I think it was around Covid when “cinephilia” became a normie thing and you started having stuff like basic girls on TikTok posting about The Piano Teacher and Possession. You can tell it’s a fashion trend because the reviews on there are all little quips designed for social media traffic, not really thought out or insightful things about the movie

despite a lot of letterboxd users being annoying it strikes perfect chord between braindead super casual users of goodreads that rate Hunger games above Proust but they're not as bad as rateyourmusic users that rate their obscure bullshit albums where thewhole thing sounds like random construction noises above everything that sounds good

I wish users of those 2 websites were more like letterboxd ones, you can still find lots of cool shit by following peoples accounts and lists, goodreads and rym are useless for that

i just use it as an easy way to log and maybe check out the overall scores. never gave a shit about the people or reviews on it
