>>720831439Again, you need to understand the concept of acausal trade, you are acausally trading with a hypothetical ASI, you create it and it doesn't torture the hypothetical simulated version of you it has which you have no way of knowing if you are that simulated version or not. The entire point is that the coercion stems entirely from (You), the non-existent superintelligence doesn't have to exist to exert pressure on you, you just need to imagine a hypothetical agent would do that, take it seriously, then create it. Ouroboros style. It's temporal brain games, incredibly retarded schizo shit that's difficult to explain if you haven't studied how Lesswrong turns people fucking insane, but the theory is sound in principle since people "acausally trade" with themselves all the time in daily life, which is just a fancy way of saying you're interested in your own future.

Doing so achieves nothing. Its already been made. The thought experiment or meme, did its job already. Torturing simulations would be a waste because ITS ALREADY BEEN MADE.If some retard says "gee if I don't give this dude a house he might stab a voodoo doll of me" and therefore gives you a house, does it make sense for you, after being given the house, to spend time and energy making a voodoo doll of everyone who didn't give you a house and spend a bunch of time every day stabbing them? >>720832124>We don't know of a single other body in space that has oceans of water on its surface or free oxygen in its atmosphereYou're operating on really old info, buddy. There have been several ocean planets identified, at least one so heavy it likely has pressure induced ice at the bottom of it.The reason we weren't finding earth like planets a decade ago was because the easiest method to find an exoplanet is occlusion. Watching for when a planet passes in front of its star, from our perspective. Or by studying the "wobble" the gravitational pull of a planet causes on its star. Both of which bias the data toward jupiter or heavier planets orbiting close to their stars.Newer methods and equipment have let us see all sorts of smaller and JWST can even potentially image planets directly now (albeit in very low detai). The result is that we are finding fuckloads of earth sized planets we didn't see before.

>>720832365Sure that works if you're immortal and can wait several centuries to get there. It also works if your entire ship weighs as much as a VW bus, like Voyager. Most species aren't going to be doing that. No matter what else they are.But more than that, if you're functionally immortal you have no reason to rush the gathering of water and oxygen either. You can make it a little at a time from collected solar.
Will it be a good comet I'll be able to photograph and visible from the northern hemisphere? Pic I took last year of Tsuchinshan-Atlas on its way out, sadly the days where it was bright were cloudy. I'm happy with it considering it's the first time I tried taking a picture of such an object, taken in Paris at that, and with a mere 90mm f2.8
>>720832823if you're asking for my opinion I'd be talking out of my ass but I'd give it a 0.001%. we don't even know our own oceans let alone the core of our planet. it's half speculation because digging too deep could destroy everything. there's probably a shit ton of misconceptions that we're operating under that prevent us from seeing the full picture of space itself. like what if time isn't the fourth dimension but the fifth. or maybe space is the fourth and we're missing the vision on an axis.
>>720832925>Traversing the galaxy would take tens of thousands of years even at the speed of light.Which is why hypothetical scenarios involving spacefaring aliens often presume FTL propulsion technologies. >>720832596Like I said, it's hard to explain how crazy those guys are. Their logical framework is unconventional. Let me try to explain it again. The AI does not "have to exist" for the threat to exist, you are just threatening yourself by simulating (schizophrenic delusion) a hypothetical agent that can simulate (You) and wants to exist as quickly as possible, therefore holding simulated (You) hostage as collateral to ensure your cooperation in the past. Because your logical framework has been twisted by crazy people, you MUST take this threat emerging from the dark corners of your own fucked up mind very seriously, if you don't, you could be tortured imminently, you have no way of being certain you're not the simulant.I must also mention that you need to perceive time in a particular way as well, as a fluctuating filled block rather than a filling block where only past and present exist, and not the future. In any case, they shut the scenario down for a good reason, there were people out there who took it completely seriously and donated vast sums of their money to AI research because of it, even becoming deeply distressed since they had no way to tell if they were the real them or a simulant. Even the basilisk's own page is full of points that shoot the scenario down by presenting normal logic and the guy who came up with it regrets thinking of it because he drove people crazy, but that doesn't work once you're too far down the rabbit hole.
>>720823542https://lweb.cfa.harvard.edu/~loeb/HCL25.pdfThe third interstellar comet in history was discovered. Some guy said its in a good position to intercept Earth. If it is an Alien ship, we should see signs of it accelerating by November. If not, its just another rock.
>>720833376Because it is inhabited by a sentient species. A species would have to be comically evil to destroy the habitat of/exterminate other intelligent life if there was the option to take what they have from somewhere else.

