My friend once wondered if it's taking the piss at Bazin because he thought cinema, technology wise, is developing towards something that already exists, or something along those lines

>"Take the piss" may be a reference to the related (and dated) idiomatic expression piss-proud, which is a vulgar pun referring to the morning erection that a man may have when he awakens or may be caused by a full bladder pressing upon nerves that help effect an erection. This could be considered a "false" erection, as its origin is physiological, not psychosexual, so in a metaphoric sense, then, someone who is "piss-proud" would suffer from false pride, and taking the piss out of them refers to deflating this false pride, through disparagement or mockery. As knowledge of the expression's metaphoric origin became lost on users, "taking the piss out of" came to be synonymous with disparagement or mockery itself, with less regard to the pride of the subject.

>>Photography could have been invented in color. Colors existed, but here’s the thing: On the eve of the 20th century technology decided to reproduce life. So we invented photography. But since morals were still strong, and we would take everything from life, even its identity, we mourned this killing. And it’s with the mourning colors, black and white, photography was born.
It's a poetic musing taken out of context.
Not unlike the Steve Albini McDonald's quote now that I think about it.

I wish Evan kept playing the organ in the band and not switched to piano only, pretty sure he's playing one of those 70s Ace Tone organs there, love that sound. Should I buy Interstellar's blu-ray? I really like the film, but my circle of friends is extremely critical of Nolan (they're all very pretentious cinephiles) and I feel like they'll mock me if they see that film on my shelf. That's like saying if we lost ability to make sound films, actors could still do live voice overs while the film was being screened and therefore they wouldn't technically be films with sounds.

One of the best movies of the 20s, possibly of all time.

I disliked the lesbian shit, if Lydia was a man it would've been a better film and a more powerful message since, you know, MeToo was a movement that empowered women against predatory males in positions of power.
>>
>>223700094
I think the lesbian shit enhances the film, if it was a male pred the movie would have been undubitably woke and wouldn't have the same impact. It's also based on the real life Lydia Tár, so it's about a real female predator lol
>>
>>223700230
Holy shit, I didn't know Lydia was actually real.

Something that's kind of annoying regarding older (pre 70s at least) films is that they're very predictable when it comes to anti-hero/villainous protagonists.

Breaking Dawn is pretty incredible. I have now completed Twilight. They really got away from vampires sparkling in the direct sunlight after the first two movies.
I quiet enjoy watching complete series like this in quick order, and seeing how wacky they get. My favorite part of halloween.

It's one of the greatest of the 2020s. Arthouse on a massive budget. It's really a metafilm and if you don't pick up on the historical allegories related to the birth of cinema you probably won't like it.

It's retardmaxxing tasteless awkward heap of nonsense that puts into question the mere notion of what is taste in cinema...

in the last 10 years or so I've noticed a lot more people insisting on using the term "moving image" which I find very goofy

that's a uniquely striking shot but there's a very strong attention to landscape and architecture throughout the whole series. dunno if you're familiar with M.R. James whose work inspired most of the episodes but his whole thing was stuffy old scholars bumbling around the English countryside and old churches. I usually end up revisiting at least a couple of them this time of year

Ford is himself Anti-American. While also being very American. It's called dialectics, you see.
>>
>>223708931
>Ford is himself Anti-American
No he isn't. Someone who's Anti-American couldn't make Young Mr. Lincoln, The Long Gray Line, etc.
>>
>>223708964
Not only not Anti-American, but was borderline a lost causer at times with his affection for the South.

You merely reveal your own ignorance and spiritual sterility.
>>
>>223708964
I agree. But someone who's strictly pro-American wouldn't make Sergeant Rutledge, They Were Expendable or The Searchers. You see what I'm getting at?
>>
>>223709021
I just hate people that express extremely simple ideas in deliberately obscure ways. By doing so, they merely reveal their own incapacity to be concise and insightful, and their need to hide behind a wall of pedantry to avoid any criticism directed at their ideas. No one can criticize you if they can't understand you.
>>
Well, this was weird, seems like I haved 2 versions of "Trop tôt⁄trop tard", but one looks incredibly awful as if it was recorded from a cinema, and the other plain clean. Which one is more soulful?

>>223709046

Yes, but I disagree that self-criticism amounts to anti-Americanism, let alone provides grounds for saying that Ford himself was anti-American.
