? I guess it depends on the production

I know it's like saying "look at when retards talk about this" but go on r/movies whenever they talk about this crap and the entire discussion is about the end times stuff following the bombs
I legitimately don't understand people who fantasize about stressful shit, there was a huge trend 10 years ago of people making "Emergency Alert System Scenario" videos depicting global nuclear war or an apocalyptic meteor heading to Earth told through EAS broadcasts. it literally felt like the people making these were masturbating while editing them
>>222901261
hasn't Fukushima basically completely disproven the old model regarding lingering nuclear fallout and that longterm atmospheric effects are nearly nonexistent?
Carl Sagan basically made up nuclear winter but no one wants to admit it for fear that it'll make firing nukes a legitimate strategic option again
>>
>>222902211
No, you're a fucking retarded shill.

>>222901425

Shooting """looters""" or getting as far from nonwhites as possible is the biggest threat in burgerland states of emergency.
Perfect example, hurricane Katrina. Superdome became a 3rd world african tribal war zone to the point the military got helicoptered in to shoot the warlords. Outside of the dome, neighborhoods rallied together and lived on rooftops and shot wandering niggers on sight because every single one only showed up to rape and pillage. Better off plunking them from the end of the street instead of assuming it was one of the 1/10000 "good" ones before they came within hi-point shooting range.

The same people who like to play games with a post-apocalyptic setting, yet most of them are about zombies

>>222902175
All bar Nolan were already making glossy films before Nolan
Fucking Spaced has weirdly high production values not to mention Hot Fuzz, Lock Stock, Trainspotting.
>>
>>222902211
There's a subgenre of autismo who likes loud annoying things like EAS alerts, tornado sirens, and fire alarms. Something about controlling a loud warning signal to everyone else appeals to them. I don't think they get off to the apocalypse itself because they made those fake EAS alerts for every kind of emergency from floods and tornadoes to alien invasions.
>>
>>222902174
The UK was heavily nuked. The funny thing is the tests that inspired the film projected like a thousand more munitions hitting the UK than they show in the film. They didn't think people would believe it.
>>
>>222902051
>the post apocalyptic stuff in the second half of the movie which is actually the least scientific shit in it
To be fair, the information and computer models available in the 80s were greatly lacking compared to now. You can't really blame the filmmakers for that. The nuclear winter depicted in Threads was based on broadly accepted science at the time. Nuclear Winter: Global Consequences of Multiple Nuclear Explosions was published while Threads was in production. Unlike now, they had no way of knowing that Carl Sagan was talking out of his ass.
>>
>>222902211
>hasn't Fukushima basically completely disproven the old model regarding lingering nuclear fallout and that longterm atmospheric effects are nearly nonexistent?
the oil fires in Kuwait during the Gulf War disproved it 20 years prior to Fukushima. tons of scientists insisted this would have a massive global effect on temperature and literally nothing happened
>>222902329
yeah even at the time tons of environmental scientists called this shit out for being too simplistic and ignoring geographic factors and rainout of smoke. I think the theory was well meaning but it veered too far into political advocacy
the more I learn about Carl Sagan the more he comes off like a massive self-aggrandizing faggot. No wonder they picked NGT as his successor for Cosmos
>>

The KGB developed the concept of nuclear winter in legitimate European scientific circles before Sagan ever mentioned it. They used their shill scientists working alongside real scientists in western Europe to build the idea up and give it scientific legitimacy in the hopes that it would scare Western citizens into demanding their politicians become less aggressive with their nuclear development and deployment programs. The USSR at the time was already slipping behind the West technologically, so subversive activities were seen as a hedge to slow America's steady improvement of its weapons systems.

But the nuclear winter idea itself languished in academic circles without any real notice from the public for years. Then Sagan discovered it and started talking about it on TV and the idea took off like wildfire, exceeding the Soviets' wildest expectations. It was probably a contributing factor for arms limitation talks in the late 70s. I don't think Sagan was a foreign asset, he just happened to be the unwitting critical spark that ignited a larger debate among Westerners.

The least realistic part was the rape-baby actually being born in the first place. That kid would've been toast in the first trimester with the fallout and mass starvation.
>>
>>222901589
Because what might seem like necessary polish to other audiences comes across as inauthenticity to us. Directors like Ken Loach (Kes), Shane Meadows (This is England), Mike Hodges (Get Carter), Alan Clarke (Scum), have all made classic British films that do not have that Hollywood finish, yet exude the national character all the same.
>>
>>222902174
>forgotten how to farm or fix machinery
No, they "forgot" how to import fuel because there's no more fuel for them to import, and they had to eat all the draft animals to survive, so they're being "retarded" and farming by hand.
>>
>>222901589

Yeah, undoubtedly. They add a grit to the films you don't really get elsewhere. It always cracks me up watching yanks talking about some gritty masterpiece and it's still just Hollywood dolls doing slightly meaner stuff than usual.

Not an argument, buddy. Literally every single relevant person from your little island came to be successful by moving to America. There are no exceptions, not even one.

They should remake Threads with a high budget but keep all the disturbing stuff.
>>
>>222903033
No one's going to watch it because everyone feels like they're living in the end times
>>
>>222902175
In that case, Kubrick was American and I am pretty sure almost all his films were made in the UK, you'd hardly be able to say he had poor production. I always felt that British movies always had the production quality but never the budget and when they get a big budget behind them they're at least as good if not better than Hollywood