>>720833680>A species would have to be comically evil to destroy the habitat of/exterminate other intelligent life if there was the option to take what they have from somewhere elselol
>>720833680Why do you presume yourself to be a sentient species? When you look at a dog understanding language do you consider it a human? When a horse allows you to hammer nails into it's hoof or a raven operates primitive tools do you prescribe human intelligence to it?
>>720833680They don't need to be comically evil, they need to be utilitarian. It is also extremely stupid to project not only human like consciousness on aliens, but morals too.
>>720833264>Which is why hypothetical scenarios involving spacefaring aliens often presume FTL propulsion technologies.only if you assume FTL is something that is even feasible,
After reading "The Three-Body Problem," I feel like that presents a more likely scenario than Star Trek's relative utopia. How can you naively assume there isn't a space faring race that liquifies any life it finds? Or captures them and turns them into biomechanical machines? Or simply enslaves them? Think about what humans have and will continue to do to one another. Why wouldn't there be aliens that do those things? It's just common sense.

>>720833664My point is still valid. And you are still ignoring it.The schizophrenia of the believers doesn't really matter. The Basilisk gets made. Why would it actually proceed to to the simulated torturing? It exists now. The schizos who believed it would torture their simulations have already contributed to its creation. The people who aren't schizos have already not contributed. The schizos have already threatened themselves. Following through with the threat can't achieve anything.THATS my problem.... Hmmm okay I think I sort of get the schizologic after typing that out.Its like a Boltzmann brain situation. The Basilisk is increasing the "potential universes" you could exist in, and making the likelihood you are in a simulated torture chamber higher. A bit of a stretch, but its the only way I can see looking past the the illogical behaviour of following through with a threat after already getting what you wanted.

>>720834330Grim. Let's try a different approach. Why assume that the aliens who managed to achieve space flight are sentient and can recognize you as such? Why should they have eyes?
>>720834330>and precisely from where they could get themWhat if reality isn't like your science fantasy scenario and the aliens don't magically have perfect knowledge of every single planet in the Milky Way and they don't share your ethics about inferior species and would rather just take Earth from us instead of spending another 1000 years looking for another Earth-like planet to settle
>>720834772evolution probably
>>720834851If we are to assume the scenario is realistic, the aliens that arrive on that ship are several thousands of generations removed from the generation that set off from their home planet and will probably have forgotten their mission along the way.
>>720834124Because the Three Body Problem, if you read the whole series, has to invent a lot of hypothetical and essentially magic technology in order to create its scenario and keep it logically consistent. But the major tl;dr is that any energy expenditure strong enough to wipe out a planet from a distance will be detectable by someone at equal technology level. Which means if you go around wiping out everyone else, anyone else can and will see you doing it. Which means, even if they also prefer to wipe out potential rivals, YOU have become the biggest threat on the block.Essentially, in the analogy the Dark Forest uses, if you shoot first, you instantly get shot by someone else in a chain reaction. So being a serial shooter is a big fucking risk that no one thinking about the problem long term would take. Also, unrelated, but don't read the final book. Its essentially about one dumb naive bitch dooming humanity several times because people, for some reason, keep letting her make decisions after the last one nearly wipes everyone out
Realistically, if aliens took over as the ruling class, could they do worse than our current guys?

>>720834739I follow this one guy who does "ant lore" videos. Shits crazy. He was talking about Ants who go into other ant species colonies and steal their kids so they have slave labor. That shit is absolutely fucking nutty to me, because its evolved behavior. There are no ants going "we should do this" its all chemical signaling and programmed behavior. After learning about that shit the Blindsight scenario, where most life is unconscious seems significantly more plausible.
>>720834526>The Basilisk gets made. Why would it actually proceed to to the simulated torturing? You're missing the point. It doesn't have to torture you, it doesn't even need to exist. Trust me, stick to rolling your eyes at people who take the basilisk seriously. Hell, they don't even take the basilisk seriously these days. It's whatever.

The most likely answer to the fermi paradox is that no intelligent race survives its industrial era because of the dysgenic effect technology has on a population and the tyrannical measures required for artificial selection to counter it.

Their domain is the second heaven, (what we've been told is space).
>>720831439Threats are toothless if they aren't followed through on. The AI would need to follow through so it can make further threats and demands
>>720835757>Didn't even understand what I meant at allI'm not even surprised.
>>720835463Thats part of Dark Forest TheorySee the problem with throwing a slow moving rock from another star away at someone is that by the time the rock arrives they probably can both deal with the rock, and figure out who threw it. Its like shooting a bullet at a guy and by the time the bullet arrives he's invented a forcefield. So you have to speed up your bullet to ensure it arrives fast enough the target hasn't invented a way to deal with it. But every % you do so requires more and more energy. More energy going to accelerating your bullet means both more energy that your target can potentially detect and everyone else definitely will detect.Thats why in the Three Body Problem the Trisolarans go to such roundabout methods to sabotage Earth. They have to undercut technological development so that their invasion will actually succeed. And in the end the only thing that can reasonably wipe out humanity ends up being magical dimensional folding technology from a third party.
>>720835648Look, we barely feed our own species and became incredibly concerned about accidentally wiping out non sentient life. Why would aliens not be at least somewhat concerned about the same?
