I'm 37. I played HL1 at launch with my dad, then Blue Shift, then HL2 and the two episodes. Loved it.

But the things they pioneered are long since standard. The idea of a lore-rich FPS with environmental puzzles and loose exploration isn't novel, it's the standard.

Even if you just really, really liked the people who worked on it, they're gone now. Viktor Antonov is dead. Laidlaw is gone, writing bad books and screenplays for Netflix. Kelly Bailey left Valve, returned, then left a second time nearly a decade ago. The Backman bros left in 2014.

I'm not just going to keep going through MobyGames and confirming the rest. This is a Ship of Theseus arriving at a port with supplies it no longer needs, and learning that airplanes and trains exist now. It's time to let go.

2 things. 1, yeah sure the things HL pioneered are now "standard", but HL still remains in many respects the exemplar of that standard. I like that lossless scaling smooths out the compression artifacts on the DVD when upscaling the image. In my opinion it does actually make the image easier to look at on a big screen.

There were a few reasons Half Life 2: Episode 3 never came out. At first it was because they couldn't decide on a slam dunk new feature or technology to put on display. That's why their resources went into Portal 2 instead. They knew what they wanted to do with it.

After that, Microsoft slapped Valve with backhanded threats of Windows 8 becoming a walled garden that Steam would have to play by the rules of, (and give a cut of their revenue to Microsoft for nothing.) Of course, they didn't want that to happen, so they moved into "Make Linux gaming viable mode" This is where the original Steam Machines and controller came from. Windows 8 sucked, and the walled garden concept never got traction, but the relationship, such as it was, between Valve and Microsoft was permanently tarnished.
The top brass at the company didn't really give a shit about actually releasing games. It wasn't essential. Steam was making a ton of money and they could afford to let the core developers experiment. There was no motivation to say "Okay guys, we need to actually put out a product in the next few years. It's time to pick one to run with."

Meanwhile, the game development teams were coming up with pitches and putting together tech demos. But no one could ever convince the rest of the company that it was worth putting theirs into full production, so all that got made were the small scope tech demos like The Lab and Hand Lab. Alyx only got made because they knew the Index would fall flat without a first party killer app. So they actually created a formal process for deciding when a project goes into full development, and the Index's release was adjusted to coincide with when Alyx was finished.

Now that that process exists, and interest in the Half Life franchise is renewed, and Source 2 is in decent enough shape, they've been working on HLX, Half Life 3, for the last 6 to 8 years, depending on how much work was done concurrently with Alyx.

I have absolutely no clue where they could go with Team Fortress from here. All the Australium is gone. Saxton Hale is dead, the mercs are all retired and happy, TF Industries is disbanded, and the dipshits Saxton left in charge of Mann Co. don't seem like they'd be serious rivals.

Another complete reboot with another art style overhaul and totally new characters is the best they could do. And there's no way that's going to capture the same magic as TF2 did. And worse, just like CS:GO, the economy of TF2 is so developed that no one's going to want to leave their unusuals and weapon skins behind. But so many items in TF2 are collabs or made by community contributors who've disappeared over the last 20 years that it would be impossible to port everything over or give everyone suitable value for the items they're attached to.

I feel like you'd lose a lot of the unique charm of Team Fortress if your characters were Abe Lincoln, Stonewall Jackson, Billy the Kid, Alfred Nobel, Davy Crockett, Sigmund Freud, Nikola Tesla, and John Henry.
TF2 got to where it is by having charming, distilled caricatures that were eventually beaten into fully fledged characters over time. Many of the characters still don't have full official names.

We only know the Heavy's first name. We only ever knew the Scout's first name until the last issue of the comic, and he might not have had a last name at all until he got married the first time. We don't know the Soldier's name at all, or the Medic's, or anything about the Pyro at all, by design.

You'd lose a lot by using character designs people already have strong expectations for. TF2 wouldn't have been the same if they didn't just keep improvising more and more wacky shit on top of blank slates.
