How is this a 92% on rotten tomatoes? I tuned out the moment those 'scientists' started placing bets in the control room
It's funny
>>224164580This movie blows.>Wow, did you ever notice that people who have sex in horror movies end up dying? So heckin' meta.About as reddit as a movie can get.
>>224164580Why would this turn you off the movie?
>>224164580>>224164625It's rated highly because despite stating from the very beginning that it's satire, it puts every bit of effort into its delivery and effects as though it were genuine. Also, the system purge at the very end is one of the most kino moments in all of cinema.
>>224164652Its way too pretentious. Like "hah, yoi thought it was just a regular slasher or occult flick? We know what your expectations are, lets have characters do things to openly mock those stupid thoughts, you, the viewer, had for this movie. Stupid fucking idiot"
>>224164580WooditThe movie is literally worst than a B-Horror movie slop like Flying Shark Vs Volcano Tarantula
>>224164580I think it's because most people confused liking the idea of the movie with actually liking the movie itself
Its a good flick. Anons just do that thing where they performatively hate something because reddit liked it
>>224164625>>224165545It's kind of incredible that even in this website's deaththroes, that's all you fags can think about.Last post on the site before it finally shuts down is going to probably be complaining about reddit.
>>224164625It’s Reddit but it was 2011 Reddit when they had things like r/niggers
>>224165575Why would those things be mutually exclusive? Why can't I like the movie and its concept?
>It's kind of incredible that even in this website's deaththroes, that's all you fags can think about.>Last post on the site before it finally shuts down is going to probably be complaining about reddit.
>>224164580>i hate funloser
>>224164580Great movie. Zero rewatchability factor
First piece of media that ripped off SCP blatantly.
>>224165622>Zero rewatchability factorHard disagree. There's a lot of cool shit the second time around like seeing how the different items in the basement would have summoned the different monsters or just how the general movie could have played out. Lot of "blink and you miss it" moments in the facility too.
>>224165439>It's rated highly because despite stating from the very beginning that it's satire, it puts every bit of effort into its delivery and effects as though it were genuine.Yes, of course it's satire. The problem is that it's so heavy-handed and in your face, when it's not even remotely a clever or novel concept. If any movie ever insisted on itself, it was this one.>Also, the system purge at the very end is one of the most kino moments in all of cinema.I've heard people say this, but all I see is just CGI slop with no weight or tangibility. It's pretty far removed from Evil Dead or The Thing.>>224165507Indeed, it's so far up it's own ass.>OMG, we're so heckin' subversiveThis is a movie for redditors and youtube video essayists. It's the worst, I hate it.
>>224164580>>224164625So this board is still low IQ. This movie is packed with occultism and symbolism. That's the whole purpose.
>>224165605xhe's right tho
4chan is the last place that still thinks reddit matters at all any.ore except as way to make googles shit search engine actually give you an answer to something
>>224165603Because it was like a Netflix movie before Netflix movies were a thing.Cool idea, mid execution, zero replay value
>>224165702I don't understand how what you said connects with what I asked.I liked the movie. I liked the concept.I rewatched the movie with friends just so I could rewatch it again. Why the fuck is some anonymous jackass trying to convince me that I'm not allowed to like both the movie and its concept at the same time?
>>224164580apparently it was supposed to have some sort of tie into the left 4 dead franchise at some point down the road, idk if that was supposed to manifest as another movie or some sort of expansion for the game, but valve are gay and killed the l4d franchise after the second game
For as much as I disliked this at the time, I look at what the horror genre has become since 2011, and it doesn't seem as bad.
>>224164580>I turned outHeh I bet you did, fag
>>224165694Yes, of course it is. This movie telegraphs its entire plot within the first five minutes, there are absolutely no surprises, everything is so painfully predictable. The problem is that it thinks it's being subversive and clever, when this type of horror commentary had been a tired cliche for decades at this point.I remember Spoony of all people being one of the few reviewers back then who called out how trite this movie is. It baffled me how much acclaim it received.
>>224165683>The problem is that it's so heavy-handed and in your face, when it's not even remotely a clever or novel concept.I still don't get the problem. It's not trying to be subtle. You're asking for nuance from a movie that's not trying to be nuanced.
>all these niggers pseudposting just to try to dunk on the reddit flickkek
>>224164580Unc here. You had to be there. It came out at a time where horror movies were taking themselves wayyyyy too fucking seriously. So to see something so meta and self deprecating was really refreshing >FUCK YOU, YOU LITTLE JAPNESE GIRLS, FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
>>224165739>Why the fuck is some anonymous jackass trying to convince me that I'm not allowed to like both the movie and its concept at the same time?Convince you of what, you asked me a question, I answered. You can like your Reddit-tier, Joss Whedon, mid movies like most people, that doesn't change the fact that it's mid
>>224164580We don't analyze horror movies enoughThis film is a great example of why doing so is so rewarding
Me, I tuned out after the absurd motorcycle-bumping-into-an-invisible-wall scene. If anything can happen in your movie, then nothing can happen, if you know what I mean.
>>224165877>Convince you of what, you asked me a question, I answered. But you literally didn't.Even now you're just off ranting about reddit or or netflix or josh whedon, something like that actually explains anything.
>>224164625>mfw I survive a horror movie
>>224165902>If anything can happen in your movieAnon, they telegraphed that the forcefield was there in the beginning. They showed you the bird flying into it and dying. You literally just tuned out of the movie because you forgot the premise that was established 40 minutes earlier.
>>224165834This movie was widely praised for being a subversion of horror tropes, when this type of subversion and commentary were trite more than a decade before the film was even made. Even when Scream did it in the 90s it was trite.
