He also came up with the stories for the first four Indiana Jones movies, and did a lot of technical shit in the fields of sound, effects, CG, cameras etc. Star Wars is an amalgamation of a whole bunch of different inspirations -- Samurai films, Joseph Campbell, Buck Rogers, all of that. But it's also so much more. Its real genius is in combining and refining all of these ideas into something that feels simultaneously classic yet fresh, old fashioned yet new. His deep knowledge of cinema and the power of editing also really helped. It wasn't a fluke, he wasn't some moron, yes he had help but everybody does.
