As far as capeshit plots go this isn't even that far fetched but Nolan's insistence on making capeshit "grounded" and realistic and pretending this is serious dramatic stuff makes it comical. Add his autistic alien dialogue and the stilted acting and you have a comedic masterpiece.

Surely it would have occurred to him that they could eventually dig their way out over the course of six months. The tunnels would have been full of maintenance and construction equipment, so it's not like they would have been just stuck with hand tools or bare hands (honestly even with just shovels, a bunch of relatively physically fit adult men could eventually dig their way out by working around the clock).

A Batman where the gadgets mostly made sense (unlike bat shark spray) and the villains were just normal, crazy people was interesting.
