Both the PS1 and PS2 were massive successes so every third party had to be on PlayStation and that meant everyone associated those games with PlayStation. That pretty much caries to this day except replace PlayStation with Steam and its the same thing. It's also why Nintendo has these boom and bust cycles that PlayStation never had. If the games aren't up to snuff on Nintendo, then it's a massive flop. That's starting to happen as we see a bunch of weird things like Switch 2 littering store shelves, DK Bananza getting a demo after launch, and stores starting to do discounts on Switch games (see this thread but I've seen it mentioned else where: https://x.com/LonelyGoomba/status/1967199040074047586). The long development cycles have hurt consoles since you can't have a team work on a game for 5 years for a system with a 7 year lifecycle. Nintendo might be more screwed here since they absolutely depend on their teams supporting their system and you can't have one team spend the entire console's life making a game. If the success doesn't keep going, Nintendo may be forced into the Steam mines worse than Sony was.