>>224165912My first reply was to OP, you started crying about my comment, not the other way around
>>224165946Okay, but that doesn't answer why liking a movie and liking its concept are mutually exclusive.
>>224165871If you thought "le heckin' clever subversion" was cool back then, but only started hating it when everyone else did, you're an NPC. It sucked back then, and it sucks now.
The movie is an indictment of the horror audience. We are repulsed by the jaded voyeurism of the control room staff while we eat popcorn wondering who will die first and when we will see some tits. We champion the monsters and deify them for their creative kill count. We are the “old gods” that must be placated by the adherence to horror tropes or we will rampage and destroy the filmmakers’ work with bad reviews and poor box office. The ultimate irony is how we cheer for the finale, when it is the filmmakers playing out their revenge against us!
>>224165963Because that's literally Netflix's entire business model. Make a movie with a great concept. Release a trailer. People like the idea of the movie and watch it. Watch the movie. It's mid, but people are still hooked on it's idea. Most forget they ever watched it or it ever existed unless you bring it up.That's this movie
woah dude....did u ever notice the virgin girl always survives the horror moobie? How has nobody noticed this b4???
>>224165945Yes, we get it, every horror movie ever is subversive, all the way back to Hitchcock's Psycho. Do you find any irony that your criticism is even more trite than Scream?
>>224165944Me think you are overthinking a rather meh piece of exploitation cinema. Personally, I'd rather watch The Exorcist/the Shining/the Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Rosemary's baby/Psycho/Carrie/Suspiria etc for the 10th time than waste my time on underwhelming stuff.
>>224166055Nobody needs the cliff notes interpretation. Understand that what you've written is totally condescending and facile, and it's exactly why this movie comes off as so smug and annoying. Nobody with a brain was cheering for the finale in this movie.
>>224165871aint no way early/late 2000s film is unc status for movies
>>224166094No, not every horror movie is subversive, where did you even get that from?>Do you find any irony that your criticism is even more trite than Scream?Clearly it's not, because this movie was praised by both audiences and critics at the time, so being a detractor would then be novelty.
>>224166180>No, not every horror movie is subversive, where did you even get that from?I wasn't arbitrarily picking psycho. I picked that one because it's famous for killing off the expected heroine within the first 5 minutes. The fact is that in order to keep things scary, the majority of horror movies are usually trying to do something different or break some sort of rule to keep the audience on their toes to varying to degrees of how much the story itself acknowledges it. I like Cabin in the woods because its comedy is centered mostly around how hamfistedly it forces the characters to be as stereotypical as possible despite them recognizing the tropes. Doesn't even need to be the first movie ever that does it, I still think it's funny watching it
>>224166055Funny Games, Cannibal Holocaust and Salo already did this in the 70s, 80s and 90s, this was a cliche at this point.
>>224166292Okay but who else did it in the 2010s?
>>224165507Not really. The flick was pre-woke. The angle was more that the horror movie “tropes” feel forced cause they actually are by the guys in the control room who need to hit certain archetypes in order for their sacrifice to be acceptable.
>>224165821>this type of horror commentary had been a tired cliche for decades at this pointName 5 similar flicks from the 60’s-00’s
>>224165871Nah it was in the era of schlock like the 10th SAW flick and My Bloody Valentine 3D. If anything horror movies had gone really over the top with comedic elements in this era.
>>224165902This was the best scene
>>224165945It’s not a subversion of the tropes it’s a reframing of the tropes. It’s explaining WHY the tropes are there in this greater meta context of appeasing the Old Gods
>>224166290Sure, but the subversion in Psycho actually adds weight to the story, since nobody is safe, so it makes every scene all the more tense. It's not just subversion for subversion's sake. If Psycho were like Cabin In The Woods, it would have characters ham-fistedly saying shit like "Wow, I can't believe that bright young woman got killed. I bet you didn't expect that, huh? I guess nobody is safe in this story."Also, Psycho actually was subversive, unlike Cabin In The Woods. The problem here isn't that it's subversive, it's that it presents itself as subversive when it's not, everything it subverts had already been done long before and was cliche at the time. I wouldn't have a problem with the film being unoriginal if it weren't so smug and preachy about it, as well as if it weren't praised to high heavens when it came out. This was the "elevated horror" of its time. A film that thinks itself better than its genre, even though it's lesser in every way.
>>224166111>Me think you are overthinkingOverthinking what? All I did was remember what happened earlier in the movie and connect that to that was currently happening.
>joss whedon filters /tv/ chudsMany many such cases.
>>224164625Leave it to /tv/ to only focus on the sex part
>>224166373>Salo>Cannibal Holocaust>Funny Games>Scream>Martyrs
I have subversion fatigue. At this point, a straightforward, honest horror movie would be more of a subversion of the genre.
>>224166480What I mean is that a movie either works or it doesn't. For instance, I doubt that many people need to argue for hours to 'prove' that Cube or Saw work.
>>224164580The Apartment in the City when?
>>224165507They could actually say aloud all of this about you, anon, and be right. You are a stupid bastard, and you deserved it.
>>224166373I'll name two that matter. Friday the 13th Part 6 and April's Fools Day. Both films are very meta, but the horror genre had been playing on these cliches all throughout its history. That's part of what makes Whedon's half assed critique seem so superficial, as if it's simply served up to an audience that doesn't know any better (which is the case). Also, Whedon's film is made out of spite for horror films, where these other films actually love the genre, and still play as horror films.
>>224166698nta, but you seem upset. Should I call you a WAHmbulance?
>>224166579That's pretty self fulfilling logic right there. You're relying on consensus or lack therefore of to make a position
