I know Harry's kinda stupid but I think the malice for that kind of action only makes sense in the context of strictly hating Malfoy and it doesn't make sense in the context of a current/former lover, even if the relationship had gone sour at some point prior.Again, I know everyone kinda loves the idea of it, but how would you fit it in at that point? Then in book 6 she's panicking because the whole death eater thing is really not what she wanted but she's too deep now and can't get out. It's pretty easy to write that conflict to sour their relationship enough to cause the sectumsempra scene thanks to Harry misunderstanding her and not being aware of her struggles and that can be the turning point for her eventual redemption.
